Study Of Mechanical Alloying Of Sm And Fe

    Get PDF
Mechanical alloying of Sm and Fe with the composition of SmFe3 was studied using x-ray-diffraction (XRD), Mossbauer, and magnetization measurements. Data taken as a function of milling time for up to 20 h show significant changes occurring during ball milling. The XRD studies show that the initial crystalline Bragg reflections changed to a broad maximum, which is attributed to the formation of an amorphous phase. The initial six-line pattern in the Mossbauer spectrum, characteristic of magnetic ordering, changed to a broad singlet, characteristic of a nonmagnetic material. Magnetization measurements revealed that the coercive field was at its maximum after 5 h of milling and decreased sharply as the milling time increased. The remanent magnetization was at its maximum between 5 and 10 h of milling. The final product of the ball milling, which exhibited the characteristics of an amorphous paramagnetic material in its XRD and Mossbauer spectrum, was studied after heat treatment. The XRD and the Mossbauer spectra of the heat treated alloy show that substantial changes occurred during heat treatment in that sharp Bragg reflections, characteristic of crystalline materials, reappear and the alloy changed from a paramagnetic to a ferromagnetic state. Objectives: To report on the methods, peri‐operative outcomes and histopathological concordance between frozen and final section from the NeuroSAFE PROOF Feasibility study (NCT03317990). Patients and Methods: Between May 2018 and March 2019 49 men at 2 UK centres underwent robot‐assisted robotic prostatectomy (RARP). 25 men were randomised to NeuroSAFE RARP (intervention arm) vs. 24 men to standard RARP (control arm). Frozen section was compared to final paraffin section margin assessment in the 25 men in the NeuroSAFE arm. Operation timings and complications were collected prospectively in both arms. Results: 50 NVB from 25 patients in the NeuroSAFE arm were analysed. When analysed by each pathological section (n=250, average 5 per side) we note sensitivity 100%, specificity 99.2%, AUC was 0.994 (95% CI 0.985 to 1, P= <.001). On an NVB basis (n=50) we note sensitivity of 100%, specificity 92.7%, and AUC of 0.963 (95% CI 0.914 to 1, p = <0.001. NeuroSAFE RARP lasted a mean 3 hours 16 minutes (knife to skin to off table, 95% CI 3 hrs 2 mins ‐ 3 hrs 30 mins) compared to 2 hours 14 minutes (2 hrs 2 mins ‐ 2 hours 25 mins, P=<0.001) for standard RARP. There was no morbidity associated with the additional length of operation in the NeuroSAFE arm. Conclusion: This feasibility study demonstrates the safety, the reproducibility and the excellent histopathological concordance of the NeuroSAFE technique in the NeuroSAFE PROOF trial. Though the technique increases the duration of RARP, this does not cause short‐term harm. Confirmation of feasibility has led to the opening of the fully powered NeuroSAFE PROOF RCT, which is currently underway at 4 sites in the UK

Concomitant CIS on TURBT does not impact oncological outcomes in patients treated with neoadjuvant or induction chemotherapy followed by radical cystectomy

© Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2018Background: Cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for muscle invasive bladder cancer improves all-cause and cancer specific survival. We aimed to evaluate whether the detection of carcinoma in situ (CIS) at the time of initial transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) has an oncological impact on the response to NAC prior to radical cystectomy. Patients and methods: Patients were identified retrospectively from 19 centers who received at least three cycles of NAC or induction chemotherapy for cT2-T4aN0-3M0 urothelial carcinoma of the bladder followed by radical cystectomy between 2000 and 2013. The primary and secondary outcomes were pathological response and overall survival, respectively. Multivariable analysis was performed to determine the independent predictive value of CIS on these outcomes. Results: Of 1213 patients included in the analysis, 21.8% had concomitant CIS. Baseline clinical and pathologic characteristics of the ‘CIS’ versus ‘no-CIS’ groups were similar. The pathological response did not differ between the two arms when response was defined as pT0N0 (17.9% with CIS vs 21.9% without CIS; p = 0.16) which may indicate that patients with CIS may be less sensitive to NAC or ≤ pT1N0 (42.8% with CIS vs 37.8% without CIS; p = 0.15). On Cox regression model for overall survival for the cN0 cohort, the presence of CIS was not associated with survival (HR 0.86 (95% CI 0.63–1.18; p = 0.35). The presence of LVI (HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.01–1.96; p = 0.04), hydronephrosis (HR 1.63, 95% CI 1.23–2.16; p = 0.001) and use of chemotherapy other than ddMVAC (HR 0.57, 95% CI 0.34–0.94; p = 0.03) were associated with shorter overall survival. For the whole cohort, the presence of CIS was also not associated with survival (HR 1.05 (95% CI 0.82–1.35; p = 0.70). Conclusion: In this multicenter, real-world cohort, CIS status at TURBT did not affect pathologic response to neoadjuvant or induction chemotherapy. This study is limited by its retrospective nature as well as variability in chemotherapy regimens and surveillance regimens.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Genotypic and phenotypic characterisation of three local chicken ecotypes of Ghana based on principal component analysis and body measurements

    Get PDF
This study was to characterise three Ghanaian local chicken ecotypes, namely, Interior Savannah, Forest and Coastal Savannah ecotypes, based on morphological data and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes. Morphological data including shank length, body girth, back length, thigh length, beak length, comb length and wattle length were collected. Blood samples were also obtained for SNP genotyping with Affymetrix chicken 600k SNP chip. Principal component analysis showed that Forest and Coastal Savannah birds were closely related. Generally, all three ecotypes seemed very diverse especially birds from the Interior Savannah zone. Morphological characterisation showed ecotype, sex and pen had significant effect on body weights (p0.05). Very few of the phenotypes reported to be associated with heat resistance – frizzle (2%) and naked neck (1.6%) – were found in the current study. It is concluded that the three local ecotypes are genetically diverse but with similar morphological features

Performance of three local chicken ecotypes of Ghana naturally exposed to velogenic Newcastle disease virus

    Get PDF
This study was to evaluate the performance of three Ghanaian local ecotypes that were exposed to a natural velogenic Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) challenge. The birds at four weeks of age had been challenged with a lentogenic (vaccine) form of the virus and later exposed to velogenic NDV when their anti-NDV antibody titres had fallen below 1000. All the birds lost weight over the 21 days of exposure to the virus, with the Coastal Savannah ecotype showing the fastest weight loss albeit not significant (p\u3e0.05). Lesion scores for all ecotypes were low and similar across ecotypes suggesting that the challenge was not severe. Heritability was zero for the lesion scores and low (0.01) for post-challenge growth rate across ecotypes. Hence, not much progress can be made in selection to improve post infection growth rate
