    Identity formation, cross-cultural attitudes and language maintenance in the Hungarian Diaspora of Queensland

    [Abstract]: The purpose of this paper is to discuss some cultural factors influencing the language maintenance and shift patterns of the Hungarian community of Brisbane. This paper examines language shift in the context of language use in the family domain and discusses the connections between the development of cross-cultural attitudes (attitudes to the host society as well as the home culture), identity development and language maintenance and shift. The empirical evidence based on a sociolinguistic survey suggests that Hungarians attach great value to their language. Keeping a strong Hungarian identity is a strong factor in intergenerational language maintenance, and the development of dual identities does not necessarily lead to language shift. Dual identity can be an additive rather than a subtractive force in the development of Hungarian-English bilinguality

    The paper is a summary about the Hungarian retail sector based on the results of different research projects completed in the last five years. From all of these studies and of course the wide ranging domestic and international literature we had to conclude that the retailers have become more and more the exclusive owner of the information about the consumers and with this they become the new "captains" of the food chain. Thus we always started our research with gathering information about the situation of the Hungarian retail sector because we believed if we want to help those who try to adapt (the suppliers) then we have to know much more about those who dictate (the retailers). Analysing the concentration in company and not branch level we can say that the cumulated concentration line of the CR-10 companies are very similar to that of the processing and the retail sector. But there is a very important difference in the absolute numbers.     This paper is concerned with repetitive adverbials in Hungarian. It presents an overview of the different Hungarian equivalents of again, addressing their properties and their relevance. One of the goals of this paper is descriptive; it offers a systematic description of Hungarian repetitives. In addition, it provides evidence for two major claims. First, meaning differences (including the restitutive — repetitive ambiguity) are due to structural rather than lexical differences. Second, repetitives do not form a homogeneous set. The possible scope positions and in some cases, the denotation, of repetitive adverbials differs. This difference, in general, cannot be predicted from the morphological makeup of the repetitives, so an independent specification of the unexpected properties is necessary

    Oral Health Practices, Beliefs and Dental Service Utilization of Albanian Immigrants in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: A Pilot Study

    There is limited information on the oral health of Albanian immigrant population residing in the U.S. This creates a hinderance to developing and implementing appropriate dental care programs for the population. This study investigated oral health practices, beliefs, dental visits and associated factors of Albanian adults living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Purposive and snowball sampling methods were employed. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data on oral health practices, beliefs, dental visits and socio-demographic information. Descriptive and multivariable logistics regression were conducted. Overall, 266 adults were recruited, 54% male, 56% have lived 10 or more years in the U.S., 95% rated their oral health as excellent/good and 87% reported having a dental visit in the last year. Age, ability to speak English, having a usual source of dental care, and reporting excellent/good oral health were associated with having a dental visit in the last year. A substantial number of Albanians adult reported a dental visit in the last year and those that did not write or read in English had lower odds of reporting a dental visit

    Repetitive Adverbs in English and Hungarian

    The basic question this paper addresses is the semantic characterization of repetitive again, other repetitives in English, and some of their crosslinguistic equivalents in Hungarian. The properties considered here include the denotation, possible scope and the possible positions where such adver- bials can appear. The major goal is to expand the range of adverbials considered. Standardly, it is only again, or a default repetitive in some other language that is considered, possibly along with a prefixal variant (e.g. re- in English, as in Keyser and Roeper 1992). This paper expands the typological coverage of repetitives (see, among others, Beck 2005 and Lechner et al. 2015). It is argued that repetitive adverbs show variation in meaning, and also considerable variation in scope and possible positions, which can differ from the variation previously described in the literature. It is suggested that such variation does not necessarily follow from independent factors, but it must be stipulated for each repetitive in question
