    Point-contact spectroscopy of Al- and C-doped MgB2. Superconducting energy gaps and scattering studies

    The two-band/two-gap superconductivity in aluminium and carbon doped MgB2_2 has been addressed by the point-contact spectroscopy. Two gaps are preserved in all samples with TcsT_c's down to 22 K. The evolution of two gaps as a function of the critical temperature in the doped systems suggest the dominance of the band-filling effects but for the increased Al-doping the enhanced interband scattering approaching two gaps must be considered. The magnetic field dependences of the Andreev reflection excess currents as well as zero-energy density of states determined from the experimental data are used to analyze the intraband scattering. It is shown, that while the C-doping increases the intraband scattering in the π\pi-band more rapidly then in the σ\sigma band, the Al-doping does not change their relative weight.Comment: 8 pages, incl. 6 figure

    Hypomania Checklist-32 - cross-validation of shorter versions screening for bipolar disorders in an epidemiological study.

    Self-reports such as Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) can be used to enhance recognition of bipolar disorders, but they are often too long and only validated in clinical samples. The objectives of this study are therefore to test whether (i) the HCL-32 can be used for screening in the community and (ii) whether two previously suggested shorter versions would do as well. Data stemmed from the CoLaus|PsyColaus, a prospective cohort study which included randomly selected residents aged 35-66 years from an urban area. Participants underwent semistructured interviews to assess DSM-IV disorders and 1712 of them completed the HCL-32. Forty individuals (2.3%) were diagnosed as having BD. Compared to others, participants with BD scored significantly higher on the HCL-32. The HCL-32 had a sensitivity of 0.78 and specificity of 0.68. Very similar figures were found for two previously proposed shorter versions with 16 and 20 items. The results of confirmatory factor analysis and item response theory (IRT) models supported the postulated two-factor structure for the three HCL versions. Despite the low base rate of BD in this sample, the screening properties of the HCL-32 remained almost as good.     Charge Order Superstructure with Integer Iron Valence in Fe2OBO3

    Solution-grown single crystals of Fe2OBO3 were characterized by specific heat, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. A peak in the specific heat at 340 K indicates the onset of charge order. Evidence for a doubling of the unit cell at low temperature is presented. Combining structural refinement of diffraction data and Mossbauer spectra, domains with diagonal charge order are established. Bond-valence-sum analysis indicates integer valence states of the Fe ions in the charge ordered phase, suggesting Fe2OBO3 is the clearest example of ionic charge order so far.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures.     Prospective randomized trial comparing sutured with sutureless mesh fixation for Lichtenstein hernia repair: long-term results

    Background: Following Lichtenstein hernia repair, up to 25% of patients experience prolonged postoperative and chronic pain as well as discomfort in the groin. One of the underlying causes of these complaints are the compression or irritation of nerves by the sutures used to fixate the mesh. We compared the level and rate of chronic pain in patients operated with the classical Lichtenstein technique fixated by sutures to patients with sutureless mesh fixation technique. Methods: A two-armed randomized trial with 264 male patients was performed. After consent, patients were randomized preoperatively. For the fixation of the mesh we used either sutures with slow-absorbing material (PDS 2.0) (group I, n=133) or tissue glue (Histoacryl) (group II, n=131). Follow-up examinations were performed after 3, 12months and after 5years. Results: Patient characteristics in the two groups were similar. No cross-over between groups was observed. After 5years, long-term follow-up could be completed for 59% of subjects. After 5years, 10/85 (11.7%) patients in group I and 3/70 (4.2%) in group II suffered from chronic pain in the groin region (P=0.108). The operation time was significantly shorter in group II (79min vs 73min, P=0.01). One early recurrence occurred in group II (3months). The recurrence rate was 0 and 0% after 12months and 5.9% (5/85) and 10% (7/70) after 5years in group I and group II, respectively (P=0.379). Conclusion: After 5years, the two techniques of mesh fixation resulted in similar rates of chronic pain. Whereas recurrence rates were comparable, fixation of the mesh with tissue glue decreased operating room time significantly. Hence, suture less mesh fixation with Histoacryl is a sensible alternative to suture fixation and should be especially considered for patients prone to pai

    Anisotropic superconducting properties of single-crystalline FeSe0.5Te0.5

    Iron-chalcogenide single crystals with the nominal composition FeSe0.5_{0.5}Te0.5_{0.5} and a transition temperature of Tc14.6T_{c}\simeq14.6 K were synthesized by the Bridgman method. The structural and anisotropic superconducting properties of those crystals were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and torque magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. Room temperature neutron powder diffraction reveals that 95% of the crystal volume is of the same tetragonal structure as PbO. The structure refinement yields a stoichiometry of Fe_1.045Se_0.406Te_0.594. Additionally, a minor hexagonal Fe_7Se_8 impurity phase was identified. The magnetic penetration depth \lambda at zero temperature was found to be 491(8) nm in the ab-plane and 1320(14) nm along the c-axis. The zero-temperature value of the superfluid density \rho_s(0) \lambda^-2(0) obeys the empirical Uemura relation observed for various unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-pnictides. The temperature dependences of both \lambda_ab and \lambda_c are well described by a two-gap s+s-wave model with the zero-temperature gap values of \Delta_S(0)=0.51(3) meV and \Delta_L(0)=2.61(9) meV for the small and the large gap, respectively. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy parameter \gamma_\lambda(T)=\lambda_c(T)/\lambda_{ab}(T) increases with decreasing temperature, in agreement with \gamma_\lambda(T) observed in the iron-pnictide superconductors

    Diagnostic criteria for bipolarity based on an international sample of 5,635 patients with DSM-IV major depressive episodes

    To assess the clinical validity of individual DSM-IV criteria for hypomania. In an international sample of 5,635 patients with major depressive episodes (Bridge Study), DSM-IV criteria for hypomania (stem questions, number and quality of symptoms, duration and exclusion criteria) were systematically assessed and their validity analysed on the basis of clinical data including family history, course, and other clinical characteristics. Three stem questions for hypomania, irritability, elevated mood and the added question of increased activity, showed comparable validity. The results support the current DSM-IV requirement for a higher symptom threshold (4 of 7 hypomanic symptoms) in cases of irritable mood. Longer durations of hypomanic episodes were associated with higher scores on all validators. The results did not support the DSM-IV durational requirements for hypomanic episodes (4days) and manic episodes (7days). Brief hypomanic episodes of 1, 2 or 3days were valid and would meet validity criteria for inclusion. The three exclusion criteria in DSM-IV (hypomania due to the use of antidepressants or of other substances, or to other medical conditions) were found to exclude patients with bipolar depression and should therefore not be retained. These results support several revisions of the DSM-IV concept of hypomanic episodes: specifically, the inclusion of increased activity as a gate question, the inclusion of 1 or 2 to 3-day episodes and the elimination of all exclusion criteri
