On the time delay in binary systems
The aim of this paper is to study the time delay on electromagnetic signals
propagating across a binary stellar system. We focus on the antisymmetric
gravitomagnetic contribution due to the angular momentum of one of the stars of
the pair. Considering a pulsar as the source of the signals, the effect would
be manifest both in the arrival times of the pulses and in the frequency shift
of their Fourier spectra. We derive the appropriate formulas and we discuss the
influence of different configurations on the observability of gravitomagnetic
effects. We argue that the recently discovered PSR J0737-3039 binary system
does not permit the detection of the effects because of the large size of the
eclipsed region.Comment: 7 pages, 2 eps figures, RevTex, to appear in Physical Review
Non-clasical Nucleation in Supercooled Nickel
The dynamics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of crystalline nickel from
the super-cooled melt is examined during rapid quenching using molecular
dynamics and a modified embedded atom method potential. The character of the
critical nuclei of the crystallization transition is examined using common
neighbor analysis and visualization. At nucleation the saddle point droplet
consists of randomly stacked planar structures with an in plane triangular
order. These results are consistent with previous theoretical results that
predict that the nucleation process in some metals is non-classical due to the
presence of long-range forces and a spinodal.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Angular momentum effects in Michelson-Morley type experiments
The effect of the angular momentum density of a gravitational source on the
times of flight of light rays in an interferometer is analyzed. The calculation
is made imagining that the interferometer is at the equator of the gravity
source and, as long as possible, the metric, provided it is stationary and
axisymmetric, is not approximated. Finally, in order to evaluate the size of
the effect in the case of the Earth a weak field approximation is introduced.
For laboratory scales and non-geodesic paths the correction turns out to be
comparable with the sensitivity expected in gravitational waves interferometric
detectors, whereas it drops under the threshold of detectability when using
free (geodesic) light rays.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX; more about the detection technique, references

Are inner disc misalignments common? ALMA reveals an isotropic outer disc inclination distribution for young dipper stars
Dippers are a common class of young variable star exhibiting day-long dimmings with depths of up to several tens of per cent. A standard explanation is that dippers host nearly edge-on (id ≈ 70°) protoplanetary discs that allow close-in (10 au) disc resolved by ALMA and that inner disc misalignments may be common during the protoplanetary phase. More than one mechanism may contribute to the dipper phenomenon, including accretion-driven warps and ‘broken’ discs caused by inclined (sub-)stellar or planetary companions
A post-Keplerian parameter to test gravito-magnetic effects in binary pulsar systems
We study the pulsar timing, focusing on the time delay induced by the
gravitational field of the binary systems. In particular, we study the
gravito-magnetic correction to the Shapiro time delay in terms of Keplerian and
post-Keplerian parameters, and we introduce a new post-Keplerian parameter
which is related to the intrinsic angular momentum of the stars. Furthermore,
we evaluate the magnitude of these effects for the binary pulsar systems known
so far. The expected magnitude is indeed small, but the effect is important per
se.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 1 eps figure, accepted for publication in Physical

The production rate of the coarse grained Gibbs entropy and the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy: a real connection ?
We discuss the connection between the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, , and
the production rate of the coarse grained Gibbs entropy, . Detailed
numerical computations show that the (often accepted) identification of the two
quantities does not hold in systems with intermittent behavior and/or very
different characteristic times and in systems presenting pseudo-chaos. The
basic reason of this fact is in the asymptotic (with respect to time) nature of
, while is a quantity related to short time features of a system.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures Submitted to PR
Vascular endothelial growth factor and tryptase changes after chemoembolization in hepatocarcinoma patients
AIM: To evaluate vascular endothelial growth factor
(VEGF) and tryptase in hepatocellular cancer (HCC)
before and after trans-arterial chemoembolization
(TACE).
METHODS: VEGF and tryptase serum concentrations
were assessed from 71 unresectable HCC patients
before and after hepatic TACE performed by binding
DC-Beads® to doxorubicin. VEGF levels were examined
for each serum sample using the Quantikine Human
VEGF-enzyme-linked immuno-absorbent assay (ELISA),
whereas tryptase serum concentrations were assessed
for each serum sample by means of fluoro-enzyme
immunoassay (FEIA) using the Uni-CAP100 tool.
Differences between serum VEGF and tryptase values
before and after TACE were evaluated using Student t
test. Person's correlation was used to assess the degree
of association between the two variables.
RESULTS: VEGF levels and serum tryptase in HCC patients before TACE had a mean value and standard
deviation (SD) of 114.31 ± 79.58 pg/mL and 8.13
± 3.61 μg/L, respectively. The mean levels and SD
of VEGF levels and serum tryptase in HCC patients
after TACE were 238.14 ± 109.41 pg/mL and 4.02 ±
3.03 μg/L. The changes between the mean values of
concentration of VEGF and tryptase before treatment
and after treatment was statistically significant (P <
0.000231 and P < 0.00124, by Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney
respectively). A significant correlation between VEGF
levels before and after TACE and between tryptase
levels before and after TACE was demonstrated (r =
0.68, P = 0.003; r = 0.84, P = 0.000 respectively).
CONCLUSION: Our pilot results suggest that the
higher serum VEGF levels and the lower tryptase levels
following TACE may be potential biomarkers changing
in response to therapy
