Observation of hypersonic phononic crystal effects in porous silicon superlattices
Brillouin light scattering experiments were carried out on porous silicon superlattices with modulation wavelengths in the range 37–167 nm. Phonon frequencies deduced from the Brillouin spectra show good agreement with those obtained from an elastic continuum model for a system with one-dimensional periodicity. Evidence for the existence of a hypersonic phononic bandgap and zone-folded longitudinal acoustic phonons is reported
Low lift-to-drag aero-assisted orbit transfer vehicles
The results of systems analysis conducted on low life drag ratio (L/D) aero-assisted orbit transfer vehicle (AOTV's) are presented. The objectives for this class of vehicle and formulate technology development plans and funding levels to bring the required technologies to readiness levels, as well as develop a credible decision data base encompassing the entire range of low L/D concepts for use in future NASA Aeroassist Orbit Transfer Vehicles studies. Each candidate low L/D concept, the aerobrake, the lifting brake, and the aeromaneuvering concept could be made to work with technologies achievable by the early 1990's. All concepts require flexible structure with flexible thermal protection system (TPS) to be successfully integrated into the shuttle orbiter for launch, all required improvements in guidance and control to fly the dispersed atmospheres at high altitude, and all concepts had potential to evolve from ground-based to space-based operations
Distributed feedback lasers
A ridge waveguide distributed feedback laser was developed in InGaAsP. These devices have demonstrated CW output powers over 7 mW with threshold currents as low as 60 mA at 25 C. Measurements of the frequency response of these devices show a 3 dB bandwidth of about 2 GHz, which may be limited by the mount. The best devices have a single mode spectra over the entire temperature range tested with a side mode suppression of about 20 dB in both CW and pulsed modes. The design of this device, including detailed modeling of the ridge guide structure, effective index calculations, and a discussion of the grating configuration are presented. Also, the fabrication of the devices is presented in some detail, especially the fabrication of and subsequent growth over the grating. In addition, a high frequency fiber pigtailed package was designed and tested, which is a suitable prototype for a commercial package
Non-destructive spatial heterodyne imaging of cold atoms
We demonstrate a new method for non-destructive imaging of laser-cooled
atoms. This spatial heterodyne technique forms a phase image by interfering a
strong carrier laser beam with a weak probe beam that passes through the cold
atom cloud. The figure of merit equals or exceeds that of phase-contrast
imaging, and the technique can be used over a wider range of spatial scales. We
show images of a dark spot MOT taken with imaging fluences as low as 61 pJ/cm^2
at a detuning of 11 linewidths, resulting in 0.0004 photons scattered per atom.Comment: text+3 figures, submitted to Optics Letter
Sound Propagation in Elongated Bose-Einstein Condensed Clouds
We consider propagation of sound pulses along the long axis of a
Bose-Einstein condensed cloud in a very anisotropic trap. In the linear regime,
we demonstrate that the square of the velocity of propagation is given by the
square of the local sound velocity, , averaged over the cross
section of the cloud. We also carry out calculations in the nonlinear regime,
and determine how the speed of the pulse depends on its amplitude.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 3 eps figure
Polynomial solutions of nonlinear integral equations
We analyze the polynomial solutions of a nonlinear integral equation,
generalizing the work of C. Bender and E. Ben-Naim. We show that, in some
cases, an orthogonal solution exists and we give its general form in terms of
kernel polynomials.Comment: 10 page
Comment on 'Non-equilibrium thermodynamics of light absorption'
A recent paper by Meszéna and Westerhoff (1999 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 32 301) has aimed to address what is referred to as a principal question of biological thermodynamics, the possibility of describing photosynthesis in terms of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The issue is associated with a misrepresentation of the fundamental photophysics involved, and as a result the analysis is invalid
University of Colorado: 1971 Summer Field Season in East Baffin Island
Research was continued by University of Colorado faculty and graduate students in the area of Cumberland Peninsula. Baffin Island, Northwest Territories. The work was divided into four main phases: 1) studies on the glacial chronology of the Penny Ice Cap and local mountain ice caps; 2) the mass balance of the Boas Glacier; 3) air-sea interactions using ground stations, instrumented aircraft and satellite data; and 4) evaluation of climatic trends. ..
Elaborations on the String Dual to N=1 SQCD
In this paper we make further refinements to the duality proposed between N=1
SQCD and certain string (supergravity plus branes) backgrounds, working in the
regime of comparable large number of colors and flavors. Using the string
theory solutions, we predict different field theory observables and phenomena
like Seiberg duality, gauge coupling and its running, the behavior of Wilson
and 't Hooft loops, anomalous dimensions of the quark superfields, quartic
superpotential coupling and its running, continuous and discrete anomaly
matching. We also give evidence for the smooth interpolation between higgsed
and confining vacua. We provide several matchings between field theory and
string theory computations.Comment: 44 pages, 6 figures. References added, minor rewritings, published
