Competing density-wave orders in a one-dimensional hard-boson model
We describe the zero-temperature phase diagram of a model of bosons,
occupying sites of a linear chain, which obey a hard-exclusion constraint: any
two nearest-neighbor sites may have at most one boson. A special case of our
model was recently proposed as a description of a ``tilted'' Mott insulator of
atoms trapped in an optical lattice. Our quantum Hamiltonian is shown to
generate the transfer matrix of Baxter's hard-square model. Aided by exact
solutions of a number of special cases, and by numerical studies, we obtain a
phase diagram containing states with long-range density-wave order with period
2 and period 3, and also a floating incommensurate phase. Critical theories for
the various quantum phase transitions are presented. As a byproduct, we show
how to compute the Luttinger parameter in integrable theories with
hard-exclusion constraints.Comment: 16 page
Multidimensional Data Visual Exploration by Interactive Information Segments
Visualization techniques provide an outstanding role in KDD process for data analysis and mining. However, one image does not always convey successfully the inherent information from high dimensionality, very large databases. In this paper we introduce VSIS (Visual Set of Information Segments), an interactive tool to visually explore multidimensional, very large, numerical data. Within the supervised learning, our proposal approaches the problem of classification by searching of meaningful intervals belonging to the most relevant attributes. These intervals are displayed as multi–colored bars in which the degree of impurity with respect to the class membership can be easily perceived. Such bars can be re–explored interactively with new values of user–defined parameters. A case study of applying VSIS to some UCI repository data sets shows the usefulness of our tool in supporting the exploration of multidimensional and very large data
Order Parameters of the Dilute A Models
The free energy and local height probabilities of the dilute A models with
broken \Integer_2 symmetry are calculated analytically using inversion and
corner transfer matrix methods. These models possess four critical branches.
The first two branches provide new realisations of the unitary minimal series
and the other two branches give a direct product of this series with an Ising
model. We identify the integrable perturbations which move the dilute A models
away from the critical limit. Generalised order parameters are defined and
their critical exponents extracted. The associated conformal weights are found
to occur on the diagonal of the relevant Kac table. In an appropriate regime
the dilute A model lies in the universality class of the Ising model in a
magnetic field. In this case we obtain the magnetic exponent

Personalized immunosuppression in elderly renal transplant recipients
The number of elderly people has increased considerably over the last decades, due to a rising life expectancy and ageing populations. As a result, an increased number of elderly with end-stage-renal-disease are diagnosed, for which the preferred treatment is renal transplantation. Over the past years the awareness of the elderly as a specific patient population has grown, which increases the importance of research in this group.Elderly patients often receive kidneys from elderly donors while younger donor kidneys are preferentially reserved for younger recipients. Although the rate of acute rejection after transplantation is lower in the elderly, these rejections may lead to graft loss more frequently, as kidneys from elderly donors have marginal reserve capacity. To prevent acute rejection, immunosuppressive therapy is needed. On the other hand, elderly patients have a higher risk to die from infectious complications, and thus less immunosuppression would be preferable.Immunosuppressive treatm
On the Exact Evaluation of Certain Instances of the Potts Partition Function by Quantum Computers
We present an efficient quantum algorithm for the exact evaluation of either
the fully ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic q-state Potts partition function
Z for a family of graphs related to irreducible cyclic codes. This problem is
related to the evaluation of the Jones and Tutte polynomials. We consider the
connection between the weight enumerator polynomial from coding theory and Z
and exploit the fact that there exists a quantum algorithm for efficiently
estimating Gauss sums in order to obtain the weight enumerator for a certain
class of linear codes. In this way we demonstrate that for a certain class of
sparse graphs, which we call Irreducible Cyclic Cocycle Code (ICCC_\epsilon)
graphs, quantum computers provide a polynomial speed up in the difference
between the number of edges and vertices of the graph, and an exponential speed
up in q, over the best classical algorithms known to date

Pharmacogenetic aspects of the use of tacrolimus in renal transplantation: Recent developments and ethnic considerations
Introduction: Tacrolimus (Tac) is effective in preventing acute rejection but has considerable toxicity and inter-individual variability in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Part of this is explained by polymorphisms in genes encoding Tac-metabolizing enzymes and transporters. A better understanding of Tac pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics may help to minimize different outcomes amongst transplant recipients by personalizing immunosuppression.Areas covered: The pharmacogenetic contribution of Tac metabolism will be examined, with a focus on recent discoveries, new developments and ethnic considerations.Expert opinion: The strongest and most consistent association in pharmacogenetics is between the CYP3A5 genotype and Tac dose requirement, with CYP3A5 expressers having a ∼ 40-50% higher dose requirement compared to non-expressers. Two recent randomized-controlled clinical trials using CYP3A5 genotype, however, did not show a decrease in acute rejections nor reduced toxicity. CYP3A4∗22, CYP3A4∗26, and POR∗28 are also associated with Tac dose requirements and may be included to provide the expected improvement of Tac therapy. Studies focusing on the intracellular drug concentrations and on calcineurin inhibitor-induced nephrotoxicity also seem promising. For all studies, however, the ethnic prevalence of genotypes should be taken into account, as this may significantly impact the effect of pre-emptive genotyping
