    Theoretical investigation of the evolution of the topological phase of Bi2_{2}Se3_{3} under mechanical strain

    The topological insulating phase results from inversion of the band gap due to spin-orbit coupling at an odd number of time-reversal symmetric points. In Bi2_2Se3_3, this inversion occurs at the Γ\Gamma point. For bulk Bi2_2Se3_3, we have analyzed the effect of arbitrary strain on the Γ\Gamma point band gap using Density Functional Theory. By computing the band structure both with and without spin-orbit interactions, we consider the effects of strain on the gap via Coulombic interaction and spin-orbit interaction separately. While compressive strain acts to decrease the Coulombic gap, it also increases the strength of the spin-orbit interaction, increasing the inverted gap. Comparison with Bi2_2Te3_3 supports the conclusion that effects on both Coulombic and spin-orbit interactions are critical to understanding the behavior of topological insulators under strain, and we propose that the topological insulating phase can be effectively manipulated by inducing strain through chemical substitution

    Spin texture on the Fermi surface of tensile strained HgTe

    We present ab initio and k.p calculations of the spin texture on the Fermi surface of tensile strained HgTe, which is obtained by stretching the zincblende lattice along the (111) axis. Tensile strained HgTe is a semimetal with pointlike accidental degeneracies between a mirror symmetry protected twofold degenerate band and two nondegenerate bands near the Fermi level. The Fermi surface consists of two ellipsoids which contact at the point where the Fermi level crosses the twofold degenerate band along the (111) axis. However, the spin texture of occupied states indicates that neither ellipsoid carries a compensating Chern number. Consequently, the spin texture is locked in the plane perpendicular to the (111) axis, exhibits a nonzero winding number in that plane, and changes winding number from one end of the Fermi ellipsoids to the other. The change in the winding of the spin texture suggests the existence of singular points. An ordered alloy of HgTe with ZnTe has the same effect as stretching the zincblende lattice in the (111) direction. We present ab initio calculations of ordered Hg_xZn_1-xTe that confirm the existence of a spin texture locked in a 2D plane on the Fermi surface with different winding numbers on either end.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Neural responses to facial and vocal expressions of fear and disgust

    Neuropsychological studies report more impaired responses to facial expressions of fear than disgust in people with amygdala lesions, and vice versa in people with Huntington's disease. Experiments using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have confirmed the role of the amygdala in the response to fearful faces and have implicated the anterior insula in the response to facial expressions of disgust. We used fMRI to extend these studies to the perception of fear and disgust from both facial and vocal expressions. Consistent with neuropsychological findings, both types of fearful stimuli activated the amygdala. Facial expressions of disgust activated the anterior insula and the caudate-putamen; vocal expressions of disgust did not significantly activate either of these regions. All four types of stimuli activated the superior temporal gyrus. Our findings therefore (i) support the differential localization of the neural substrates of fear and disgust; (ii) confirm the involvement of the amygdala in the emotion of fear, whether evoked by facial or vocal expressions; (iii) confirm the involvement of the anterior insula and the striatum in reactions to facial expressions of disgust; and (iv) suggest a possible general role for the perception of emotional expressions for the superior temporal gyrus

    Attenuation of Stimulated Accumbal Dopamine Release by NMDA Is Mediated through Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors

    Electrically stimulated dopamine release from the nucleus accumbens is attenuated following application of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA), which is likely to be mediated indirectly through intermediary neuronal mechanisms rather than by a direct action on dopamine terminals. On the basis of known modulatory processes in nucleus accumbens, the current experiments sought to test whether the effect of NMDA was mediated through cholinergic, GABA-ergic, or metabotropic glutamatergic intermediate mechanisms. Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry was used to measure electrically stimulated dopamine release in nucleus accumbens of rat brain slices in vitro. Stimulated dopamine release was attenuated by NMDA, confirming previous findings, but this attenuation was unaffected by either cholinergic or GABA-ergic antagonists. However, it was completely abolished by the nonselective group I/II/III metabotropic glutamate receptor antagonist α-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine (MCPG) and by the selective group II antagonist LY 341396. Therefore, group II metabotropic glutamate receptors, but not acetylcholine or GABA receptors, mediate the attenuation of stimulated dopamine release caused by NMDA, probably by presynaptic inhibition through receptors located extra-synaptically on dopamine terminals. This provides a plausible mechanism for the documented role of metabotropic glutamate receptor systems in restoring deficits induced by NMDA receptor antagonists, modeling schizophrenia, underlining the potential for drugs affecting these receptors as therapeutic agents in treating schizophrenia

    A Chandra X-ray Study of Cygnus A - II. The Nucleus

    We report Chandra ACIS and quasi-simultaneous RXTE observations of the nearby, powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A, with the present paper focusing on the properties of the active nucleus. In the Chandra observation, the hard (> a few keV) X-ray emission is spatially unresolved with a size \approxlt 1 arcsec (1.5 kpc, H_0 = 50 km s^-1 Mpc^-1) and coincides with the radio and near infrared nuclei. In contrast, the soft (< 2 keV) emission exhibits a bi-polar nebulosity that aligns with the optical bi-polar continuum and emission-line structures and approximately with the radio jet. In particular, the soft X-ray emission corresponds very well with the [O III] \lambda 5007 and H\alpha + [N II] \lambda\lambda 6548, 6583 nebulosity imaged with HST. At the location of the nucleus there is only weak soft X-ray emission, an effect that may be intrinsic or result from a dust lane that crosses the nucleus perpendicular to the source axis. The spectra of the various X-ray components have been obtained by simultaneous fits to the 6 detectors. The compact nucleus is detected to 100 keV and is well described by a heavily absorbed power law spectrum with \Gamma_h = 1.52^{+0.12}_{-0.12} (similar to other narrow line radio galaxies) and equivalent hydrogen column N_H (nuc) = 2.0^{+0.1}_{-0.2} \times 10^{23} cm^-2.
