    The Cultivation of Valdivia gayana J. RÉMY.

    Valdivia gayana J. RĂ©my. is a herbaceous, sometimes sub-shrubby member of Escalloniaceae, a family dominated by woody species. It has a limited distribution in southern Chile and, to the knowledge of the authors, has not been cultivated in gardens outside Chile before. It is an unusual species in many senses and the collection and cultivation from seed at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is described here and suggestions for propagating the plant from cuttings are made

    NASA's Space Launch System: Secondary Payload Accommodations in Block 1 and Beyond

    Launching from pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center no earlier than December 2019, NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) will send the Orion crew vehicle to a distant retrograde lunar orbit in order to test and validate the new systems developed for SLS, Orion and Kennedy Space Center's Exploration Ground Systems (EGS). In addition to these primary mission objectives, the first integrated fight of NASA's new deep space exploration system, Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), offers accommodations for 13 6U CubeSats, which will be deployed in deep space after Orion separates from the SLS Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS). In 2017, the SLS Program, managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama, completed the ICPS and delivered it to the EGS Program, which has responsibility for stacking and launch operations. The 13 EM-1 secondary payloads will reside in the Orion Stage Adapter (OSA), which connects the ICPS to Orion's spacecraft adapter. The OSA is essentially complete with preparations being made for transporting the hardware to Kennedy Space Center with accommodations for secondary payload dispensers and with the secondary payload avionics unit installed

    Divorce is a leap in the dark. The paper investigates whether people who split up actually become happier. Using the British Household Panel Survey, we can observe an individual's level of psychological well-being in the years before and after divorce. Our results show that divorcing couples reap psychological gains from the dissolution of their marriages. Men and women benefit equally. The paper also studies the effects of bereavement, of having dependant children and of remarriage. We measure well-being by using general health questionnaire and life satisfaction scores

    A Chandra Observation of the Circinus Galaxy

    We report on a recent Chandra ACIS-S observation of the Circinus galaxy. These observations confirm that the nuclear spectrum results from reflection of a hard X-ray continuum by ``neutral'' matter. The nuclear X-ray emission is extended by \sim 60 pc in the general direction of the optical ``ionization cone''. An image in the Fe K\alpha line has been made and shows that this emission extends up to 200 pc from the nucleus. There is also large-scale X-ray emission both along and perpendicular to the galaxy disk. Thermal plasma models for this extended gas indicate temperatures kT \sim 0.6 keV, though cooler photoionized gas is also possible. The X-ray emission from gas in the disk is probably associated with the starburst ring of radius 150--250 pc. The gas extending \sim 600 pc perpendicular to the disk is closely correlated with the high-excitation optical-line emission. In addition to its soft X-ray emission, we tentatively detect a hard component from the gas above the plane; this hard emission may represent nuclear X-rays scattered into our line of sight by electrons in the outflowing wind. Ten compact sources are found in the central kpc of the galaxy. The most luminous has an X-ray luminosity of \simeq 10^{40} erg s^{-1} and seems to be an X-ray binary in the Circinus galaxy with a black-hole mass exceeding 80 M_{\odot}.Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures.     WFPC2 Observations of the Hubble Deep Field-South

    The Hubble Deep Field-South observations targeted a high-galactic-latitude field near QSO J2233-606. We present WFPC2 observations of the field in four wide bandpasses centered at roughly 300, 450, 606, and 814 nm. Observations, data reduction procedures, and noise properties of the final images are discussed in detail. A catalog of sources is presented, and the number counts and color distributions of the galaxies are compared to a new catalog of the HDF-N that has been constructed in an identical manner. The two fields are qualitatively similar, with the galaxy number counts for the two fields agreeing to within 20%. The HDF-S has more candidate Lyman-break galaxies at z > 2 than the HDF-N. The star-formation rate per unit volume computed from the HDF-S, based on the UV luminosity of high-redshift candidates, is a factor of 1.9 higher than from the HDF-N at z ~ 2.7, and a factor of 1.3 higher at z ~ 4.Comment: 93 pages, 25 figures; contains very long table

    Multimodal analysis of ocular inflammation using the endotoxin-induced uveitis mouse model

    Endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) in rodents is a model of acute Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-mediated organ inflammation, and has been used to model human anterior uveitis, examine leukocyte trafficking and test novel anti-inflammatory therapeutics. Wider adoption has been limited by the requirement for manual, non-specific, cell-count scoring of histological sections from each eye as a measure of disease severity. Here, we describe a comprehensive and efficient technique that uses ocular dissection and multimodal tissue analysis. This allows matched disease scoring by multicolour flow cytometric analysis of the inflammatory infiltrate, protein analysis on ocular supernatants and qPCR on remnant tissues of the same eye. Dynamic changes in cell populations could be identified and mapped to chemokine and cytokine changes over the course of the model. To validate the technique, dose-responsive suppression of leukocyte infiltration by recombinant interleukin-10 was demonstrated, as well as selective suppression of the monocyte (CD11b+Ly6C+) infiltrate, in mice deficient for either Ccl2 or Ccr2. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used for the first time in this model to allow in vivo imaging of infiltrating vitreous cells, and correlated with CD11b+Ly6G+ counts to provide another unique measure of cell populations in the ocular tissue. Multimodal tissue analysis of EIU is proposed as a new standard to improve and broaden the application of this model

    Composition, Development, and Function of Uterine Innate Lymphoid Cells.

    Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), including NK cells, contribute to barrier immunity and tissue homeostasis. In addition to the role of uterine NK cells in placentation and fetal growth, other uterine ILCs (uILCs) are likely to play roles in uterine physiology and pathology. In this article, we report on the composition of uILCs in the endometrium during the luteal phase and in the decidua during early pregnancy. Whereas nonkiller uILC1s and uILC2s are barely detectable in mouse and not detected in humans, a sizeable population of uILC3s is found in human endometrium and decidua, which are mostly NCR(+) and partially overlap with previously described IL-22-producing uterine NK cells. Development of mouse uILC3 is Nfil3 independent, suggesting unique features of uILCs. Indeed, although the cytokine production profile of mouse uILCs recapitulates that described in other tissues, IL-5, IL-17, and IL-22 are constitutively produced by uILC2s and uILC3s.
