Relative age effect in elite soccer: more early-born players, but no better valued, and no paragon clubs or countries
The paper analyses two datasets of elite soccer players (top 1000 professionals and UEFA Under-19 Youth League). In both, we find a Relative Age Effect (RAE) for frequency, but not for value. That is, while there are more players born at the start of the competition year, their transfer values are no higher, nor are they given more game time. We use Poisson regression to derive a transparent index of the discrimination present in RAE. Also, because Poisson is valid for small frequency counts, it supports analysis at the disaggregated levels of country and club. From this, we conclude there are no paragon clubs or countries immune to RAE; that is clubs and countries do not differ systematically in the RAE they experience; also, that Poisson regression is a powerful and flexible method of analysing RAE data

Sensitivity Comparison of Two-photon vs Three-photon Rydberg Electrometry
We investigate the sensitivity of three-photon EIT in Rydberg atoms to radio
frequency detection and compare it against conventional two-photon systems.
Specifically, we model the 4-level and 5-level atomic system and compare how
the transmission of the probe changes with different powers of the lasers used
and strengths of the RF field. In this model, we also define a sensitivity
metric to best relate to the operation of the current best experimental
implementation based on shot noise limited detection. We find that the
three-photon system boasts much narrower line widths compared to the
conventional two-photon EIT. However, these narrow line features do not align
with the regions of the best sensitivity. In addition to this, we calculate the
expected sensitivity for the two-photon Rydberg sensor and find that the best
achievable sensitivity is over an order of magnitude better than the current
measured values of 5 uV/m/Hz. However, by accounting for the additional noise
sources in the experiment and the quantum efficiency of the photo-detectors,
the values are in good agreement.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Equivalence testing of a newly developed interviewer-led telephone script for the EORTC QLQ-C30
Purpose
The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life-Core Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) is a widely used generic self-report measure of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for cancer patients. However, no validated voice script for interviewer-led telephone administration was previously available. The aim of this study was to develop a voice script for interviewer administration via telephone.
Methods
Following guidelines from the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) PRO Mixed Modes Good Research Practices Task Force, a randomised cross-over equivalence study, including cognitive debriefing, was conducted to assess equivalence between paper and telephone administration modes. Assuming an expected intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.70 and a minimally acceptable level of 0.50, a sample size of 63 was required.
Results
Cognitive interviews with five cancer patients found the voice script to be clear and understandable. Due to a protocol deviation in the first wave of testing, only 26 patients were available for analyses. A second wave of recruitment was conducted, adding 37 patients (n = 63; mean age 55.48; 65.1% female). Total ICCs for mode comparison ranged from 0.72 (nausea and vomiting, 95% CI 0.48–0.86) to 0.90 (global health status/QoL, 95% CI 0.80–0.95; pain, 95% CI 0.79–0.95; constipation, 95% CI 0.80–0.95). For paper first administration, all ICCs were above 0.70, except nausea and vomiting (ICC 0.55; 95% CI 0.24–0.76) and financial difficulties (ICC 0.60; 95% CI 0.31–0.79). For phone first administration, all ICCs were above 0.70.
Conclusions
The equivalence testing results support the voice script’s validity for administration of the QLQ-C30 via telephone
Rapid, -insensitive, dual-band quasi-adiabatic saturation transfer with optimal control for complete quantification of myocardial ATP flux
Purpose: Phosphorus saturation-transfer experiments can quantify metabolic
fluxes non-invasively. Typically, the forward flux through the creatine-kinase
reaction is investigated by observing the decrease in phosphocreatine (PCr)
after saturation of -ATP. The quantification of total ATP utilisation
is currently under-explored, as it requires simultaneous saturation of
inorganic phosphate (Pi) and PCr. This is challenging, as currently available
saturation pulses reduce the already-low -ATP signal present.
Methods: Using a hybrid optimal-control and Shinnar-Le-Roux method, a
quasi-adiabatic RF pulse was designed for the dual-saturation of PCr and Pi to
enable determination of total ATP utilisation. The pulses were evaluated in
Bloch equation simulations, compared with a conventional hard-cosine DANTE
saturation sequence, before application to perfused rat hearts at 11.7 Tesla.
Results: The quasi-adiabatic pulse was insensitive to a -fold variation
in , producing equivalent saturation with a 53% reduction in delivered
pulse power and a 33-fold reduction in spillover at the minimum effective
. This enabled the complete quantification of the synthesis and
degradation fluxes for ATP in 30-45 minutes in the perfused rat heart. While
the net synthesis flux ( mM/s, SEM) was not significantly different
from degradation flux ( mM/s, ) and both measures are
consistent with prior work, nonlinear error analysis highlights uncertainties
in the Pi-to-ATP measurement that may explain a trend suggesting a possible
imbalance.
Conclusion: This work demonstrates a novel quasi-adiabatic dual-saturation RF
pulse with significantly improved performance that can be used to measure ATP

Steady-State Growth under Inorganic Carbon Limitation Conditions Increases Energy Consumption for Maintenance and Enhances Nitrous Oxide Production in Nitrosomonas europaea
Nitrosomonas europaea is a chemolithoautotrophic bacterium that oxidizes ammonia (NH₃) to obtain energy for growth on carbon dioxide (CO₂) and can also produce nitrous oxide (N₂O), a greenhouse gas. We interrogated the growth, physiological, and transcriptome responses of N. europaea to conditions of replete (>5.2 mM) and limited inorganic carbon (IC) provided by either 1.0 mM or 0.2 mM sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) supplemented with atmospheric CO₂. IC-limited cultures oxidized 25 to 58% of available NH₃ to nitrite, depending on the dilution rate and Na₂CO₃ concentration. IC limitation resulted in a 2.3-fold increase in cellular maintenance energy requirements compared to those for NH₃-limited cultures. Rates of N₂O production increased 2.5- and 6.3-fold under the two IC-limited conditions, increasing the percentage of oxidized NH₃-N that was transformed to N₂O-N from 0.5% (replete) up to 4.4% (0.2 mM Na₂CO₃). Transcriptome analysis showed differential expression (P ≤ 0.05) of 488 genes (20% of inventory) between replete and IC-limited conditions, but few differences were detected between the two IC-limiting treatments. IC-limited conditions resulted in a decreased expression of ammonium/ammonia transporter and ammonia monooxygenase subunits and increased the expression of genes involved in C₁ metabolism, including the genes for RuBisCO (cbb gene cluster), carbonic anhydrase, folate-linked metabolism of C₁ moieties, and putative C salvage due to oxygenase activity of RuBisCO. Increased expression of nitrite reductase (gene cluster NE0924 to NE0927) correlated with increased production of N₂O. Together, these data suggest that N. europaea adapts physiologically during IC-limited steady-state growth, which leads to the uncoupling of NH₃ oxidation from growth and increased N₂O production.
IMPORTANCE: Nitrification, the aerobic oxidation of ammonia to nitrate via nitrite, is an important process in the global nitrogen cycle. This process is generally dependent on ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. Most nitrifiers are chemolithoautotrophs that fix inorganic carbon (CO₂) for growth. Here, we investigate how inorganic carbon limitation modifies the physiology and transcriptome of Nitrosomonas europaea, a model ammonia-oxidizing bacterium, and report on increased production of N₂O, a potent greenhouse gas. This study, along with previous work, suggests that inorganic carbon limitation may be an important factor in controlling N₂O emissions from nitrification in soils and wastewater treatment
Results from a 1-day workshop on the assessment of quality of life in cancer patients: a joint initiative of the Japan Clinical Oncology Group and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer
This report summarizes the presentations and discussion in the first Japan Clinical Oncology Group-European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life/Patient-Reported Outcome workshop funded by the National Cancer Center Hospital that was held on Saturday, 1 September 2018 in Tokyo, Japan. The infrastructure and understanding regarding the Quality of Life/Patient-Reported Outcome assessment of cancer patients in Japan is still immature, in spite of the increased demand for oncological Patient-Reported Outcome research felt not only by researchers but also by patients or other stakeholders of cancer drug development. The workshop aimed to share each perspective, common issues to be considered and future perspectives regarding the strong alliance between the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Group and the Japan Clinical Oncology Group for Quality of Life/Patient-Reported Outcome research as well as explore the possibility of conducting collaborative research. European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer is a leading international cancer clinical trials organization, and its Quality of Life Group is a global leader in the implementation of Quality of Life research in cancer patients. The three invited speakers from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Group presented their perspective, latest methodology and ongoing projects. The three speakers from the Japan Clinical Oncology Group presented their current status, experience and some issues regarding data management or interpretation of the Patient-Reported Outcome data. The two patient advocates also shared their expectations in terms of advances in cancer research based on the Patient-Reported Outcome assessment. As the next steps after this workshop, the Japan Clinical Oncology Group and European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer have decided to cooperate more closely to facilitate Patient-Reported Outcome research in both the groups, and the Japan Clinical Oncology Group has approved the establishment of a new committee for Quality of Life/Patient-Reported Outcome research in Japan
Validation of the German version of the Family Reported Outcome Measure (FROM-16) to assess the impact of disease on the partner or family member
Background
The Family Reported Outcome Measure (FROM-16) assesses the impact of a patient’s chronic illness on the quality of life (QoL) of the patient’s partner or family members. The aim of the study was to translate, explore the structure of and validate the FROM-16.
Methods
The questionnaire was translated from English into German (forward, backward, four independent translators). Six interviews with family members were conducted to confirm the questionnaire for linguistic, conceptual, semantic and experiential equivalence and its practicability. The final German translation was tested for internal consistency, reproducibility and test validity. Criterion validity was tested by correlating the scores of the FROM-16 and the Global Health Scale (GHS). Principal component analysis, factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the questionnaire’s structure and its domains. Reliability and reproducibility were tested computing the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) using one sample t-test for testing the hypothesis that the difference between the scores was not different from zero.
Results
Overall, 83 family members (61% female, median age: 61 years) completed the questionnaire at two different times (mean interval: 22 days). Internal consistency was good for the FROM-16 scores (Cronbach’s α for total score = 0.86). In those with stable GHS, the ICC for the total score was 0.87 and the difference was not different from zero (p = 0.262) indicating reproducible results. A bi-factor model with a general factor including all items, and two sub-factors comprising the items from the original 2-factor construct had the best fit.
Conclusions
The German FROM-16 has good reliability, test validity and practicability. It can be considered as an appropriate and generic tool to measure QoL of a patient’s partner or family member. Due to the presence of several cross-loadings we do not recommend the reporting of the scores of the two domains proposed for the original version of FROM-16 when using the German version. Thus, in reporting the results emphasis should be put on the total score
Health-related quality-of-life results from the randomised phase II TAVAREC trial on temozolomide with or without bevacizumab in 1p/19q intact first-recurrence World Health Organization grade 2 and 3 glioma (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer 26091)
Background: In an international randomised controlled phase II study of temozolomide (TMZ) versus TMZ in combination with bevacizumab (BEV) in locally diagnosed non-1p/19q co-deleted World Health Organization grade 2 or 3 gliomas with a first and contrast-enhancing recurrence after initial radiotherapy, and overall survival at 12 months was not significantly different (61% in the TMZ arm and 55% in the TMZ + BEV arm). Objectives: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was a key secondary end-point in this trial, and the main objective of this study was to determine the impact of the addition of BEV to TMZ on HRQoL. Methods: HRQoL was assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 (version 3) and QLQ-BN20 at baseline, and then every 12 weeks until disease progression. The pre-selected primary HRQoL end-point was the QLQ-C30 global health scale, with self-perceived cognitive functioning and pain selected as secondary HRQoL issues. Analysis was undertaken using linear mixed modelling and complemented with sensitivity analyses using summary statistics. A difference was considered clinically relevant with ≥10 points difference on a 100-point scale. Results: Baseline compliance was high at 94% and remained above 60% until 72 weeks, limiting the analysis to 60 weeks. Compliance was similar in both arms. We found no statistically significant or clinically significant differences between the primary HRQoL end-point in both treatment arms (p = 0.2642). The sensitivity analyses confirmed this finding. The overall test for post-baseline differences between the two treatment arms also showed no statistically or clinically significant differences regarding the selected secondary end-point scales. Interpretation: The addition of BEV to TMZ in this patient group neither improves nor negatively impacts HRQoL.</p
