    Large-Scale Integration of Nanoelectromechanical Systems for Gas Sensing Applications

    We have developed arrays of nanomechanical systems (NEMS) by large-scale integration, comprising thousands of individual nanoresonators with densities of up to 6 million NEMS per square centimeter. The individual NEMS devices are electrically coupled using a combined series-parallel configuration that is extremely robust with respect to lithographical defects and mechanical or electrostatic-discharge damage. Given the large number of connected nanoresonators, the arrays are able to handle extremely high input powers (>1 W per array, corresponding to <1 mW per nanoresonator) without excessive heating or deterioration of resonance response. We demonstrate the utility of integrated NEMS arrays as high-performance chemical vapor sensors, detecting a part-per-billion concentration of a chemical warfare simulant within only a 2 s exposure period

    Piezoelectric nanoelectromechanical resonators based on aluminum nitride thin films

    We demonstrate piezoelectrically actuated, electrically tunable nanomechanical resonators based on multilayers containing a 100-nm-thin aluminum nitride (AlN) layer. Efficient piezoelectric actuation of very high frequency fundamental flexural modes up to ~80 MHz is demonstrated at room temperature. Thermomechanical fluctuations of AlN cantilevers measured by optical interferometry enable calibration of the transduction responsivity and displacement sensitivities of the resonators. Measurements and analyses show that the 100 nm AlN layer employed has an excellent piezoelectric coefficient, d_(31)=2.4 pm/V.     Ingestive Behavior of Beef Cattle Fed Either Protein or Energy Supplements under a Rotational Grazing System

    Eight Nellore bullocks were assigned to a TanzĂąnia grass pasture (Panicum maximum Jacq.) under a rotational grazing system, to evaluate the ingestive behavior under two different grazing residues. Stocking rate intensity was used to reach either 1000 kg DM.ha-1 (R1) or 4000 kg DM.ha-1 (R2) as residual targets. Three grazing days followed by 33 days resting period, composed a 36 day grazing cycle. Each grazing plot supported four animals, in a 4x4 Latin square design, within the following supplementation rates and sources: S1 = no supplement; S2 = 2,0 kg DM.day-1 coarsely ground corn - 8 mm sieve; S3 = 2,0 kg DM.day-1 steam flaked corn (360 g/L) and S4 = 0,7 kg DM.day-1 soybean meal. Grazing behavior measurements were taken every 15 days after 9 a day adaptation period, during two consecutive summer grazing cycles. Animal activities were recorded every 5 minutes during day time and 15 minutes during night time throughout a 24 hour period. Supplementation with S2 decreased (P \u3c 0,05) rumination time under a higher grazing residue (R2). Both grazing and rumination time were increased and led to a decreased resting time (P \u3c 0,05) in R2 animals compared with R1

    The existence of nonnegative radially symmetric eternal solutions of exponential self-similar type u(t,x)=e−pÎČt/(2−p)fÎČ(∣x∣e−ÎČt;ÎČ)u(t,x)=e^{-p\beta t/(2-p)} f_\beta(|x|e^{-\beta t};\beta) is investigated for the singular diffusion equation with critical gradient absorption \begin{equation*} \partial_{t} u-\Delta_{p} u+|\nabla u|^{p/2}=0 \quad \;\;\hbox{in}\;\; (0,\infty)\times\real^N \end{equation*} where 2N/(N+1)<p<22N/(N+1) < p < 2. Such solutions are shown to exist only if the parameter ÎČ\beta ranges in a bounded interval (0,ÎČ∗](0,\beta_*] which is in sharp contrast with well-known singular diffusion equations such as ∂tϕ−Δpϕ=0\partial_{t}\phi-\Delta_{p} \phi=0 when p=2N/(N+1)p=2N/(N+1) or the porous medium equation ∂tϕ−Δϕm=0\partial_{t}\phi-\Delta\phi^m=0 when m=(N−2)/Nm=(N-2)/N. Moreover, the profile f(r;ÎČ)f(r;\beta) decays to zero as r→∞r\to\infty in a faster way for ÎČ=ÎČ∗\beta=\beta_* than for ÎČ∈(0,ÎČ∗)\beta\in (0,\beta_*) but the algebraic leading order is the same in both cases. In fact, for large rr, f(r;ÎČ∗)f(r;\beta_*) decays as r−p/(2−p)r^{-p/(2-p)} while f(r;ÎČ)f(r;\beta) behaves as (log⁥r)2/(2−p)r−p/(2−p)(\log r)^{2/(2-p)} r^{-p/(2-p)} when ÎČ∈(0,ÎČ∗)\beta\in (0,\beta_*)

    Ultrasonography of quadriceps femoris muscle and subcutaneous fat tissue and body composition by BIVA in chronic dialysis patients

    Protein Energy Wasting (PEW) in hemodialysis (HD) patients is a multifactorial condition due to specific pathology-related pathogenetic mechanisms, leading to loss of skeletal muscle mass in HD patients. Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging still represent the gold standard techniques for body composition assessment. However, their widespread application in clinical practice is difficult and body composition evaluation in HD patients is mainly based on conventional anthropometric nutritional indexes and bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA). Little data is currently available on ultrasound (US)-based measurements of muscle mass and fat tissue in this clinical setting. The purpose of our study is to ascertain: (1) if there are differences between quadriceps rectus femoris muscle (QRFM) thickness and abdominal/thigh subcutaneous fat tissue (SFT) measured by US between HD patients and healthy subjects; (2) if there is any correlation between QRFM and abdominal/thigh SFT thickness by US, and BIVA/conventional nutritional indexes in HD patients. We enrolled 65 consecutive HD patients and 33 healthy subjects. Demographic and laboratory were collected. The malnutrition inflammation score (MIS) was calculated. Using B-mode US system, the QRFM and SFT thicknesses were measured at the level of three landmarks in both thighs (superior anterior iliac spine, upper pole of the patella, the midpoint of the tract included between the previous points). SFT was also measured at the level of the periumbilical point. The mono frequency (50 KHz) BIVA was conducted using bioelectrical measurements (Rz, resistance; Xc, reactance; adjusted for height, Rz/H and Xc/H; PA, phase angle). 58.5% were men and the mean age was 69 (SD 13.7) years. QRFM and thigh SFT thicknesses were reduced in HD patients as compared to healthy subjects (p &lt; 0.01). Similarly, also BIVA parameters, expression of lean body mass, were lower (p &lt; 0.001), except for Rz and Rz/H in HD patients. The average QRFM thickness of both thighs at top, mid, lower landmarks were positively correlated with PA and body cell mass (BCM) by BIVA, while negatively correlated with Rz/H (p &lt; 0.05). Abdominal SFT was positively correlated with PA, BCM and basal metabolic rate (BMR) (p &lt; 0.05). Our study shows that ultrasound QRFM and thigh SFT thicknesses were reduced in HD patients and that muscle ultrasound measurements were significantly correlated with BIVA parameters

    The effects of somatostatin analogues on liver volume and quality of life in polycystic liver disease: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

    A clear evidence on the benefits of somatostatin analogues (SA) on liver outcome in patients affected by polycystic liver disease is still lacking. We performed a meta-analysis of RCTs and a trial sequential analysis (TSA) evaluating the effects of SA in adult patients with polycystic liver disease on change in liver volume. As secondary outcome, we evaluated the effects on quality of life as measured by SF36-questionnaire. Six RCTs were selected with an overall sample size of 332 adult patients with polycystic liver disease (mean age: 46 years). Mean liver volume at baseline was 3289 ml in SA group and 3089 ml in placebo group. Overall, unstandardized mean difference in liver volume was − 176 ml (95%CI, − 406, 54; p < 0.133). Heterogeneity was low (I2:0%, p < 0.992). However, we performed a moderator analysis and we found that a higher eGFR significantly correlates to a more pronounced effect of SA on liver volume reduction (p = 0.036). Cumulative Z-curve in TSA did not reach either significance and futility boundaries or required information size. Three RCTs have evaluated Quality of life parameters measured by SF36-QOL questionnaire for a total of 124 patients; no significant difference was found on the effect of SA on QOL parameters when compared with placebo. The present meta-analysis revealed a potential effect of SA on reduction of liver volume and quality of life parameters, but results did not reach a statistical significance. These data could be explained by the need of further studies, as demonstrated through TSA, to reach an adequate sample size to confirm the beneficial outcomes of SAs treatment

    Sympathovagal balance and 1-h postload plasma glucose in normoglucose tolerant hypertensive patients.

    AIMS: Normoglucose tolerant (NGT) subjects with a 1-h postload plasma glucose (PLPG) value ≄155 mg/dL have an increased risk of type-2 diabetes and subclinical organ damage. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects cardiac autonomic balance, frequently impaired in course of diabetes. At this time, no data support the association between 1-h PLPG and HRV; thus, we investigated the possible association between 1-h PLPG and HRV. METHODS: We enrolled 92 never-treated hypertensive subjects (56 women, 36 men), aged 55 ± 9.8 years. During OGTT, the patients underwent electrocardiographic recordings to evaluate HRV in the time domain (SDNN). Insulin sensitivity was assessed by Matsuda index. RESULTS: Among participants, 56 were NGT, 20 had impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and 16 had type-2 diabetes. According to the 1-h PLPG cutoff point of 155 mg/dL, we divided NGT subjects into: NGT &lt; 155 (n = 38) and NGT ≄ 155 (n = 18). Glucose tolerance status was associated with a significant (P &lt; 0.0001) increase in PLPG and insulin and the reduction in Matsuda index. In all groups, the SDNN values significantly (P &lt; 0.0001) decreased during the first hour of OGTT. A complete recovery in NGT groups was observed at the end of the second hour; in IGT and type-2 diabetes, SDNN remained significantly lower with respect to baseline values. At multiple regression analysis, Matsuda index resulted in the only determinant of SDNN modification, explaining the 12.3 % of its variability. CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrate that during OGTT, sympathovagal balance is acutely affected by both glucose and insulin modifications. Particularly, NGT ≄ 155 subjects behave in the same way of IGT and type-2 diabetes patients

    Pedestrians moving in dark: Balancing measures and playing games on lattices

    We present two conceptually new modeling approaches aimed at describing the motion of pedestrians in obscured corridors: * a Becker-D\"{o}ring-type dynamics * a probabilistic cellular automaton model. In both models the group formation is affected by a threshold. The pedestrians are supposed to have very limited knowledge about their current position and their neighborhood; they can form groups up to a certain size and they can leave them. Their main goal is to find the exit of the corridor. Although being of mathematically different character, the discussion of both models shows that it seems to be a disadvantage for the individual to adhere to larger groups. We illustrate this effect numerically by solving both model systems. Finally we list some of our main open questions and conjectures

    International audienceWe study the large time behavior of non-negative solutions to thenonlinear diffusion equation with critical gradient absorption\partial_t u-\Delta_{p}u+|\nabla u|^{q_*}=0 \quad \hbox{in} \(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N\ ,for p∈(2,∞)p\in(2,\infty) and q∗:=p−N/(N+1)q_*:=p-N/(N+1). We show that theasymptotic profile of compactly supported solutions is given by asource-type self-similar solution of the pp-Laplacian equation with suitable logarithmic time and space scales. In the process, we also get optimal decay rates for compactly supported solutions and optimal expansion rates for their supports that strongly improve previous results
