Pax proteins in embryogenesis and their role in nervous system development

    Get PDF
The mammalian Pax genes encode a family of transcription factors, which play important roles in embryonic development and organogenesis. During the central nervous system development Pax genes have substantial roles in neural differentiation and regional specification. Pax proteins are expressed in populations of nerve cells within the developing forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain and spinal cord. In this article the fundamental roles of Pax proteins in the embryogenesis are outlined and the temporal and spatial influences of Pax on the formation of the central nervous system are discussed

Cell proliferation and apoptosis in wistar rat kidney after renal mass ablation and low-dose irradiation

    Get PDF
Cell proliferation and apoptosis in the remnant rat kidney after treatment with lowdose irradiation was investigated. Material and methods. In the first group (n=9), adult male Wistar rats underwent 5/6 nephrectomy (NPX); in the second group (n=9), NPX was combined with low-dose irradiation. Rats without surgery and irradiation formed the control group (n=9). Results. Hypertension and proteinuria induced by NPX were decreased by 3-Gy irradiation. The 5/6 NPX rats showed a dramatic increase in proliferating and apoptotic cells in the glomeruli and in the distal tubules at week 2, which was significantly decreased by low-dose irradiation. Conclusion. The data demonstrate that low-dose irradiation is a factor slowing the process of chronic renal injury.publishersversionPeer reviewe

Trophinin and integrin β3 expression in the human endometrium. A pilot study

    Get PDF
The study involved ten patients with tubal factor infertility. Patients (Group I, age 28–34 years, n=5; Group II, age 35–40 years, n=5) underwent endometrial biopsy on postovulatory days 7–10 of the natural menstrual cycle. Endometrial biopsies were studied by histological methods, presence of trophinin and integrin β3 in the endometrial surface epithelium and in the glandular epithelium was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Low levels of β3 integrin and trophinin were estimated in the endometrial epithelial cells in most patients, particularly in Group II, which reflects reduced endometrial capacity for adhesion and points to problems with the implantation of the embryo
