    Comparison of Variational Approaches for the Exactly Solvable 1/r-Hubbard Chain

    We study Hartree-Fock, Gutzwiller, Baeriswyl, and combined Gutzwiller-Baeriswyl wave functions for the exactly solvable one-dimensional 1/r1/r-Hubbard model. We find that none of these variational wave functions is able to correctly reproduce the physics of the metal-to-insulator transition which occurs in the model for half-filled bands when the interaction strength equals the bandwidth. The many-particle problem to calculate the variational ground state energy for the Baeriswyl and combined Gutzwiller-Baeriswyl wave function is exactly solved for the~1/r1/r-Hubbard model. The latter wave function becomes exact both for small and large interaction strength, but it incorrectly predicts the metal-to-insulator transition to happen at infinitely strong interactions. We conclude that neither Hartree-Fock nor Jastrow-type wave functions yield reliable predictions on zero temperature phase transitions in low-dimensional, i.e., charge-spin separated systems.Comment: 23 pages + 3 figures available on request; LaTeX under REVTeX 3.

    Neurovascular disease in Switzerland: 10-year trends show non-traditional risk factors on the rise and higher exposure in women

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Effective risk factor modification is the prerequisite to prevent neurovascular disease such as stroke or vascular dementia. Non-traditional vascular risk factors (nt-vrfs) including stress significantly add to the risk of neurovascular disease arising from traditional vascular risk factors (t-vrfs). In order to discover sex-specific changes that may underlie previously reported inclines in the prevalence of neurovascular and cardiovascular disease in women, 10-year trends in the prevalence of vrfs in Switzerland were assessed. METHODS Anonymized data from 22,134 participants (51% women) of the governmental Swiss Health Survey, performed every 5 years (2007, 2012 and 2017), were obtained. Epidemiological parameters, t-vrfs and nt-vrfs were analyzed in a cross-sectional study design. RESULTS Over the observation period, the number of women having full-time jobs increased considerably (2007 38%, 2012 39%, 2017 44%). This was accompanied by a substantial rise in the prevalence of nt-vrfs in women and men including stress at work (2007, not available; 2012 women/men 58%/60%; 2017 women/men 66%/65%), low locus of control (women/men: 2007 21%/19%, 2012 22%/19%, 2017 25%/22%) and sleep disorders (women/men: 2007 30%/22%, 2012 28%/20%, 2017 32%/26%). Amongst t-vrfs, only the prevalence of obesity and hypercholesterolemia increased over time in both sexes, whilst other t-vrfs remained stable (hypertension [27%], diabetes [5%]) or decreased (smoking [9.4 cigarettes/day]). CONCLUSIONS A rise in women's economic participation alongside a higher affection with nt-vrfs in the female Swiss population emphasizes the need to improve vascular risk stratification and implement effective preventive measures for neurovascular and cardiovascular disease

    Rapid and sensitive detection of CpG-methylation using methyl-binding (MB)-PCR

    Methylation of CpG islands is associated with transcriptional repression and, in cancer, leads to the abnormal silencing of tumor suppressor genes. We have developed a novel technique for detecting CpG-methylated DNA termed methyl-binding (MB)-PCR. This technique utilizes a recombinant protein with high affinity for CpG-methylated DNA that is coated onto the walls of a PCR vessel and selectively captures methylated DNA fragments from a mixture of genomic DNA. The retention and, hence, the degree of methylation of a specific DNA fragment (e.g. a CpG island promoter of a specific gene) is detected in the same tube by gene-specific PCR. MB-PCR does not require bisulfite treatment or methylation-sensitive restriction and provides a quick, simple and extremely sensitive technique allowing the detection of methylated DNA, in particular in tumor tissue or tumor cells from limited samples. Using this novel approach, we determined the methylation status of several established and candidate tumor suppressor genes and identified the ICSBP gene, encoding the myeloid and B-cell-specific transcription factor interferon consensus sequence-binding protein, as a target for aberrant hypermethylation in acute myeloid leukemia

    Changes in the Building Stock of Da Nang between 2015 and 2017

    This descriptor introduces a novel dataset, which contains the number and types of buildings in the city of Da Nang in Central Vietnam. The buildings were classified into nine distinct types and initially extracted from a satellite image of the year 2015. Secondly, changes were identified based on a visual interpretation of an image of the year 2017, so that new buildings, demolished buildings and building upgrades can be quantitatively analyzed. The data was aggregated by administrative wards and a hexagonal grid with a diameter of 250 m to protect personal rights and to avoid the misuse of a single building’s information. The dataset shows an increase of 19,391 buildings between October 2015 and August 2017, with a variety of interesting spatial patterns. The center of the city is mostly dominated by building changes and upgrades, while most of the new buildings were constructed within a distance of five to six kilometers from the city center

    Digital contact tracing/notification for SARS-CoV-2: navigating six points of failure

    Digital contact tracing/notification was initially hailed as a promising strategy to combat SARS-CoV-2, but in most jurisdictions it did not live up to its promise. To avert a given transmission event, both parties must have adopted the tech, it must detect the contact, the primary case must be promptly diagnosed, notifications must be triggered, and the secondary case must change their behavior to avoid the focal tertiary transmission event. If we approximate these as independent events, achieving a 26% reduction in R(t) would require 80% success rates at each of these six points of failure. Here we review the six failure rates experienced by a variety of digital contact tracing/notification schemes, including Singapore's TraceTogether, India's Aarogya Setu, and leading implementations of the Google Apple Exposure Notification system. This leads to a number of recommendations, e.g. that tracing/notification apps be multi-functional and integrated with testing, manual contact tracing, and the gathering of critical scientific data, and that the narrative be framed in terms of user autonomy rather than user privacy

    Computerized Assessment of Pedophilic Sexual Interest Through Self-Report and Viewing Time: Reliability, Validity, and Classification Accuracy of the Affinity Program

    Affinity is a computerized assessment tool that combines viewing time and self-report measures of sexual interest. The present study was designed to assess the diagnostic properties of Affinity with respect to sexual interest in prepubescent children. Reliability of both self-report and viewing time components was estimated to be high. The group profile of a sample of pedophilic adult male child molesters (n = 42, all of whom admitted their offenses) differed from the group profiles of male community controls (n = 95) and male nonsexual offenders (n = 27), respectively. More specifically, both ratings and viewing times for images showing small children or prejuvenile children were significantly higher within the child molester sample than in either of the other two groups, attesting to the validity of the measures. Overall classification accuracy, however, was mediocre: A multivariate classification routine yielded 50% sensitivity for child molester status at the cost of 13% false positives. The implications for forensic use of Affinity are discussed

    The ABC transporter DerAB of <i>Lactobacillus casei</i> mediates resistance against insect-derived defensins

    Bce-like systems mediate resistance against antimicrobial peptides in Firmicutes bacteria. Lactobacillus casei BL23 encodes an “orphan” ABC transporter that, based on homology to BceAB-like systems, was proposed to contribute to antimicrobial peptide resistance. A mutant lacking the permease subunit was tested for sensitivity against a collection of peptides derived from bacteria, fungi, insects, and humans. Our results show that the transporter specifically conferred resistance against insect-derived cysteine-stabilized αβ defensins, and it was therefore renamed DerAB for defensin resistance ABC transporter. Surprisingly, cells lacking DerAB showed a marked increase in resistance against the lantibiotic nisin. This could be explained by significantly increased expression of the antimicrobial peptide resistance determinants regulated by the Bce-like systems PsdRSAB (formerly module 09) and ApsRSAB (formerly module 12). Bacterial two-hybrid studies in Escherichia coli showed that DerB could interact with proteins of the sensory complex in the Psd resistance system. We therefore propose that interaction of DerAB with this complex in the cell creates signaling interference and reduces the cell’s potential to mount an effective nisin resistance response. In the absence of DerB, this negative interference is relieved, leading to the observed hyperactivation of the Psd module and thus increased resistance to nisin.
