    Productive Destruction: Torture, Text, and the Body in the Old English \u27Andreas\u27

    Writing in the Old English Andreas is at once both a productive and a destructive activity. We first become aware of the dangerous power of the written word quite early in the poem, when we learn that the Mermedonians have subverted the normally productive activity of writing into a tool for calculating the execution dates of their prisoners (134-37). Later, the words uttered by the devil to incite the Mermedonians against Andreas illuminate the lexical relationship between the destructive nature of writing and the productive nature of torture in the semiotic context of the poem. Finally, in a sort of double-subversion, these same Mermedonians are the agents by which the destructive practice of torture is itself transformed, as they write upon Andreas\u27s body his identity as a type of Christ. It is precisely this analogous relationship between production and destruction, between inscription and infliction, between the act of writing and that of torture and the transformative powers bound up in each practice which I will explore in this paper, focusing on how Andreas\u27s body ultimately serves as the page upon which this multivalent (and seemingly paradoxical) text is written.     On physical nanoscale aspects of compatibility of steels with hydrogen and natural gas

    The possibilities of effective solutions of relevant technological problems are considered based on the analysis of fundamental physical aspects, elucidation of the nano-structural mechanisms and interrelations of aging and hydrogen embrittlement of materials (steels) in the hydrogen industry and gas-main industries. The adverse effects which these mechanisms and processes have on the service properties and technological lifetime of materials are analyzed. The concomitant fundamental process of formation of carbohydride-like and other segregation nanostructures at dislocations (with the segregation capacity 1 to 1.5 orders of magnitude greater than in the widely used Cottrell 'atmosphere' model) and grain boundaries is discussed in the context of how these nanostructures affect technological processes (aging, hydrogen embrittlement, stress corrosion damage, and failure) and the physicomechanical properties of the metallic materials (including the technological lifetimes of pipeline steels)

    Geologic mapping and interpretation of Landsat TM imagery has filled in a significant gap in the geologic database for southwestern Arizona and southeastern California. The new data acquired, along with interpretation of existing data, forms the basis for a proposed reconstruction of late Tertiary faults in these regions. This reconstruction integrates available geological and geophysical data to define the eastern limit of deformation related to the San Andreas fault, and has significant implications for other recently proposed reconstructions of Tertiary deformation in the region. This progress in interpreting deformation during the last 10 Ma in the region forms a foundation for developing and testing models of older deformation in this region, including the initiation of San Andreas fault system, and the interaction of Early Miocene extension in the Basin and Range with the evolving San Andreas system

    Identification and interpretation of tectonic features from ERTS-1 imagery

    The author has identified the following significant results. The transverse faults observed in the central Coast Ranges of California are believed to represent the remnants of a major system of shear faults older than the San Andreas system. The transverse shear system is believed to have developed in the Mesozoic when the Pacific Plate was advancing under the North American Plate. Shear faults thus developed due to unequal rates of underthrusting. This tectonic model indicates that the intrusive belt of the proto-Sierra Nevada and the belt of eugeosynclinal sedimentary belt (Franciscan group) which lay to the west were both subjected to regional left-handed shear. Later development of the San Andreas system as transform faults of the East Pacific Rise changes the tectonic style to right-lateral tangential. The model explains the peculiar distribution of the Franciscan rocks in the Diablo Range east of the San Andreas fault and in Santa Lucia Range west of Nacimiento fault and the presence of Sierra Nevada type granitic blocks in between the two faults in the Salinia block. This model is also consistent with an analysis of the Texas and Parras shears which indicates that the southwestern part of North America has been subjected to a major left-lateral regional shear before the development of the San Andreas fault system
