The intraday interest rate under a liquidity crisis: the case of August 2007
By analyzing high frequency data for the European interbank market, we show that the intraday interest rate (implicitly defined by the term structure of the ON rate) jumped by more than ten times at the outset of the financial turmoil in August 2007, resulting in an inefficiency of the money market. This took place despite the provision of unlimited free daylight overdrafts by the ECB, on a collateralized basis. We suggest that such result may be attributed to an increase of the liquidity premium and of the cost of collateral.intraday interest rate, liquidity crisis, money market, central banking
The intraday price of money: evidence from the e-MID market
We present a simple model, where intraday and overnight interest rates are linked by a no-arbitrage argument. The hourly interest rate is shown to be a function of the intraday term structure of the overnight rate. This property holds under both assumptions, where an explicit intraday market for interbank loans exists and when it does not. In the first case, such a property is an equilibrium condition; in the second one it holds by definition, as a synthetic hourly loan is a portfolio of overnight contracts. We then provide empirical evidence, based on tick- by-tick data for the e-MID money market (covering the whole 2003). The overnight rate shows a clear downward pattern throughout the operating day. A positive hourly interest rate emerges from the intraday term structure of the overnight rate: we estimate the market price of a one hour interbank loan to be slightly above a half basis point.intraday interest rate, overnight interbank loans, money market.
Is the Leverage of European Commercial Banks Pro-Cyclical?
Detecting whether banks?leverage is indeed procyclical is relevant to support the view that booms and crises may be reinforced by some sort of supply side ?nancial accelerator, whilst ?nding a plausible ex- planation of banks?behaviour is crucial to trace the road for a sensible reform of ?nancial regulation and managers? incentives. The paper shows that procyclical leverage appears to be well entrenched in the behaviour of a sample of major European banks, which are commonly labelled as mainly "commercial banks".Banks, Pro-cyclicality, Financial Regulation.
Health-related quality of life in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome at the transition between adolescence and adulthood
Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a neurodevelopmental
condition characterised by tics and comorbid
behavioural problems, affecting predominantly
male patients. Tic severity typically fluctuates over time,
with a consistent pattern showing improvement after adolescence
in a considerable proportion of patients. Both tics
and behavioural co-morbidities have been shown to have
the potential to affect patients’ health-related quality of life
(HR-QoL) in children and adults with persisting symptoms.
In this study, we present the results of the first investigation
of HR-QoL in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome
at the transition between adolescence and adulthood using
a disease-specific HR-QoL measure, the Gilles de la
Tourette Syndrome-Quality of Life-Children and Adolescents
scale. Our results showed that patients with GTS and
more severe co-morbid anxiety symptoms reported lower
HR-QoL across all domains, highlighting the impact of
anxiety on patient’s well-being at a critical stage of
development. Routine screening for anxiety symptoms is
recommended in all patients with GTS seen at transition
clinics from paediatric to adult care, to implement effective
behavioural and pharmacological interventions as
appropriate
On the worldsheet S matrix of the AdS3/CFT2 mixed-flux mirror model
String on backgrounds are known to be classically
integrable in the presence of a mixture of Ramond-Ramond and
Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz fluxes. It is expected that this results in the
existence of a well-defined factorised worldsheet S matrix. In order to use
integrability to compute the string spectrum we need such a factorised S matrix
to exist also for the "mirror" model, obtained by a double Wick rotation of the
original worldsheet theory. In the mixed-flux case the mirror model has a
complex Hamiltonian, which raises questions on its well-definedness. In the
paper we study the worldsheet tree-level S matrix of the original and mirror
model and discuss some necessary conditions for the integrability and reality
of the spectrum.Comment: 35 pages, references adde
Conformational changes and location of BSA upon immobilization on zeolitic imidazolate frameworks
The location and the conformational changes of proteins/enzymes immobilized within Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are still poorly investigated and understood. Bovine serum albumin (BSA), used as a model protein, was immobilized within two different zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-zni and ZIF-8). Pristine ZIFs and BSA@ZIFs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, micro-FTIR and confocal Raman spectroscopy to characterize MOFs structure and the protein location in the materials. Moreover, the secondary structure and conformation changes of BSA after immobilization on both ZIFs were studied with FTIR. BSA is located both in the inner and on the outer surface of MOFs, forming domains that span from the micro- to the nanoscale. BSA crystallinity (β-sheets + α-helices) increases up to 25 % and 40 % due to immobilization within ZIF-zni and ZIF-8, respectively, with a consequent reduction of β-turns
Self-concept and self-esteem in patients with chronic tic disorders::A systematic literature review
Chronic tic disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by the presence of motor and/or phonic tics and often accompanied by co-morbid behavioral problems. Chronic tic disorders can negatively affect the level of functioning of young patients across social and family domains, with possible repercussions on their self-perception. We conducted a systematic literature review to assess the clinical correlates of both components of self-perception (self-concept, i.e. what patients think about themselves, and self-esteem, i.e. how they feel about their self-concept) in patients with chronic tic disorders. Reported levels of self-perception varied widely across studies, partly due to the methodological heterogeneity of the reviewed literature. Poor self-concept and self-esteem appeared to be more strongly related to the presence of psychiatric co-morbidities (especially obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and anxiety disorders) than to tic severity. Poor peer relationship, social difficulties, as well as problems with parents' acceptance were identified as further risk factors for low self-perception. Finally, the reviewed studies highlighted a link between self-perception and quality of life in patients with chronic tic disorders, alongside the protective role of good social adjustment. This information can therefore assist treating clinicians in the choice of tailored therapeutic interventions for this patient population, including behavioral management techniques that can improve self-concept and self-esteem through increased self-efficacy
