The slow decline of the Galactic recurrent novae T Pyxidis, IM Normae, and CI Aquilae

A distinguishing trait of the three known Galactic recurrent novae with the shortest orbital periods, T Pyx, IM Nor, and CI Aql, is that their optical decline time-scales are significantly longer than those of the other recurrent systems. On the other hand, some estimates of the mass of the ejecta, the velocity of the ejecta, and the duration of the soft X-rays emission of these systems are of the order of those of the other recurrent systems and the fast classical novae. We put forth a tentative explanation of this phenomenon. We propose that in these systems part of the material transferred from the companion during the first few days of the eruption remains within the Roche lobe of the white dwarf, preventing the radiation from ionizing the ejecta of the system and increasing the optical decline time-scale. We explain why this phenomenon is more likely in systems with a high mass transfer rate and a short orbital period. Finally, we present a schematic model that shows that the material transferred from the companion is sufficient to absorb the radiation from the white dwarf in these systems, ultimately supporting this scenario as quantitatively realistic

Simultaneous determination of two unknown thermal coefficients through a mushy zone model with an overspecified convective boundary condition

The simultaneous determination of two unknown thermal coefficients for a semi-infinite material under a phase-change process with a mushy zone according to the Solomon-Wilson-Alexiades model is considered. The material is assumed to be initially liquid at its melting temperature and it is considered that the solidification process begins due to a heat flux imposed at the fixed face. The associated free boundary value problem is overspecified with a convective boundary condition with the aim of the simultaneous determination of the temperature of the solid region, one of the two free boundaries of the mushy zone and two thermal coefficients among the latent heat by unit mass, the thermal conductivity, the mass density, the specific heat and the two coefficients that characterize the mushy zone. The another free boundary of the mushy zone, the bulk temperature and the heat flux and heat transfer coefficients at the fixed face are assumed to be known. According to the choice of the unknown thermal coefficients, fifteen phase-change problems arise. The study of all of them is presented and explicit formulae for the unknowns are given, beside necessary and sufficient conditions on data in order to obtain them. Formulae for the unknown thermal coefficients, with their corresponding restrictions on data, are summarized in a table.Comment: 27 pages, 1 Table, 1 Appendi

The Nonlinear Optical Effects of Opening a Gap in Graphene

Graphene possesses remarkable electronic, optical and mechanical properties that have taken the research of two-dimensional relativistic condensed matter systems to prolific levels. However, the understanding of how its nonlinear optical properties are affected by relativistic-like effects has been broadly uncharted. It has been recently shown that highly-nontrivial currents can be generated in free-standing samples, notably leading to the generation of even harmonics. Since graphene monolayers are centrosymmetric media, for which such harmonic generation is deemed inaccessible, this light-driven phenomenon is both startling and promising. More realistically, graphene samples are often deposited on a dielectric substrate, leading to additional intricate interactions. Here, we present a treatment to study this instance by gapping the spectrum and we show this leads to the appearance of a Berry phase in the carrier dynamics. We analyse the role of such a phase in the generated nonlinear current and conclude that it suppresses odd-harmonic generation. The pump energy can be tuned to the energy gap to yield interference among odd harmonics mediated by interband transitions, allowing even harmonics to be generated. Our results and general methodology pave the way for understanding the role of gap-opening physical factors in the nonlinear optics of hexagonal two-dimensional lattices.Comment: 5 figure

Intrinsic EDMs in microscopic systems at a level of sensitivity achievable in experiments under way or foreseen are predicted in supersymmetric unified theories. I describe this and other sources of measurable EDMs and I show how these sources can be distinguished through experiments in different systems.Comment: 5 pages, LaTex2e using amstex.sty, amssymb.sty, apalike.sty, no figs., to appear in Proceedings of the XXIV ITEP Winter School of Physic

Multiplatform Public Service Broadcasting: The Economic and Cultural Role of UK Digital and TV Independents

In this report, produced as part of a two-year Arts & Humanities Research Council project (AH-H0185622-2) on ‘multiplatform public service broadcasting’, focusing on factual/specialist factual as a case study, we detail the role independent production companies play in PSB. We set out how PSB informs the production cultures of independent companies, the tensions that are experienced between profit and public service and the impact multiplatform commissioning and production practices have had on the sector
