Examining Recent Trends in Poverty, Inequality, and Vulnerability

    Get PDF
Despite the many propoor policies, programs, and projects instituted, the country's gains in the fight against poverty have still been modest. This Note explains why and recommends that a comprehensive roadmap for economic development and poverty reduction based on analysis of historical trends and on a specific identification of goals and targets has to be drawn up.vulnerability, poverty, inequality, poverty reduction, Philippines

Evolutionary Weights for Random Subspace Learning

    Get PDF
Ensemble learning is a widely used technique in Data Mining, this method allows us to aggregate models to reduce prediction error. There are many methods on how to perform model aggregation, one of them is known as Random Subspace Learning, which consists of building subspace of the feature space where we want to create our models. The task of selecting good subspaces and in turn produce good models for better prediction can be a daunting one, so we want to propose a new method to accomplish such a task. This proposed method allows for an automated data-driven way to attribute weights to variables in the feature space in order select variables that show themselves to be important in reducing the prediction error

Infrastructure and FDI Inflows Into Mexico: A Panel Data Approach

    Get PDF
In December 1993, restrictions to foreign ownership across major Mexican economic sectors were abolished. This paper studies output, industrialization intensity, \ international infrastructure\ , and government expenditures on infrastructure as determinants of FDI inflows into Mexican states over 1994-2001. We conduct a \ general to specific\ estimation strategy across Mexican states. Telephone lines appear to be very important to FDI as their coefficients are around 2.0 in Random Effects Models. Industrialization is also important, with coefficients varying from 0.62 to 0.67. Allowing for endogeneity between FDI and real output, dynamic GMM panels confirm the robust effects of telephone lines on FDI. International infrastructure thus appears more conducive to FDI than domestic infrastructure, such as interstate and secondary roads. With international infrastructure being a major catalyst of FDI inflows into Mexico, we provide support to ongoing conventional wisdom promoting such type of investment

COVID-19 e home office: como a pandemia afetou as relações de trabalho e as consequências para a administração

    Get PDF

A residential energy management system with offline population-based optimization

    Get PDF
Expectable improvements in battery technology and lower prices will certainly contribute to increase the interest in residential energy storage systems in the near future. The installment of photovoltaic panels and the use of energy storage systems will help to reduce power losses in distribution and transmission power grid and increase network availability, and consequently, to reduce the dependency on the use of fossil fuels. The paper presents a light implementation of residential energy management system that integrates photovoltaic generation, an energy storage system and an electric vehicle. The goal of the system is to reduce the costs of electric consumer energy bill. The effectiveness of the system is verified through its application in several scenarios for the Portuguese context. An offline population-based algorithm, namely differential evolution method is used to adjust the objective function for the online control of the energy devices in the residential house. The present work has been developed under the EUREKA - ITEA2 Project FUSE-IT (ITEA-13023), Project GREEDI (ANI|P2020 17822), and has received funding from FEDER Funds through COMPETE program and from National Funds through FCT under the project UID/EEA/00760/2013.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Antecedents of innovation in industry: The impact of work environment factors on creative performance

    Get PDF
Purpose – Today, organizations must be able to create innovative strategies, and creative performance depends on knowing what hinders or stimulates creativity. This paper aims to determine which factors in the workplace environment positively or negatively affect creativity by analyzing individuals’ perceptions in a sample of Brazilian industrial companies. Design/methodology/approach – The discussion is based on the componential theory of creativity and the use of a recognized research instrument (KEYS). A regression analysis was carried out, using eight environmental factors related to creativity. The purpose of the collection is to observe the statistical relationships between the scales of the factors and the results related to creativity. Findings – Among the eight factors of the original componential theory, only three were found to have a significant impact on the creative process: organizational incentives, challenging work and support from the work group. Research limitations/implications – The sample in this study was relatively small, and a larger sample will be required to undertake factor analysis. Practical implications – Possible implications for the management of innovation in the Brazilian context are discussed in light of these results. Originality/value – This study contributed to the production of knowledge, still scarce in the country, about the search for creative solutions through the work environment by confirming which factors are significant and determinants of creative performance and challenging factors that had already been proven by other studies in non-Brazilian contexts
