Quantum oscillations and upper critical magnetic field of the iron-based superconductor FeSe

Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations and upper critical magnetic field (H_c2H\_{c2}) of the iron-based superconductor FeSe (T_cT\_c = 8.6 K) have been studied by tunnel diode oscillator-based measurements in magnetic fields of up to 55 T and temperatures down to 1.6 K. Several Fourier components enter the SdH oscillations spectrum with frequencies definitely smaller than predicted by band structure calculations indicating band renormalization and reconstruction of the Fermi surface at low temperature, in line with previous ARPES data. The Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model accounts for the temperature dependence of H_c2H\_{c2} for magnetic field applied both parallel (\textbf{H} \| abab) and perpendicular (\textbf{H} \| cc) to the iron conducting plane, suggesting that one band mainly controls the superconducting properties in magnetic fields despite the multiband nature of the Fermi surface. Whereas Pauli pair breaking is negligible for \textbf{H} \| cc, a Pauli paramagnetic contribution is evidenced for \textbf{H} \| abab with Maki parameter α\alpha = 2.1, corresponding to Pauli field H_PH\_{P} = 36.5

Mapping adolescent health and lifestyles in a multi-state country: methodological aspects and first results

    Get PDF
Summary: Objectives: To explore the feasibility of a geographical analysis (mapping) of data from a national adolescent survey. Methods: Teenagers 15 to 19 years in high school or apprenticeship (N=5275 boys and 3993 girls) answered a self-administered anonymous questionnaire targeting health and lifestyles. Switzerland was divided in 14 subunits, each one including at least 400 subjects: large cantons were isolated by themselves whereas smaller ones were aggregated taking into account common cultural, geographical and health characteristics. To minimise the impact of sample differences across the cantons, subsamples were weighted according to age, sex, and professional background. For each variable, the discretisation of the values in five classes was performed using the threshold approach which maximises intergroup differences and minimises the intragroup differences. Results: The analysis suggests different patterns of distribution depending on the type of variable studied: substance use differs mostly between urban and rural cantons, while mental health differs between French and German-speaking cantons. Conclusions: Whereas most available atlases are derived from population-based data (i.e., mortality rates), this research demonstrates the feasibility of using self-reported data from school-based survey samples. The presentation of data on attractive maps provides a unique opportunity for generating hypotheses as to the causes of differences across cantons in a multi-ethnic, multicultural countr

Reducing the Number of Qubits in Quantum Factoring

This paper focuses on the optimization of the number of logical qubits in Shor\u27s quantum factoring algorithm. As in previous works, we target the implementation of the modular exponentiation, which is the most costly component of the algorithm, both in qubits and operations. In this paper, we show that using only o(n)o(n) work qubits, one can obtain the first bit of the modular exponentiation output. We combine this result with May and Schlieper\u27s truncation technique (ToSC 2022) and the Ekerå-Håstad variant of Shor\u27s algorithm (PQCrypto 2017) to obtain a quantum factoring algorithm requiring only n/2+o(n)n/2 + o(n) qubits in the case of an nn-bit RSA modulus, while current envisioned implementations require about 2n2n qubits. Our algorithm uses a Residue Number System and succeeds with a parametrizable probability. Being completely classical, we have implemented and tested it. Among possible trade-offs, we can reach a gate count O(n3)\mathcal{O}(n^3) for a depth O(n2log3n)\mathcal{O}(n^2 \log^3 n), which then has to be multiplied by O(logn)\mathcal{O}(\log n) (the number of measurement results required by Ekerå-Håstad). Preliminary logical resource estimates suggest that this circuit could be engineered to use less than 1700 qubits and 2362^{36} Toffoli gates, and require 60 independent runs to factor an RSA-2048 instance

Numerical Modeling of Microstructure Formation during Solidification and Heat Treatments of Ni-base superalloys

    No full text
International audienceNumerical models have been developed for the simulation of microstructure formation in Ni-base alloys. The first step consists of a calculation of the segregation of solutal species in the primary solidified g-phase and formation/dissolution of the interdendritic g'-phase. Finally, local compositions of solutal species are used to calculate the nucleation, growth and coarsening of g'-precipitates with a precipitation model

A New Variational Association Process for the Verification of Geometrical Specifications”,

When this new association process of a datum is performed to verify a geometrical specification, measured points are considered as perturbations which generate modifications of the nominal geometry by variation of its location, orientation, and intrinsic dimensional characteristics, without requiring rotation and translation variables as the traditional methods usually do (Bourdet, et al., 1996, Advanced Mathematical Tools in Metrology II, World Scientific) with torsors or matrices. Effect of Training on Primary Care Residents' Performance in Brief Alcohol Intervention: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Get PDF
Background: Brief alcohol interventions (BAI) reduce alcohol use and related problems in primary care patients with hazardous drinking behavior. The effectiveness of teaching BAI on the performance of primary care residents has not been fully evaluated. Methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted with 26 primary care residents who were randomized to either an 8-hour, interactive BAI training workshop (intervention) or a lipid management workshop (control). During the 6-month period after training (i.e., from October 1, 2003 to March 30, 2004), 506 hazardous drinkers were identified in primary care, 260 of whom were included in the study. Patients were interviewed immediately and then 3months after meeting with each resident to evaluate their perceptions of the BAI experience and to document drinking patterns. Results: Patients reported that BAI trained residents: conducted more components of BAI than did controls (2.4 vs 1.5, p = .001); were more likely to explain safe drinking limits (27% vs 10%, p = .001) and provide feedback on patients' alcohol use (33% vs 21%, p = .03); and more often sought patient opinions on drinking limits (19% vs 6%, p = .02). No between-group differences were observed in patient drinking patterns or in use of 9 of the 12 BAI components. Conclusions: The BAI-trained residents did not put a majority of BAI components into practice, thus it is difficult to evaluate the influence of BAI on the reduction of alcohol use among hazardous drinker

Socio-Cultural Perceptions and Representations of Dementia in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo: The EDAC Survey

    Get PDF
Background: Dementia will concern more and more people in the developing countries, but the perception people have of dementia in these areas has not yet been studied. Method: During a general population survey (EDAC) carried out in Brazzaville (Republic of Congo), 27 elderly persons suspected of having dementia and 31 of their relatives, 90 cognitively impaired elderly persons and 92 of their relatives, as well as 33 hospital workers were interviewed according to the Explanatory Model Interview Catalogue. Results: Item prominence ratings indicate that the attention was mainly on the emotional and socio-economic consequences (scores >1.0 out of 5 points). Ageing and mental stress are the main perceived causes. Hospital workers are more aware of public stigma. Conclusion: The socio-cultural components of the dementia phenomenon have to be taken into account to enforce public health and social measures
