BIOMECHANICAL STUDY ON DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS FOR RUNNING JUMPS FOCUSED ON THE TAKEOFF PREPARATION

This study aimed to elucidate the difference in CG parameters from three steps, prejump to takeoff step of the jump motion (running jump), and obtain primary data on takeoff preparation action. Five male jumpers associated with the university track and field department were trained to perform their best at (1) approach run with no takeoff (RUN), (2) jumping as far as possible (long jump [LJ]), and (3) jumping as high as possible (high jump [HJ]), which were recorded using a three-dimensional capture system. As a result, significant differences were observed in not only the takeoff but also the takeoff preparation phase regarding CG parameters, suggesting the need to focus on the takeoff preparation phase as a factor that determines jump direction. Moreover, HJ and LJ suppressed an increase in vertical velocity one step prior, and by takeoff at a lower CG, the athletes allowed for an easier increase in takeoff angle and jump height. However, to resist a decrease in horizontal velocity, LJ transitioned to takeoff in a manner closer to RUN and without changing takeoff preparation as much as that in HJ. Thus, adjusting vertical velocity and height one step before takeoff can influence takeoff angle

First Results of Axion Dark Matter Search with DANCE

Axions are one of the well-motivated candidates for dark matter, originally proposed to solve the strong CP problem in particle physics. Dark matter Axion search with riNg Cavity Experiment (DANCE) is a new experimental project to broadly search for axion dark matter in the mass range of 1017 eV<ma<1011 eV10^{-17}~\mathrm{eV} < m_a < 10^{-11}~\mathrm{eV}. We aim to detect the rotational oscillation of linearly polarized light caused by the axion-photon coupling with a bow-tie cavity. The first results of the prototype experiment, DANCE Act-1, are reported from a 24-hour observation. We found no evidence for axions and set 95% confidence level upper limit on the axion-photon coupling gaγ8×104 GeV1g_{a \gamma} \lesssim 8 \times 10^{-4}~\mathrm{GeV^{-1}} in 1014 eV<ma<1013 eV10^{-14}~\mathrm{eV} < m_a < 10^{-13}~\mathrm{eV}. Although the bound did not exceed the current best limits, this optical cavity experiment is the first demonstration of polarization-based axion dark matter search without any external magnetic field.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

Finding of Probable Tsunami Boulders on Jiupeng Coast in Southeastern Taiwan

We find three coral boulders (approx. 5 m across) resting on the Holocene coral terrace on the Jiupeng coast of southeastern Taiwan. Three exotic corals on the outer part of the boulders are dated at ca. 5000 yr BP which is similar to that of in situ corals composing the Holocene terrace. We interpret that these boulders were broken off from the coral terrace and were transported by tsunami waves, although the timing of the paleotsunami is not determined at this stage

    Endoscopic resection of pleomorphic adenoma

Background : An accessory parotid gland (APG) is a common anatomical structure that occurs in 10%–56% of individuals. Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign tumors of the APG, and their ideal treatment is surgical excision, although there is a risk for aesthetic disorders and facial nerve damage due to the site of origin. Moreover, despite being benign, these tumors are known to recur. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve both reliable excision and avoidance of facial nerve damage. Case presentation : We report a case of a 49-year-old Japanese man with a mass in his left cheek. The lesion was diagnosed as a benign salivary gland tumor derived from the APG by computed tomography imaging, magnetic resonance imaging and fine needle aspiration cytology. We resected the tumor using modified high submandibular incision under the endoscopic-assisted field of view. Discussion and Conclusions : The tumor was less invasive and reliably resected using an endoscope. In surgical treatment, the endoscopic-assisted technique is very useful to achieve complete tumor resection and prevent relapse while avoiding serious complications due to surgical procedures

Clinicopathologic Analysis of Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma, with Focus on Human Papillomavirus Infection Status

Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) can recur; however, the factors related to tumor recurrence remain unclear. This study aimed to analyze risk factors, including human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, as well as other factors associated with SNIP recurrence. Thirty-two patients who were diagnosed with SNIP and underwent surgery between 2010 and 2019 were enrolled: 24 men and 8 women, with a mean age of 59.2 years. The mean follow-up was 57.3 months. Demographics and information about history of smoking, diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, allergic rhinitis, alcohol consumption, tumor stage, surgical approach, and recurrence were reviewed retrospectively. Specimens were investigated using polymerase chain reaction to detect HPV DNA (high-risk subtypes: 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 52b, and 58; low-risk subtypes: 6 and 11). Seven patients (21.9%) experienced recurrence. HPV DNA was detected in five (15.6%) patients (high-risk subtypes, n = 2; low-risk subtypes, n = 3). Patients with recurrence of SNIP had a higher proportion of young adults and displayed higher rates of HPV infection, DM, and advanced tumor stage than those without recurrence. HPV infection, young adulthood, DM, and advanced tumor stage could be associated with a high recurrence rate, which suggests that patients with these risk factors could require close follow-up after surgery
