    Physics of the Pseudogap State: Spin-Charge Locking

    The properties of the pseudogap phase above Tc of the high-Tc cuprate superconductors are described by showing that the Anderson-Nambu SU(2) spinors of an RVB spin gap 'lock' to those of the electron charge system because of the resulting improvement of kinetic energy. This enormously extends the range of the vortex liquid state in these materials. As a result it is not clear that the spinons are ever truly deconfined. A heuristic description of the electrodynamics of this pseudogap-vortex liquid state is proposed.Comment: Submitted to Phys Rev Letter

    Notes on the Brown Widow Spider, Latrodectus Geometricus (Araneae: Theridiidae) in Brazil

    Three species of the cosmopolitan genus Latrodectus were reported by Bucherl (1964) as occurring in Brazil: L. mactans mactans (Fabricius) from Recife, Pernambuco and from P6rto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul; L. curacaviensis (Muller) from the beaches of Guanabara and Bahia; and L. geometricus C. L. Koch from the city of P6rto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul and from the states of Minas Gerais, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. Levi (1959) cited records of L. geometricus from the states of Paraiba, Pernarnbuco, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. In the United States L. geometricus has been reported as an introduced species from both Hawaii (Levi, 1967) and Florida (Levi and Levi, 1968). The present paper contains observations on L. geometricus in the state of Espirito Santo and in the city of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil in 1969 and 1970

    Bose Fluids Above Tc: Incompressible Vortex Fluids and "Supersolidity"

    This paper emphasizes that non-linear rotational or diamagnetic susceptibility is characteristic of Bose fluids above their superfluid Tcs, and for sufficiently slow rotation or weak B-fields amounts to an incompressible response to vorticity. The cause is a missing term in the conventionally accepted model Hamiltonian for quantized vortices in the Bose fluid. The resulting susceptibility can account for recent observations of Chan et al on solid He, and Ong et al on cuprate superconductors

    Due to restrictions within the current architecture of the global observing system (GOS), space-based remote sensing of Earth suffers from an acute data-deficit over the critical polar-regions. Currently, observation of high-latitude regions is conducted using composite images from spacecraft in geostationary (GEO) and low-Earth orbits (LEOs) [1]. However, the oblique viewing geometry from GEO-based systems to latitudes above around 55 deg [2] and the insufficient temporal resolution of spacecraft in LEO means there is currently no source of continuous imagery for polar-regions obtained with a data refresh rate of less than 15 minutes, as is typically available elsewhere for meteorological observations

    Recently it was discovered that the jump in the specific heat at the superconducting transition in pnictide superconductors is proportional to the superconducting transition temperature to the third power, with the superconducting transition temperature varying from 2 to 25 Kelvin including underdoped and overdoped cases. Relying on standard scaling notions for the thermodynamics of strongly interacting quantum critical states, it is pointed out that this behavior is consistent with a normal state that is a quantum critical metal undergoing a pairing instability.Comment: 4 pages 1 figur

    Regulation of television advertising typically covers both the time devoted to commercials and restrictions on the commodities or services that can be publicized to various audiences (stricter laws often apply to children’s programming). Time restrictions (advertising caps) may improve welfare when advertising is overprovided in the market system. Even then, such caps may reduce the diversity of programming by curtailing revenues from programs. They may also decrease program net quality (including the direct benefit to viewers).     Size Gap for Zero Temperature Black Holes in Semiclassical Gravity

    We show that a gap exists in the allowed sizes of all zero temperature static spherically symmetric black holes in semiclassical gravity when only conformally invariant fields are present. The result holds for both charged and uncharged black holes. By size we mean the proper area of the event horizon. The range of sizes that do not occur depends on the numbers and types of quantized fields that are present.     Program for development of strain tolerant thermal barrier coating system

    The results of thermal conductivity, thermal expansion and high cycle fatigue tests conducted on coating systems are presented. These results show that the thermal conductivity of coating system 8 at approximately 982 C (1800 F) is substantially higher than system 3 while no significant differences were observed in the thermal expansion measurements up to approximately 1316 C (2400 F). High cycle fatigue (HCF) testing, which was conducted at room temperature and several stress levels, showed both coatings to be extremely resistant to spallation in HCF
