Spatial and seasonal abundance of sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius) and silver seatrout (C. nothus) off the coast of Texas, determined with twenty years of data (1987–200

Sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius) and silver seatrout (C. nothus) are both found within the immediate offshore areas of the Gulf of Mexico, especially around Texas; however information is limited on how much distributional overlap really occurs between these species. In order to investigate spatial and seasonal differences between species, we analyzed twenty years of bay and offshore trawl data collected by biologists of the Coastal Fisheries Division, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Sand seatrout and silver seatrout were distributed differently among offshore sampling areas, and salinity and water depth appeared to correlate with their distribution. Additionally, within the northernmost sampling area of the gulf waters, water depth correlated significantly with the presence of silver seatrout, which were found at deeper depths than sand seatrout. There was also an overall significant decrease in silver seatrout abundance during the summer season, when temperatures were at their highest, and this decrease may have indicated a migration farther offshore. Sand seatrout abundance had an inverse relationship with salinity and water depth offshore. In addition, sand seatrout abundance was highest in bays with direct passes to the gulf and correlated with corresponding abundance in offshore areas. These data highlight the seasonal and spatial differences in abundance between sand and silver seatrout and relate these differences to the hydrological and geological features found along the Texas coastline

Strange eigenstates and anomalous transport in a Koch fractal with hierarchical interaction

Stationary states of non-interacting electrons on a Koch fractal are investigated within a tight binding approach. It is observed that if a hierarchically long range hopping is allowed, a suitable correlation between the parameters defining the Hamiltonian leads to spectacular changes in the transport properties of finite, but arbitrarily large fractals. Topologically identical structures, that are found to support the same distribution of the amplitudes of eigenstates, are conducting in some cases and insulating in the others, depending on the choice of the hierarchy parameter. The values of the hierarchical parameter themselves display a self-similar, fractal character.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Remote sensing-based actual evapotranspiration assessment in a data-scarce area of Brazil : a case study of the Urucuia Aquifer System

The large groundwater reserves of the Urucuia Aquifer System (UAS) enabled agricultural development and economic growth in the western Bahia State, in northeastern Brazil. Over the last several years, concern has grown around the aquifer’s diminishing water levels, and water balance (WB) studies are in demand. Considering the lack of measured actual evapotranspiration (ETa), a major component of the water cycle, this work uses the Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model to estimate ETa, and compares it to basin-scale estimates from the Soil Moisture Accounting Procedure (SMAP) monthly model and from an annual WB closure method, based on gridded meteorological data and the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) product. Additionally, a comparative assessment of different versions of the SSEBop parameterization was per-formed. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery was used to implement eight different versions of the SSEBop algorithm over the UAS between 2000 and 2013. SSEBop and SMAP ETa yielded similar seasonal patterns, with correlation coefficient (r) up to 0.65, mean difference (MD) of 0.8 mm/month and mean absolute difference (MAD) of 18.5 mm/month. Comparison of SSEBop annual ETa estimates to annual SMAP and WB closure estimates yielded low MD (12.1 and 7.3 mm/year, respectively) and MAD (82.5 and 82.8 mm/year, respectively), but also low r values (0.00 and 0.37, respectively). The comparison of the different SSEBop versions indicated the need to incorporate a calibration step of the aerodynamic heat resistance (rah) parameter. SSEBop results were also used for land cover and drought monitoring. Analysis indicates that agri-culture, associated with an increasing trend of atmospheric evaporative demand, is responsible for the decrease in groundwater levels and streamflow in the studied time period

Conditional and Residual Methods in Scalable Coding for Humans and Machines

We present methods for conditional and residual coding in the context of scalable coding for humans and machines. Our focus is on optimizing the rate-distortion performance of the reconstruction task using the information available in the computer vision task. We include an information analysis of both approaches to provide baselines and also propose an entropy model suitable for conditional coding with increased modelling capacity and similar tractability as previous work. We apply these methods to image reconstruction, using, in one instance, representations created for semantic segmentation on the Cityscapes dataset, and in another instance, representations created for object detection on the COCO dataset. In both experiments, we obtain similar performance between the conditional and residual methods, with the resulting rate-distortion curves contained within our baselines.Comment: IEEE ICME Workshop on Coding for Machines, Brisbane, Australia, 202

The present work consists of evaluating and describing the urban evolution and its impacts in the District of Ribeirão da Ilha, based on the analysis of the changes resulting from the dynamics imposed by public policies and other investments that have provided a high demographic and economic growth in the last decades in the district and especially in the neighborhood of the Carianos, as well as for the municipality as a whole. The methodology will be based on the theoretical reference and bibliographical research, as well as the analysis of aerial images. With the geographic characterization and the study of the occupation from the socio-spatial formation in the district of Ribeirão da Ilha and the Carianos neighborhood, it can be verified how the urban space is used and its current dynamics with the identification of the factors that have modified the space and their relations, in addition to the possibility of expansion areas. Through the geographic analysis, maps are made showing the urban evolution in the space and contextualizing with the historical factors present in the dynamic district of Ribeirão da Ilha and the Carianos neighborhood
