Structure And Function Of The Src Gene Of Rous Sarcoma Virus And The Human Cellular Src Gene
The Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) src gene (v-src) is one of that most extensively studied oncogenes, yet the mechanism by which it transforms virus-infected cells remains unsolved. The study of mutants of RSV provides considerable information on the function of the v-src protein (p60(\u27v-src)).;Characterization of the chicken cellular counterpart of the v-src gene (c-src) has provided clues as to the alterations required to produce an oncogene from a normal cellular gene (proto-oncogene). Characterization of the human c-src gene will be useful for future studies aimed at detecting possible human c-src alterations associated with human neoplastic disorders.;The nucleotide sequence of the 3\u27 three-quarters of a molecularly cloned human c-src gene was determined. This region of the c-src gene encodes the tyrosine kinase domain of p60(\u27c-src) and corresponds to exons 4 through 12 of the chicken c-src gene. Human c-src is very strongly conserved with respect to the chicken c-src gene; 90% nucleotide homology and 98% amino acid homology exists between human and chicken c-src. The exon sizes and the locations of the exon-intron boundaries are identical in human and chicken c-src. Sequences within introns are not conserved, and most of the introns of human c-src are much larger than the corresponding chicken c-src introns.;The strong amino acid conservation of this region of p60(\u27c-src) of species as divergent as humans and chickens suggests that this portion of p60(\u27c-src) specifies one or more functional domains that are of great importance to some aspect of normal cellular growth or differentiation.;The nature of the lesions in three fusiform mutants (WO101, WO201, and tsST529) of the Schmidt-Ruppin strain of RSV was determined by molecular cloning and DNA sequencing. WO101, WO201, and tsST529 all contained an in frame deletion in the v-src region coding for amino acids 116-140 of p60(\u27src). The deleted segment is flanked by consensus splice donor and acceptor sequences and contains an appropriately positioned branchpoint acceptor consensus sequence, suggesting that the deletion occurred through an aberrant RNA splicing event. These results suggest that a protein domain within the N-terminal 1/3 of p60(\u27v-src) is important for controlling morphological parameters of transformation in RSV-infected cells
Mechanisms underlying the diminished sensitivity to prolactin negative feedback during lactation: Reduced STAT5 signaling and up-regulation of cytokine-inducible SH2 domain-containing protein (CIS) expression in tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic neurons
Hyperprolactinaemia during lactation is a consequence of the sucking stimulus and in part due to reduced prolactin (PRL) negative feedback. To date, the mechanisms involved in this diminished sensitivity to PRL feedback are unknown but may involve changes in PRL signal transduction within tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic (TIDA) neurons. Therefore, we investigated signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) 5 signaling in the TIDA neurons of lactating rats. Dual-label confocal immunofluorescence studies were used to determine the intracellular distribution of STAT5 within TIDA neurons in the dorsomedial arcuate nucleus. In lactating rats with pups removed for 16 h, injection of ovine PRL significantly (P < 0.05) increased the STAT5 nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio compared with vehicle-treated mothers. In contrast, ovine PRL injection did not increase the STAT5 nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio in lactating mothers with pups, demonstrating that PRL signal transduction through STAT5 is reduced in TIDA neurons in the presence of pups. To investigate possible mechanisms involved in reduced PRL signaling, we examined the expression of suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins. Northern analysis on whole hypothalamus showed that CIS (cytokine-inducible SH2 domain-containing protein), but not SOCS1 or SOCS3, mRNA expression was significantly (P < 0.01) up-regulated in suckled lactating rats. Semiquantitative RT-PCR on arcuate nucleus micropunches also showed up-regulation of CIS transcripts. Immunofluorescence studies demonstrated that CIS is expressed in all TIDA neurons in the dorsomedial arcuate nucleus, and the intensity of CIS staining in these neurons is significantly (P < 0.05) increased in lactating rats with sucking pups. Together, these results support the hypothesis that loss of sensitivity to PRL-negative feedback during lactation is a result of increased CIS expression in TIDA neurons
Colors of 2625 Quasars at 0<z<5 Measured in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Photometric System
We present an empirical investigation of the colors of quasars in the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometric system. The sample studied includes 2625
quasars with SDSS photometry. The quasars are distributed in a 2.5 degree wide
stripe centered on the Celestial Equator covering square degrees.
Positions and SDSS magnitudes are given for the 898 quasars known prior to SDSS
spectroscopic commissioning. New SDSS quasars represent an increase of over
200% in the number of known quasars in this area of the sky. The ensemble
average of the observed colors of quasars in the SDSS passbands are well
represented by a power-law continuum with (). However, the contributions of the bump
and other strong emission lines have a significant effect upon the colors. The
color-redshift relation exhibits considerable structure, which may be of use in
determining photometric redshifts for quasars. The range of colors can be
accounted for by a range in the optical spectral index with a distribution
(95% confidence), but there is a red tail in the
distribution. This tail may be a sign of internal reddening. Finally, we show
that there is a continuum of properties between quasars and Seyfert galaxies
and we test the validity of the traditional division between the two classes of

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Catalog IV. Fifth Data Release
We present the fourth edition of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar
Catalog. The catalog contains 77,429 objects; this is an increase of over
30,000 entries since the previous edition. The catalog consists of the objects
in the SDSS Fifth Data Release that have luminosities larger than M_i = -22.0
(in a cosmology with H_0 = 70 km/s/Mpc, Omega_M = 0.3, and Omega_Lambda = 0.7)
have at least one emission line with FWHM larger than 1000 km/s, or have
interesting/complex absorption features, are fainter than i=15.0, and have
highly reliable redshifts. The area covered by the catalog is 5740 sq. deg. The
quasar redshifts range from 0.08 to 5.41, with a median value of 1.48; the
catalog includes 891 quasars at redshifts greater than four, of which 36 are at
redshifts greater than five. Approximately half of the catalog quasars have i <
19; nearly all have i < 21. For each object the catalog presents positions
accurate to better than 0.2 arcsec. rms per coordinate, five-band (ugriz)
CCD-based photometry with typical accuracy of 0.03 mag, and information on the
morphology and selection method. The catalog also contains basic radio,
near-infrared, and X-ray emission properties of the quasars, when available,
from other large-area surveys. The calibrated digital spectra cover the
wavelength region 3800--9200A at a spectral resolution of ~2000. The spectra
can be retrieved from the public database using the information provided in the
catalog. The average SDSS colors of quasars as a function of redshift, derived
from the catalog entries, are presented in tabular form. Approximately 96% of

An Initial Survey of White Dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
An initial assessment is made of white dwarf and hot subdwarf stars observed
in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In a small area of sky (190 square degrees),
observed much like the full survey will be, 269 white dwarfs and 56 hot
subdwarfs are identified spectroscopically where only 44 white dwarfs and 5 hot
subdwarfs were known previously. Most are ordinary DA (hydrogen atmosphere) and
DB (helium) types. In addition, in the full survey to date, a number of WDs
have been found with uncommon spectral types. Among these are blue DQ stars
displaying lines of atomic carbon; red DQ stars showing molecular bands of C_2
with a wide variety of strengths; DZ stars where Ca and occasionally Mg, Na,
and/or Fe lines are detected; and magnetic WDs with a wide range of magnetic
field strengths in DA, DB, DQ, and (probably) DZ spectral types. Photometry
alone allows identification of stars hotter than 12000 K, and the density of
these stars for 15<g<20 is found to be ~2.2 deg^{-2} at Galactic latitudes
29-62 deg. Spectra are obtained for roughly half of these hot stars. The
spectra show that, for 15<g<17, 40% of hot stars are WDs and the fraction of

Galaxy Clustering in Early SDSS Redshift Data
We present the first measurements of clustering in the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (SDSS) galaxy redshift survey. Our sample consists of 29,300 galaxies
with redshifts 5,700 km/s < cz < 39,000 km/s, distributed in several long but
narrow (2.5-5 degree) segments, covering 690 square degrees. For the full,
flux-limited sample, the redshift-space correlation length is approximately 8
Mpc/h. The two-dimensional correlation function \xi(r_p,\pi) shows clear
signatures of both the small-scale, ``fingers-of-God'' distortion caused by
velocity dispersions in collapsed objects and the large-scale compression
caused by coherent flows, though the latter cannot be measured with high
precision in the present sample. The inferred real-space correlation function
is well described by a power law, \xi(r)=(r/6.1+/-0.2 Mpc/h)^{-1.75+/-0.03},
for 0.1 Mpc/h < r < 16 Mpc/h. The galaxy pairwise velocity dispersion is
\sigma_{12} ~ 600+/-100 km/s for projected separations 0.15 Mpc/h < r_p < 5
Mpc/h. When we divide the sample by color, the red galaxies exhibit a stronger
and steeper real-space correlation function and a higher pairwise velocity
dispersion than do the blue galaxies. The relative behavior of subsamples
defined by high/low profile concentration or high/low surface brightness is
qualitatively similar to that of the red/blue subsamples. Our most striking
result is a clear measurement of scale-independent luminosity bias at r < 10
Mpc/h: subsamples with absolute magnitude ranges centered on M_*-1.5, M_*, and
M_*+1.5 have real-space correlation functions that are parallel power laws of
slope ~ -1.8 with correlation lengths of approximately 7.4 Mpc/h, 6.3 Mpc/h,

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Catalog I. Early Data Release
We present the first edition of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar
Catalog. The catalog consists of the 3814 objects (3000 discovered by the SDSS)
in the initial SDSS public data release that have at least one emission line
with a full width at half maximum larger than 1000 km/s, luminosities brighter
than M_i^* = -23, and highly reliable redshifts. The area covered by the
catalog is 494 square degrees; the majority of the objects were found in SDSS
commissioning data using a multicolor selection technique. The quasar redshifts
range from 0.15 to 5.03. For each object the catalog presents positions
accurate to better than 0.2" rms per coordinate, five band (ugriz) CCD-based
photometry with typical accuracy of 0.05 mag, radio and X-ray emission
properties, and information on the morphology and selection method. Calibrated
spectra of all objects in the catalog, covering the wavelength region 3800 to
9200 Angstroms at a spectral resolution of 1800-2100, are also available. Since
the quasars were selected during the commissioning period, a time when the
quasar selection algorithm was undergoing frequent revisions, the sample is not

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Catalog V. Seventh Data Release
We present the fifth edition of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar
Catalog, which is based upon the SDSS Seventh Data Release. The catalog, which
contains 105,783 spectroscopically confirmed quasars, represents the conclusion
of the SDSS-I and SDSS-II quasar survey. The catalog consists of the SDSS
objects that have luminosities larger than M_i = -22.0 (in a cosmology with H_0
= 70 km/s/Mpc Omega_M = 0.3, and Omega_Lambda = 0.7) have at least one emission
line with FWHM larger than 1000 km/s or have interesting/complex absorption
features, are fainter than i > 15.0 and have highly reliable redshifts. The
catalog covers an area of 9380 deg^2. The quasar redshifts range from 0.065 to
5.46, with a median value of 1.49; the catalog includes 1248 quasars at
redshifts greater than four, of which 56 are at redshifts greater than five.
The catalog contains 9210 quasars with i < 18; slightly over half of the
entries have i< 19. For each object the catalog presents positions accurate to
better than 0.1" rms per coordinate, five-band (ugriz) CCD-based photometry
with typical accuracy of 0.03 mag, and information on the morphology and
selection method. The catalog also contains radio, near-infrared, and X-ray
emission properties of the quasars, when available, from other large-area
surveys. The calibrated digital spectra cover the wavelength region 3800-9200
Ang. at a spectral resolution R = 2000 the spectra can be retrieved from the
SDSS public database using the information provided in the catalog. Over 96% of
the objects in the catalog were discovered by the SDSS. We also include a
supplemental list of an additional 207 quasars with SDSS spectra whose archive

Cosmological parameter analysis including SDSS Lyα forest and galaxy bias:constraints on the primordial spectrum of fluctuations, neutrino mass, and dark energy
We combine the constraints from the recent Lyα forest analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the SDSS galaxy bias analysis with previous constraints from SDSS galaxy clustering, the latest supernovae, and 1st year WMAP cosmic microwave background anisotropies. We find significant improvements on all of the cosmological parameters compared to previous constraints, which highlights the importance of combining Lyα forest constraints with other probes. Combining WMAP and the Lyα forest we find for the primordial slope n_s=0.98±0.02. We see no evidence of running, dn/dlnk=-0.003±0.010, a factor of 3 improvement over previous constraints. We also find no evidence of tensors, r<0.36 (95% c.l.). Inflationary models predict the absence of running and many among them satisfy these constraints, particularly negative curvature models such as those based on spontaneous symmetry breaking. A positive correlation between tensors and primordial slope disfavors chaotic inflation-type models with steep slopes: while the V∝ϕ^2 model is within the 2-sigma contour, V∝ϕ^4 is outside the 3-sigma contour. For the amplitude we find σ_8=0.90±0.03 from the Lyα forest and WMAP alone. We find no evidence of neutrino mass: for the case of 3 massive neutrino families with an inflationary prior, ∑m_ν<0.42 eV and the mass of lightest neutrino is m_1<0.13 eV at 95% c.l. For the 3 massless +1 massive neutrino case we find m_ν<0.79 eV for the massive neutrino, excluding at 95% c.l. all neutrino mass solutions compatible with the LSND results. We explore dark energy constraints in models with a fairly general time dependence of dark energy equation of state, finding Ω_λ=0.72±0.02, w(z=0.3)=-0.98_-0.12^+0.10, the latter changing to w(z=0.3)=-0.92_-0.10^+0.09 if tensors are allowed. We find no evidence for variation of the equation of state with redshift, w(z=1)=-1.03_-0.28^+0.21. These results rely on the current understanding of the Lyα forest and other probes, which need to be explored further both observationally and theoretically, but extensive tests reveal no evidence of inconsistency among different data sets used here
The First Hour of Extra-galactic Data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectroscopic Commissioning: The Coma Cluster
On 26 May 1999, one of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) fiber-fed
spectrographs saw astronomical first light. This was followed by the first
spectroscopic commissioning run during the dark period of June 1999. We present
here the first hour of extra-galactic spectroscopy taken during these early
commissioning stages: an observation of the Coma cluster of galaxies. Our data
samples the Southern part of this cluster, out to a radius of 1.5degrees and
thus fully covers the NGC 4839 group. We outline in this paper the main
characteristics of the SDSS spectroscopic systems and provide redshifts and
spectral classifications for 196 Coma galaxies, of which 45 redshifts are new.
For the 151 galaxies in common with the literature, we find excellent agreement
between our redshift determinations and the published values. As part of our
analysis, we have investigated four different spectral classification
algorithms: spectral line strengths, a principal component decomposition, a
wavelet analysis and the fitting of spectral synthesis models to the data. We
find that a significant fraction (25%) of our observed Coma galaxies show signs
of recent star-formation activity and that the velocity dispersion of these
active galaxies (emission-line and post-starburst galaxies) is 30% larger than
the absorption-line galaxies. We also find no active galaxies within the
central (projected) 200 h-1 Kpc of the cluster. The spatial distribution of our
Coma active galaxies is consistent with that found at higher redshift for the
CNOC1 cluster survey. Beyond the core region, the fraction of bright active
galaxies appears to rise slowly out to the virial radius and are randomly
distributed within the cluster with no apparent correlation with the potential
