Integrating Brain and Biomechanical ModelsâA New Paradigm for Understanding Neuro-muscular Control
To date, realistic models of how the central nervous system governs behavior have been restricted in scope to the brain, brainstem or spinal column, as if these existed as disembodied organs. Further, the model is often exercised in relation to an in vivo physiological experiment with input comprising an impulse, a periodic signal or constant activation, and output as a pattern of neural activity in one or more neural populations. Any link to behavior is inferred only indirectly via these activity patterns. We argue that to discover the principles of operation of neural systems, it is necessary to express their behavior in terms of physical movements of a realistic motor system, and to supply inputs that mimic sensory experience. To do this with confidence, we must connect our brain models to neuro-muscular models and provide relevant visual and proprioceptive feedback signals, thereby closing the loop of the simulation. This paper describes an effort to develop just such an integrated brain and biomechanical system using a number of pre-existing models. It describes a model of the saccadic oculomotor system incorporating a neuromuscular model of the eye and its six extraocular muscles. The position of the eye determines how illumination of a retinotopic input population projects information about the location of a saccade target into the system. A pre-existing saccadic burst generator model was incorporated into the system, which generated motoneuron activity patterns suitable for driving the biomechanical eye. The model was demonstrated to make accurate saccades to a target luminance under a set of environmental constraints. Challenges encountered in the development of this model showed the importance of this integrated modeling approach. Thus, we exposed shortcomings in individual model components which were only apparent when these were supplied with the more plausible inputs available in a closed loop design. Consequently we were able to suggest missing functionality which the system would require to reproduce more realistic behavior. The construction of such closed-loop animal models constitutes a new paradigm of computational neurobehavior and promises a more thoroughgoing approach to our understanding of the brainâs function as a controller for movement and behavior
Computational system identification of continuous-time nonlinear systems using approximate Bayesian computation
In this paper, we derive a system identification framework for continuous-time nonlinear systems, for the first time using a simulation-focused computational Bayesian approach. Simulation approaches to nonlinear system identification have been shown to outperform regression methods under certain conditions, such as non-persistently exciting inputs and fast-sampling. We use the approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) algorithm to perform simulation-based inference of model parameters. The framework has the following main advantages: (1) parameter distributions are intrinsically generated, giving the user a clear description of uncertainty, (2) the simulation approach avoids the difficult problem of estimating signal derivatives as is common with other continuous-time methods, and (3) as noted above, the simulation approach improves identification under conditions of non-persistently exciting inputs and fast-sampling. Term selection is performed by judging parameter significance using parameter distributions that are intrinsically generated as part of the ABC procedure. The results from a numerical example demonstrate that the method performs well in noisy scenarios, especially in comparison to competing techniques that rely on signal derivative estimation
Should NICE reconsider the 2016 UK guidelines on TB contact tracing? A cost-effectiveness analysis of contact investigations in London.
BACKGROUND: In January 2016, clinical TB guidance in the UK changed to no longer recommend screening contacts of non-pulmonary, non-laryngeal (ETB) index cases. However, no new evidence was cited for this change, and there is evidence that screening these contacts may be worthwhile. The objective of this study was to estimate the cost-effectiveness of screening contacts of adult ETB cases and adult pulmonary or laryngeal TB (PTB) cases in London, UK. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional analysis of data collected on TB index cases and contacts in the London TB register and an economic evaluation using a static model describing contact tracing outcomes. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated using no screening as the baseline comparator. All adult TB cases (â„15 years old) in London from 2012 to 2015, and their contacts, were eligible (2465/5084 PTB and 2559/6090 ETB index cases were included). RESULTS: Assuming each contact with PTB infects one person/month, the ICER of screening contacts of ETB cases was ÂŁ78 000/quality-adjusted life-years (QALY) (95%âCI 39â000 to 140â000), and screening contacts of PTB cases was ÂŁ30 000/QALY (95%âCI 18â000 to 50 000). The ICER of screening contacts of ETB cases was ÂŁ30 000/QALY if each contact with PTB infects 3.4 people/month. Limitations of this study include the use of self-reported symptomatic periods and lack of knowledge about onward transmission from PTB contacts. CONCLUSIONS: Screening contacts of ETB cases in London was almost certainly not cost-effective at any conventional willingness-to-pay threshold in England, supporting recent changes to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence national guidelines
Einstein gravity as a 3D conformally invariant theory
We give an alternative description of the physical content of general
relativity that does not require a Lorentz invariant spacetime. Instead, we
find that gravity admits a dual description in terms of a theory where local
size is irrelevant. The dual theory is invariant under foliation preserving
3-diffeomorphisms and 3D conformal transformations that preserve the 3-volume
(for the spatially compact case). Locally, this symmetry is identical to that
of Horava-Lifshitz gravity in the high energy limit but our theory is
equivalent to Einstein gravity. Specifically, we find that the solutions of
general relativity, in a gauge where the spatial hypersurfaces have constant
mean extrinsic curvature, can be mapped to solutions of a particular gauge
fixing of the dual theory. Moreover, this duality is not accidental. We provide
a general geometric picture for our procedure that allows us to trade foliation
invariance for conformal invariance. The dual theory provides a new proposal

Robot Phonotaxis with Dynamic Sound-source Localization
Abstract-We address two key goals pertaining to autonomous mobile robots: one, to develop fast accurate sensory capabilities -at present, the localization of sound sources -and second, the integration of such sensory modules with other robot functions, especially its motor control and navigation. A primary motivation for this work was to devise effective means to guide robotic navigation in environments with acoustic sources. We recently designed and built a biomimetic sound-source localization apparatus. In contrast to the popular use of time-of-arrival differences in free field microphone arrays, our system is based on the principles observed in nature, where directional acoustic sensing evolved to rely on diffraction about the head with only two ears. In this paper we present an integrated robot phonotaxis system which utilizes the robot's movement to resolve fronthack localization ambiguity. Our system achieves high angular localization acuity ( & Z 0 ) and it was successfully tested in localizing a single broadband source and moving towards it within a cluttered laboratory environment
The impact of coronary perforation in percutaneous interventions involving the left main stem coronary artery in the United Kingdom 2007-2014: Insights from the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society database
Background
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is increasingly utilized for treatment of coronary disease involving the unprotected left main stem (ULMS). However, no studies to date have examined the outcomes of such interventions when complicated by coronary perforation (CP).
Methods
Using the British Cardiovascular Intervention society (BCIS) database, data were analyzed on all ULMSâPCI procedures complicated by CP in England and Wales between 2007 and 2014. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify predictors of ULMS CP and to evaluate the association between this complication and outcomes.
Results
During 10,373 ULMSâPCI procedures, CP occurred more frequently than in nonâULMSâPCI (0.9 vs. 0.4%, pâ<â.001) with a stable annual incidence. Covariates associated with CP included number of stents used, female gender, use of rotational atherectomy and chronic total occlusion (CTO) intervention. Adjusted odds of adverse outcomes for ULMSâPCI complicated by CP were higher for periâprocedural complications including cardiogenic shock, tamponade, sideâbranch loss, DC cardioversion, inâhospital major bleeding, transfusion requirement, and periâprocedural myocardial infarction. There were also significantly increased odds for inâhospital major adverse cardiac events (MACCE, OR 8.961, 95% CI [4.902â16.383]) and 30âday mortality (OR 5.301, 95% CI [2.741â10.251]).
Conclusions
CP is an infrequent event during ULMSâPCI and is predicted by female gender, rotational atherectomy, CTO interventions or number of stents used. CP was associated with significantly higher odds of mortality and morbidity, but at rates similar to previously published allâcomer PCI complicated by CP
Cataclysmic Variables from SDSS II. The Second Year
The first full year of operation following the commissioning year of the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey has revealed a wide variety of newly discovered
cataclysmic variables. We show the SDSS spectra of forty-two cataclysmic
variables observed in 2002, of which thirty-five are new classifications, four
are known dwarf novae (CT Hya, RZ Leo, T Leo and BZ UMa), one is a known CV
identified from a previous quasar survey (Aqr1) and two are known ROSAT or
FIRST discovered CVs (RX J09445+0357, FIRST J102347.6+003841). The SDSS
positions, colors and spectra of all forty-two systems are presented. In
addition, the results of follow-up studies of several of these objects identify
the orbital periods, velocity curves and polarization that provide the system
geometry and accretion properties. While most of the SDSS discovered systems
are faint (>18th mag) with low accretion rates (as implied from their spectral
characteristics), there are also a few bright objects which may have escaped
