    In evaluating current or proposed commercial transport airplanes, there has not been available a ready means to determine weights so as to compare airplanes within this particular class. This paper describes the development of and presents such comparative tools. The major design characteristics of current American jet transport airplanes were collected, and these data were correlated by means of regression analysis to develop weight relationships for these airplanes as functions of their operational requirements. The characteristics for 23 airplanes were assembled and examined in terms of the effects of the number of people carried, the cargo load, and the operating range. These airplane characteristics were correlated for the airplanes as one of three subclasses, namely the small, twin-engine jet transport, the conventional three- and four-engine jets, and the new wide-body jets

    In situ imaging of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates

    Laboratory observations of vortex dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are essential for determination of many aspects of superfluid dynamics in these systems. We present a novel application of dark-field imaging that enables \texttt{\it in situ} detection of two-dimensional vortex distributions in single-component BECs, a step towards real-time measurements of complex two-dimensional vortex dynamics within a single BEC. By rotating a 87^{87}Rb BEC in a magnetic trap, we generate a triangular lattice of vortex cores in the BEC, with core diameters on the order of 400 nm and cores separated by approximately 9 ÎĽ\mum. We have experimentally confirmed that the positions of the vortex cores can be determined without the need for ballistic expansion of the BEC.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    This report covers tests of a 5-foot model of the NACA 66,2-420 low-drag airfoil at high speeds including the critical compressibility speed. Section coefficients of lift, drag, and pitching moment, and extensive pressure-distribution data are presented. The section drag coefficient at the design lift coefficient of 0.4 increased from 0.0042 at low speeds to 0.0052 at a Mach number of 0.56 (390 mph at 25,000 ft altitude). The critical Mach number was about 0.60. The results cover a Reynold number range from 4 millions to 17 millions

    Leadership quality and follower affect - A study of U.S. presidential candidates: Working paper series--07-02

    Using data from the seven most recent US presidential elections, two related analyses are conducted. The first presents an analysis of variance comparing Democratic and Republican Party candidates who were successful in securing votes to those who were unsuccessful in securing votes, using follower perceptions of candidate intelligence, candidate's degree of charisma, and follower feelings of positive and negative affect toward these candidates as the units for analysis. Here, perceived intelligence, feelings of pride and hope, as well as feelings of fear and anger, were found to be statistically different between the two groups. Specifically, candidates perceived to be higher in intelligence, who generated stronger feelings of pride and hope, and weaker feelings of fear and anger were more likely to receive voting support from their followers. The second analysis presents a regression model using follower assessments of candidates' leadership quality as dependent upon certain leader perceptual traits, including follower assessments of candidate intelligence and inspirational qualities, as well as follower affective responses (in terms of feelings of pride, hope, fear and anger) toward all candidates. Here, candidates perceived to be higher in intelligence, perceived to possess stronger degrees of inspirational quality, and who were judged more "likeable" in terms of generating stronger degrees of positive follower affect and lower degrees of negative follower affect are considered better quality leaders

    On March 19, 2011, the discipline of cell biology lost a creative force with the passing of Richard G.W. Anderson, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. An unabashed chauvinist for cell biology, Dick served for many years on the editorial board of The Journal of Cell Biology and the Council of the American Society for Cell Biology. He died of glioblastoma multiforme six days before his 71st birthday
