    Performance deterioration: An airline perspective

    Get PDF
Certain features of engine design and installation are clearly demonstrating important advantages in engine performance retention. Bearing arrangement no doubt has an important role in performance retention. Four bearings seem to be insufficient while six are probably more than are required. A well designed five-bearing system would seem to be an optimum configuration. Bearings with over-hung components such as fans, should be designed to minimize such over-hang to limit associated wobble, which in turn leads to shroud rub, or to allow closer running clearances. Almost any effort to improve stiffness and generally reduce flexing of the engine structure will pay off significantly in performance retention, even at a weight penalty. For this reason cowl load sharing to provide additional rigidity at a low cost in additional weight and complexity is favored

    Market competition and auditor independence

In the past two years, Australia and other jurisdictions have again witnessed a series of unsignalled corporate collapses. As with previous generations of corporate collapse several have been associated with questionable accounting policies and concerns with auditing quality. With the decomposition of the former global auditing firm once known as Arthur Andersen, the implications for the accounting profession are seen as more serious than ever before

Comments on a review of “Ants and plants”

The book, Ants and Plants, so severely attacked in a review by Alan N. Andersen in 1996 (Australia Journal of Entomology, vol. 35, p. 200), was applauded, in it\u27s French version, by another Australian, Prof. R. C. Buckley, in Science. The famous English ant specialist, Barry Bolton, also praised the book in his Identification guide to the ant genera of the World (1994). The text of both the French and English versions is the same, except the English version included many new hosts plants from Central America and Southeast Asia

ĹŚba Minako the Raconteur: Refashioning a Yamauba Tale

Ōba Minako (1930–2007) was captivated by the imaginative world of the mukashi-banashi (folktales) and otogi-banashi (fairy tales) of Japan and also by classical Western fairy tales, especially those by the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. This lifelong fascination helped shape her writing, which often defies conventional categorization. To show how these classical tales and the modern world are seamlessly woven together in Ōba’s consciousness as a feminist sociocultural raconteur, I begin by examining her subversive retelling of Japan’s oldest literary fairy tale, “Taketori monogatari” (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter), before focusing on one of her most thought-provoking modern fairy tales: “Yamauba no bishō” (The Smile of a Mountain Witch). In this allegorical tale the eponymous yamauba (mountain witch) is transported into a modern patriarchal society with all its inherent trials and tribulations

A theoretical study of transition probabilities and lifetimes for the Sn III: core polarization effects

Data on atomic properties are not only relevant to spectroscopy, but these values are of interest in a variety of other fields in physics and technology. In this work we present a completer study of Sn III transition probabilities and lifetimes of spectral lines arising from 4d105sns (n=6-9) and 4d105snp (n=5-6) configurations These values were obtained in intermediate coupling (IC) and using relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations including core-polarization effects following the suggestions of Migdalek et al. [1]. We use for the IC calculations the standard method of least square fitting from experimental energy levels by means of Cowan [2] computer code. For the calculations we used all the experimental levels present in the Moore table. Transition probabilities and lifetimes are generally in good agreement with the experimental data [3, 4, 5]. In the next Table we present some values as example

Coding of the Reach Vector in Parietal Area 5d

Competing models of sensorimotor computation predict different topological constraints in the brain. Some models propose population coding of particular reference frames in anatomically distinct nodes, whereas others require no such dedicated subpopulations and instead predict that regions will simultaneously code in multiple, intermediate, reference frames. Current empirical evidence is conflicting, partly due to difficulties involved in identifying underlying reference frames. Here, we independently varied the locations of hand, gaze, and target over many positions while recording from the dorsal aspect of parietal area 5. We find that the target is represented in a predominantly hand-centered reference frame here, contrasting with the relative code seen in dorsal premotor cortex and the mostly gaze-centered reference frame in the parietal reach region. This supports the hypothesis that different nodes of the sensorimotor circuit contain distinct and systematic representations, and this constrains the types of computational model that are neurobiologically relevant
