Global or local solidarity? That's the wrong question: relationality, aspiration and the in-between of feminist activism in Southeast Asia

Global solidarity has increasingly been criticized, particularly in postcolonial-feminist theory. Mohanty exposed 'global' sisterhood as a shallow cosmopolitan category based on white/Western feminist experiences that is in danger of erasing difference. Building on her critique, scholars have criticized feminist solidarity across difference itself, preferring ‘local’ activism. Taking seriously the critique of cosmopolitanism advanced by post-colonial feminists, this article investigates how solidarity projects could reach across difference without undermining it. I argue that sharp dichotomies (global/local; general/particular) are unhelpful, because solidarity is a process that sits uneasily between them. Drawing on interviews with the World March of Women in Indonesia and the Philippines, I show that solidarity across difference is possible because their analysis and practice is both: place-based and situated, as well as aspiring to the generalization of solidarity. The global in that way ceases to be a descriptive category and becomes a normative horizon for collective aspiration

Totalsynthese von Belizentrin Methylester

Die Synthese von Naturstoffen ist seit fast 200 Jahren eine Kerndisziplin der organischen Chemie. Dabei bieten komplexe natürliche Moleküle immer neue Herausforderungen für Chemiker und verlangen dadurch neue Lösungen. Besonders marine (Mikro-)Organismen haben sich als eine ergiebige Quelle verschiedenster chemisch wie auch biologisch interessanter Naturstoffe erwiesen. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt hauptsächlich die Totalsynthese von Belizentrin Methylester. Die Stammverbindung Belizentrin wurde 2014 aus dem Dinoflagellaten Prorocentrum belizeanum isoliert. Schon während der Isolierung hat sich diese Verbindung als sehr instabil gezeigt, was sich auch im Lauf unseres Syntheseprojektes bestätigte. Im Zuge dessen fanden wir aber auch, dass der entsprechende Methylester noch immer empfindlich, aber ausreichend stabil ist. Schließlich gelang eine sehr konvergente Totalsynthese dieser Verbindung. Diese Synthese wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Dr. Sylvester Größl durchgeführt, der die polyhydroxyierte Seitenkette hergestellt hat. Seine Beiträge sind an den entsprechenden Stellen gekennzeichnet. Die Schlüsselschritte in der Synthese des makrozyklischen Teiles des Moleküls waren zwei Palladium-katalysierte Kreuzkupplungen um drei Fragmente zu verbinden, gefolgt von der intramolekularen Aminolyse eines Spirolactons um den Makrolactam-Ring zu schließen. Anschließend wurden Makrozyklus und Seitenkette nach wenigen Schutzgruppen- und Redox- Manipulationen durch eine E-selektive Julia-Kocienski Olefinierung zusammen gefügt. Globale Entschützung lieferte schließlich den zuvor genannten Belizentrin Methylester

Entwicklung als Motiv für Herrschaft und Widerstand: Kohärenz und Fragmentierung während des Zivilgesellschaftsforums der Weltbankgruppe

Der Artikel zeichnet unterschiedliche Aneignungen des Entwicklungsmotivs nach. Aufbauend auf den vielfältigen Kritiken von "Entwicklung" und den Aufrufen, das Motiv zugunsten emanzipativerer Projekte abzuschreiben, zeigt der Artikel empirisch, dass sich einflussreiche KritikerInnen der Weltwirtschaftsinstitutionen noch immer des Motivs der Entwicklung bedienen. Um das emanzipative Potenzial einer solchen Aneignung auszuloten, dokumentiert der Artikel ethnografisch das Zusammenreffen "herrschaftlichen" und "widerständigen" In-Szene-Setzens des Entwicklungsmotivs. Hierfür dient eine teilnehmende Beobachtung beim Zivilgesellschaftsforum der Weltbankgruppe und des Internationalen Währungsfonds im Jahr 2016. Es wird argumentiert, dass sich ein herrschaftliches In-Szene-Setzen von Entwicklung durch die Projektion von Kohärenz auszeichnet, die "eine Welt" durch einen Entwicklungspfad verbessert und dadurch normalisiert. Widerständige Aneignung von Entwicklung zeigt sich im Angriff auf diese projizierte Kohärenz. Empirisch zeigt sich, dass diese widerständige Aneignung unter erheblich höherem Rechtfertigungsdruck steht und die widerständigen Akteure sich im Verlauf der Auseinandersetzung fragmentieren. Die kohärente, herrschaftsstabilisierende Grammatik der Institutionen löst einen Sog des Universellen aus, der moderate Teile des Widerstands inkorporiert und so die Bewegung spaltet.This article reconstructs dominant and resistant appropriations of the theme of development. Departing from the various critiques of "development" and the calls for its death, the paper argues that influential critics of world economic organizations still use the theme of development in their advocacy. In order to assess this appropriation of development, the article ethnographically traces the encounter between dominant and resistant ways of staging development. Based on participant observation at the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund’s Annual Meeting in 2016, the paper argues that the dominant staging of development is characterised by a projection of global coherence: "One World" shall be enhanced by one path to development. Resistant appropriations of development attack this projection of coherence. Empirically, the article shows that the resistant staging of development requires much greater justification and that the resistant actors, in effect, becoming fragmented into different camps. The coherent, stabilizing grammar of the institutions is characterised by universalism, which incorporates moderate parts of the resistance into its logic, and, hence, fragments the resistant movement

A Novel Class of Defensive Compounds in Harvestmen: Hydroxy-γ-Lactones from the Phalangiid Egaenus convexus

When threatened, the harvestman Egaenus convexus (Opiliones: Phalangiidae) ejects a secretion against offenders. The secretion originates from large prosomal scent glands and is mainly composed of two isomers of 4-hydroxy-5-octyl-4,5-dihydro-3H-furan-2-one (1), a β-hydroxy-γ-lactone. The compounds were characterized by GC-MS of their microreaction derivatives, HRMS, and NMR. After the synthesis of all four possible stereoisomers of 1, followed by their separation by chiral-phase GC, the absolute configurations of the lactones in the Egaenus secretion was found to be (4S,5R)-1 (90%) and (4S,5S)-1 (10%). In dieser Rezension argumentiere ich, dass das Lehrbuch von BENNETT und CHECKEL in mindestens vier Aspekten außerordentlich wertvoll ist: Erstens liefern die Herausgeber bezüglich der Komposition ein Modell dafür, wie ein Sammelband aussehen sollte: Miteinander verbundene Artikel beziehen sich aufeinander, bauen aufeinander auf und streiten mit dem theoretischen Rahmen der Herausgeber. Diese wiederum nehmen die Beiträge in ihrer Schlussfolgerung ernst. Zweitens ist der Band voll mit Beispielen aus der Forschungspraxis. Diese werden nicht nur genannt, sondern in allen Kapiteln ausführlich diskutiert und bezüglich ihres methodologischen Potenzials evaluiert. Obwohl das Lehrbuch die Prozessanalyse verbessern und popularisieren soll, zögern die Herausgeber, drittens, nicht davor zurück, die potenziellen Schwächen des Ansatzes zu besprechen. Viertens kombiniert und überbrückt das Buch verschiedene (zumeist) qualitative Methoden und bewerkstelligt es trotzdem, abstrakte und einfach zugängliche Standards für "gutes" Process Tracing bereitzustellen. Aus diesen Gründen ist es ein Muss für Forschende, die mit qualitativen Methoden arbeiten. Nichtsdestotrotz können BENNETT und CHECKEL ihr Versprechen, positivistische und interpretative Verfahren zusammenzuführen, nicht vollständig halten. Während Letztere zwar in Betracht gezogen werden, lassen die Herausgeber ihr generelles Forschungsprogramm davon relativ unberührt. Dementsprechend kann das Buch insbesondere für Forschende aus dem positivistischen Lager als "How-to"-Guide herhalten, um Forschung zu designen und umzusetzen. Fourth, the book combines and bridges various approaches to (mostly) qualitative methods and still manages to provide abstract and easily accessible standards for making "good" process tracing. As such, it is a must-read for scholars working with qualitative methods. However, BENNETT and CHECKEL struggle with fulfilling their promise of bridging positivist and interpretive approaches, for while they do indeed take the latter into account, their general research framework remains largely unchanged by these considerations. On these grounds, I argue that, especially for scholars in the positivist camp, the book can function as a "how-to" guide for designing and implementing research.
