    Background choice and immobility as context dependent tadpole responses to perceived predation risk

    The association of immobility and camouflage is widespread as a defensive mechanism in prey from varied taxa. However, many experiments assessing the reaction of prey to predator cues are conducted under artificial laboratory conditions. In a previous experiment we observed the tadpoles of Ololygon machadoi (Hylidae) to respond to predator visual and/or chemical cues by choosing backgrounds that improve their disruptive properties, but detected no associated reduction of movement. Here we experimentally demonstrate this response in the species’ natural habitat, on backgrounds where the tadpoles are likely to achieve their best camouflage. We also tested whether previous experiences could influence both background choice and immobility in O. machadoi tadpoles. These novel experimental results suggest that a defensive behavior—i.e., reduction of movement—in these tadpoles is more strongly expressed under the natural conditions where they evolved, compared to laboratory conditions where prey and predator were brought into closer contact. Besides, previous experiences are likely to play an important role in expressed defensive responses

    Identification of low frequency anti-erythrocyte antibodies in chronically transfused patient with beta-thalassemia: a case report

    The rate of erythrocyte alloimmunization in tranfusion-dependent patients can reach 50%, although the frequency of clinically relevant antibodies in transfused patients is not fully known, it is estimated that about 1% of patients are sensitized to each unit of transfused RBCs. The aim of this study is to report the case of  an 11-year-old girl with ?-thalassemia major, chronically transfused, which was detected in pre-transfusion protocol, the presence of two rare anti-erythrocyte antibodies: anti-Colton b (anti-Cob) and anti-Lutheran 14 (anti-Lu14). To survey the clinical and laboratory patient history, research records filed in the archives of the university hospital in which the patient is monitored system was performed. The phenotyping erythrocyte in multitransfused patients is essential to decrease the risk of complications due to alloimmunization and estimate the availability of compatible blood. Thus, the report of this case may contribute to increase knowledge about of the real frequency of uncommon anti-erythrocyte antibodies in thalassemic patients.</p

    Study of the incidence of intestinal parasites in vegetables commercializes in free trade fair and supermarket Londrina

    The objective of this study was to determine the presence of intestinal parasites in samples of lettuce and chicory sold in street market and supermarket Londrina city, Paraná. For this purpose, eight samples of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and eight samples of chicory (Cichorium intybus) were collected and analyzed. The analysis was performed at the Laboratory for Extension and Research in Enteroparasitosis – L.E.P.En. Cysts of Endolimax nana, Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba histolytica, Balantidium coli and Strongyloides stercoralis larvae, Hookworm larvae and eggs, and eggs of Ascaris spp were found in the samples. These results demonstrate the need for hygienic-sanitary measures, aimed at educating the community, enabling the improvement in living conditions of the population

    Variação morfométrica de Tivela mactroides (Bivalvia, Veneridae) no litoral Norte-Nordeste do Brasil

    O presente estudo objetivou comparar a morfometria de Tivela mactroides de três praias do litoral Norte e Nordeste brasileiro. Para tanto, utilizou-se exemplares depositados na Coleção Malacológica do Museu de Zoologia da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (MZUFRA), oriundos das praias da Corvina (PA), Boa Viagem (PE) e Porto da Barra (BA). Para a comparação morfológica, primeiramente calculou-se razões proporcionais entre as medidas externas das conchas (comprimento, largura e altura), em seguida, efetuou-se Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP) com a finalidade de determinar a razão morfométrica, determinante para organização dos dados e, por fim, utilizou-se a Análise de Variância &nbsp;(ANOVA) para comparar a morfometria de T. mactroides das três localidades. A ACP determinou a razão altura/comprimento como principal variável, enquanto a ANOVA indicou diferenças na morfometria da concha na comparação entre as três localidades. Assim, os resultados deste estudo corroboram a hipótese de influência latitudinal na morfometria da concha de T. mactroides. Conclui-se que há presença de influência latitudinal nas características conquiliológicas de T. mactroides presentes em diferentes regiões da costa brasileira. Deste modo, recomenda-se análises da influência latitudinal na dinâmica populacional da espécie

    Trends in antimicrobial resistance among clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus in a university hospital of the north of Paraná from 2002 through 2011

    Staphylococcus aureus are pathogens with high incidence of nosocomial infections and community and has great ability to acquire resistance. The objective of this study was to determine susceptibility to antimicrobial profiles of S. aureus isolated in Londrina University Hospital, from January 2002 through December 2011. The retrospective analysis of 3,494 S. aureus performed from a database of Clinical Laboratory Microbiology HU sector. Antibiotic resistance was judged according to the criteria recommended by the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute. The highest percentages of resistance was founding to erythromycin (49.4%), clindamycin and oxacillin (41.8%) and ciprofloxacin (36.5%). In addition, there was a significant reduction in gentamicin resistance rates, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazol. All strains studied were susceptible to linezolid. We found that 40% showed reduced susceptibility to vancomycin. These data indicate a possible change in the epidemiology of S. aureus in our region, which can bring impact on the treatment and control of infection by this agent

    NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

    Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restriction for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of the information used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data
