A Machine Learning App for Monitoring Physical Therapy at Home
Shoulder rehabilitation is a process that requires physical therapy sessions to recover the
mobility of the affected limbs. However, these sessions are often limited by the availability and
cost of specialized technicians, as well as the patient’s travel to the session locations. This paper
presents a novel smartphone-based approach using a pose estimation algorithm to evaluate the
quality of the movements and provide feedback, allowing patients to perform autonomous recovery
sessions. This paper reviews the state of the art in wearable devices and camera-based systems for
human body detection and rehabilitation support and describes the system developed, which uses
MediaPipe to extract the coordinates of 33 key points on the patient’s body and compares them with
reference videos made by professional physiotherapists using cosine similarity and dynamic time
warping. This paper also presents a clinical study that uses QTM, an optoelectronic system for motion
capture, to validate the methods used by the smartphone application. The results show that there are
statistically significant differences between the three methods for different exercises, highlighting
the importance of selecting an appropriate method for specific exercises. This paper discusses the
implications and limitations of the findings and suggests directions for future research.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Quantification of GHB and GHB-GLUC in an 1,4-butanediol intoxication: a case report
Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is an endogenous compound with known action at the neural level. Its psychoactive effects led to an illicit use context including recreational purposes, muscle building effects in bodybuilders and drug-facilitated crimes, specifically in sexual assaults. Besides the misuse of the main compound, there are precursors like Gammabutyrolactone (GBL) and 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BD), usually non controlled substances, becoming a much easier way to obtain the target-compound. The authors present the first reported intoxication case in Portugal with 1,4-Butanediol, including the quantification of GHB and GHB-GLUC in serum, by GC-MS/MS TQD. A suspicious liquid and a serum sample were sent by an hospital ER and analysed by GC-MS-single quadrupole and GC-MS/MS TQD, respectively. A methodology including protein precipitation and GC-MS/MS TQD analysis was used to detect and quantify GHB and GHB-GLUC in serum. Toxicological analysis revealed the presence of 1,4-Butanediol in the liquid and GHB [171 mg/L] and GHB-GLUC [13,7 mg/L] in serum. The victim reverted the coma with no neurological sequelae. This was the first detected case, in Portugal, with 1,4-Butanediol, suggesting that it is important to be aware that consumers have different options to obtain illicit compounds, such as GHB. On the other hand, GHB-GLUC was identified and quantified for the first time in a real case, due to intoxication. This case highlights the importance of analysing all samples for active compounds, precursors and metabolites that can lead to the main intoxication origin.publishe
Cashew nuts (Anacardium occidentale L.) decrease visceral fat, yet augment glucose in dyslipidemic rats
The objective of this study was to evaluate the biological effects of roasted Cashew nuts consumption on biochemical and murinometric parameters in dyslipidemic rats receiving lipid supplementation. Young male rats were randomly assigned to three experimental groups (n = 10). The Control group (CONT) was treated with water, the Dyslipidemic group (DL) received a high fat content emulsion throughout the experiment, and the Dyslipidemic Cashew Nuts group (DLCN) received the same high fat content emulsion throughout the experiment, yet was treated with Cashew nuts. Body parameters, biochemical, hepatic and fecal fatty acid profiles were all evaluated. The levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides were higher in the DL and DLCN groups as compared to the control group. DLCN and CONT presented no difference in HDL levels. DLCN presented higher glycemia levels than the other groups. There was reduction of body fat in DLCN as compared to other groups, but with higher accumulations of liver fat. DLCN presented a reduction in saturated hepatic fatty acids of 20.8%, and an increase of 177% in relation to CONT; there was also a 21% in increase DL for ω9 fatty acids in comparison to CONT. As for fecal fatty acids, there was a lower concentration of polysaturates in DLCN as compared to the other groups. The data showed that the consumption of Cashew nuts by the dyslipidemic animals treated with a hyperlipidic diet induced greater accumulations of liver fat and worsened glycemic levels, despite having reduced visceral fats and increased fecal fat excretion.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Synthesis, Characterization and Photophysical Properties of Eu 3+ Doped in BaMoO 4
and 4 Eu 3+ transitions at 523, 533, 554, 578, 589, 614, 652 and 699 nm, respectively. The emission spectra of the powders heat-treated at 800 and 900°C showed a marked increase in its intensities compared to the materials heattreated from 400 to 700°C. The decay times for the sample were evaluated and all of them presented the average value of 0.61 ms. Eu 3+ luminescence decay time follows one exponential curve indicating the presence of only one type of Eu 3+ symmetry site
Low frequency of TERT promoter mutations in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs).
Somatic mutations in the promoter region of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene, mainly at positions c. − 124 and
c. − 146 bp, are frequent in several human cancers; yet its presence in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) has not been
reported to date. Herein, we searched for the presence and clinicopathological association of TERT promoter mutations in
genomic DNA from 130 bona fide GISTs. We found TERT promoter mutations in 3.8% (5/130) of GISTs. The c. − 124C4T
mutation was the most common event, present in 2.3% (3/130), and the c. − 146C4T mutation in 1.5% (2/130) of GISTs.
No significant association was observed between TERT promoter mutation and patient’s clinicopathological features. The present
study establishes the low frequency (4%) of TERT promoter mutations in GISTs. Further studies are required to confirm our
findings and to elucidate the hypothetical biological and clinical impact of TERT promoter mutation in GIST pathogenesis. This project was partially supported by Barretos Cancer Hospital internal
