    Get PDF
A joint effort by the Bureau of Justice Statistics and National Center for Education Statistics, this annual report examines crime occurring in schools and colleges. This report presents data on crime at school from the perspectives of students, teachers, principals, and the general population from an array of sources--the National Crime Victimization Survey, the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the School Survey on Crime and Safety, the School and Staffing Survey and the Campus Safety and Security Survey

The Status of Table Mountain Pine (\u3cem\u3ePinus pungens\u3c/em\u3e) Stands on the Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee

Table Mountain pine (Pinus pungens Lamb.)(TMP) is a threatened species, endemic to the southern Appalachian Mountains. The status of TMP following the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman) outbreak of 1999ā€“2001 is unknown. This study focuses on stands of the Cherokee National Forest (CNF) in eastern Tennessee that had a TMP component in the 1994 Continuous Inventory of Stand Condition (CISC) data. This project has two parts: an inventory of the 1994 stands as well as a case study of cost comparison of release treatments for a young overstocked stand. The objective of the inventory was to visit the TMP stands designated in the 1994 CISC data on the CNF to determine whether these stands still contain a significant component of TMP and to document the present stand condition and successional status. The objective of the case study was to produce a cost analysis/comparison of releasing young TMP that are in the stem exclusion stage of stand development by several silvicultural methods: strip thinning, crop tree release, and prescribed burning. TMP is declining across the CNF with less that 900 acres dominated by the species. TMP was a major component on more than 7400 acres from the 1994 data, but many have also succeeded to hardwoods because of the absence of fire and SPB infestations. Management actions should be taken to maintain the health of remaining TMP stands on the CNF. Reintroduction of a controlled burning regime to create seedbed conditions favorable to TMP regeneration and to control hardwoods in existing stands is suggested. If TMP is to remain in Southern Appalachian ecosystems, more direct, cost-effective, and positive management approaches are necessary. Initial cost effectiveness of release treatments were analyzed. Regardless of treatment, costs ranged from 18to18 to 45 per acre. In this study, prescribed burning, generally considered more cost effective than mechanical treatments, was most expensive because of the small tract size and the labor involved to monitor the burn. The crop tree release treatment had the least cost because small trees were cut and cost of equipment is minima

The Relationship Between Motivation, Academic Achievement, and Engagement in Mathematics Using Digital Game-Based Learning: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Study

    Get PDF
Digital game-based learning (DGBL) has unique factors that can engage students in the learning process. It has been shown that incorporating DGBL into mathematics can help bridge the learning gap, differentiate instruction, and engage students (Yang et al., 2018; Hulse et al., 2019; Chen et al., 2012; Naik, 2017). This study examined how studentsā€™ prior engagements are related to their academic achievement as well as investigated studentsā€™ motivation while utilizing DGBL in mathematics. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was utilized to collect the quantitative data followed by the qualitative data. There were eighteen middle school participants in grades six through eight who all attended the same school within the Northeastern United States. The self-determination theory (SDT) served as the theoretical framework for examining the results. Data was collected through a pretest, posttest, an open-ended survey, and a closed-ended survey. The results of this study indicated that DGBL can improve academic achievement in mathematics. However, it was determined that studentsā€™ prior engagement was not related to their academic achievement. Additional research should be conducted on the motivational aspect of relatedness and DGBL since it was shown that there was a strong correlation between relatedness and the engagement themes of learning with peers and experiences with faculty

Gait and Functional Training for a Patient Post-Stroke with a History of Substance Abuse and Psychiatric Disorders: A Case Report

    Get PDF
The opioid crisis is the largest drug epidemic in recorded history, resulting in over 500,000 deaths between the years of 2000 and 2015. The abuse of and addiction to opioids are serious global health problems that affect the social and economic well-being of all societies. Drug abusers have a 6.5 times increased risk of stroke. Strokes contribute to the disability and morbidity associated with drug abuse. Drug abuse is a frequent cause of stroke in areas with a high prevalence of comorbidity between drug abuse disorders and mental illness. The purpose of this case study was to outline physical therapy (PT) rehabilitation that utilized task-oriented and gait training in an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) to address gait and functional mobility in a patient following a stroke combined with both substance abuse and psychiatric disorders.https://dune.une.edu/pt_studcrposter/1120/thumbnail.jp

The Role of Parents in Problematic Internet Use Among US Adolescents

    Get PDF
The internet has transformed the way youth communicate, learn, and network, with implications for their broader social, psychological, and physical health and well-being. With the technological capability of accessing the internet from anywhere, at any time, paired with the enormous variety of internet activities in which youth engageā€”from social networking to chatting to streaming videos to playing games to watching television contentā€”instances of problematic internet behavior have emerged. We conducted an online national survey of 629 US adolescents ages 12ā€“17 years old and a matching survey of one of their parents. We investigated the relationship between problematic internet behavior and parental monitoring, parental mediation of internet use, and parental estimates of their adolescentā€™s time spent using computers. Analyses showed that problematic internet use was associated with less parental monitoring and parental mediation and poorer parental relationships. Adolescents that spent a lot of time on the computer were also more likely to engage in problematic internet use. Although we cannot determine the direction of the relationships, results support the important role of parents in adolescentsā€™ problematic internet use

Research-to-Practice Brief: Using Labor Market Projections for Successful Transition Planning

    Get PDF
Employment rates and post-school transition outcomes for individuals with disabilities remain alarmingly low compared to peers without disabilities. Transition plans often focus on skills associated with employment opportunities that are immediately available to the individual with a disability. We contend that transition plans must be developed with specific attention to projected labor market needs to ensure that we are preparing students with disabilities for long-term success. This research brief describes how the results of an in-depth labor market analysis can be used to develop strong transition plans that prepare students for careers that will last far into the future
