    An Appraisal of the Universal Basic Education in Nigeria

    The Universal Basic Education (UBE) Programme could not have been introduced at a better time than now that the nation is in dire need of all round National Development. The major objective of the UBE programme is the provision of free, universal and compulsory basic education for every Nigerian child aged 6-15 years. However, for the Universal Basic Education programme to be truly free and universal, efforts must be made to check those factors that are known to have hindered the success of such programmes in the past. This paper specifically considered the implementation of Universal Basic Education (UBE) so far its success and problems. Relevant recommendations are therefore proffered

    Creating Employment via Small and Medium Scale Enterprises: The Case of Nigeria

    Nigeria is abundantly blessed with all manners of resources but the problem has always been that of mismanagement of these resources. Consequently, the country is facing lots of socio-economic and political problems among which is unemployment. Given the absence of an enabling environment for large scale industrialization, the only way out is by creating employment through Small and Medium Scale Enterprises as in the case of other developing nations. Overall, the Small and Medium Enterprises have been found to be a veritable source of employment generation. However, the accompanying increase in productivity is not commensurate with the level of employment generated. This paper discussed among others the concept of SMEs, a comparative study of SMEs in other countries And the problems and prospects of SMEs in Nigeria. The paper concluded by Proffering ‘solutions to SMEs’ problems through appropriate recommendations. It is hoped that with present administration’s quest to improve the economy by rigorously pursuing its eight-point-agenda to logical conclusions, the micro finance institutions all over the country are made to grant loan capital to small scale entrepreneurs without stringent conditions, more ventures would open up while poverty and the unemployment level will reduce considerably

    Availability and Utilization of ICT Resources in Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools in Ardo-Kola and Jalingo, Taraba State

    This paper is a survey which was designed to ascertain the various Information and Communication technology resources available for teaching and learning in  the Secondary Schools in the two local government areas in Ardo kola and Jalingo Taraba state  The population of the study is made up of all the. secondary school teachers and principals in all the forty Secondary Schools in A sample she of 264 respondents was selected for the study using stratified - random sampling technique. The instrument used for the collection of data was a set of researcher—made questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using frequency counts and simple percentage it  shows that the extent of availability of ICT resources in secondary schools in Ardokola and Jalingo is very low. The extent of utilization of ICT resources in teaching and learning is equally very low. ICT resources were not available in the schools for the use of teachers and students for learning activities. It was also found out that many factors were perceived by the teachers and principals as constraints to the effective utilization of ICTs in teaching and learning in secondary schools. They include; poor power supply. Lack of adequately trained teachers in the use of lCTs in teaching, high cost of computers and accessories among others. It was concluded that much has not been done by government in the area of provision of ICT resources for teaching and learning in this era of ICT based learning. The paper recommends governments’, non-governmental organizations’ and private individuals’ intervention in the provision of needed ICT resources in the schools among others

    Women over the years have been faced with the problem of marginalization in virtually all human endeavors This male chauvinism and gender inequality in our society in the name of culture have done more harm than good to the economy d socio-political development of the country as women entrepreneurship is greatly ‘‘hampered in this respect most especially in the formal sector This paper therefore examined the level of women participation entrepreneurship which include among others, finance, limited mobility, family ties, education and risk bearing abilities The paper is of the opinion that development cannot be fully realized Nigeria if women who constitute almost half of the population are not being carried along and suggested that women should be treated as specific target group in all development programs and that government should create enabling environment that will promote entrepreneurship development among women by discouraging all forms of discrimination against them for their potentials to be fully harnessed for national development

    The need for reform in the education sector in Nigeria is inevitable judging from the decline in the standard of educational. Therefore, educational reform towards national development is that education that should make Nigeria grow larger, more mature and organized. To achieve this set target, the author is of the opinion that vocational education as an instrument for self-actualization and development is strategically significant. There could be other areas where this could be achieved but the focus of the writers is centred on art.Different area to achieve this are discussed, their impediments and solutions and recommendation proffered Education is a commonly used term which has various meanings to various people; yet it is a very important concept to the society. Therefore, education cannot be definite as it means different things to different people depending on their perception of what it is. Education can simply mean “knowledge”“enlightenment” or “wisdom”. So, education is the process of transmitting social lore, values and desirable attitudes from one generation to another: Education seeks to socialize individuals so as to equip them with the desired mode of behavior that is in conformity with the way of life of the society in which they live. It is the process of teaching, training and learning in schools and college for the development of knowledge and skills so as to prepare individuals’ to live happily with themselves and others in the society where they live.Mill (1931) state that education includes “whatever we do for ourselves and whatever is done for us by others for the express purpose of bringing us nearer to the perfection of our nature.     Cognition of Entrepreneurial Education Among Mall and Medium Scale Initiative Owners in Jalingo Etropolis, Taraba State, Nigeria

    The study examined the perception of entrepreneurial education among Small and Medium scale enterprise owners in Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study. The population comprised of One Hundred and Twenty (120) registered small and medium scale enterprise under the National Association of Small Scale Industries (NASSI) and Taraba State Chamber of Commercial Industries and Agriculture (TACCIMA) who are entrepreneurs and beneficiaries of credit and loan scheme in study area. Sample size of One Hundred (100) respondents was drawn using stratified sampling technique. Data was collected from respondents using structured questionnaire and hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using Chi-square (X2). The results of the findings revealed that, the X2 — calculated (X2c = 181.7) is greater than the X2c tabulated (X2c = 40.1) which rejected null hypothesis and concluded that entrepreneurial education has significant influence in preparing small and medium scale enterprise owners to be enterprising individuals which contributes to the economic development of Nigeria. The study recommended that, the transformation of entrepreneurial education should start from primary through secondary and tertiary levels of educations emphasizing, the cultural orientation and focus on technological studies through all the stages and that the Government should create an environment where exchange of business ideas is easier among SMEs owner
