    Indonesian Teachers Beliefs on the Gap between Educational Research and Practice

    Teachers\u27 beliefs towards educational research has become one significant factor in explaining the gap between research and practice. The present study aimed at reviewing the scale to measure teachers\u27 beliefs about the causes and problems related to research-based practices, describing beliefs that teachers appear to hold, and examining its relation to their demographic characteristics. The study involved 466 in-service teachers in Jakarta Province. The study employed the 24-item scale developed by Broekkamp and van Hout-Wolters (2007). The study indicated that 20 out of 24 items of the scale were valid and reliable to measure the teachers’ beliefs. The scale consisted of two factors, namely, causes pertaining to research and causes pertaining to the use of research. The study also showed that most of participants tend to hold negative beliefs, especially pertaining to the use of research. There was significant difference in beliefs related to teaching experience

    The GPI Anchor Signal Sequence Dictates the Folding and Functionality of the Als5 Adhesin from Candida albicans

    Background: Proteins destined to be Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored are translocated into the ER lumen completely before the C-terminal GPI anchor attachment signal sequence (SS) is removed by the GPI-transamidase and replaced by a pre-formed GPI anchor precursor. Does the SS have a role in dictating the conformation and function of the protein as well? Methodology/Principal Findings: We generated two variants of the Als5 protein without and with the SS in order to address the above question. Using a combination of biochemical and biophysical techniques, we show that in the case of Als5, an adhesin of C. albicans, the C-terminal deletion of 20 amino acids (SS) results in a significant alteration in conformation and function of the mature protein. Conclusions/Significance: We propose that the locking of the conformation of the precursor protein in an alternate conformation from that of the mature protein is one probable strategy employed by the cell to control the behaviour an

    Crossmodal Transfer of Object Information in Human Echolocation

    In active echolocation, reflections from self-generated acoustic pulses are used to represent the external environment. This ability has been described in some blind humans to aid in navigation and obstacle perception[1-4]. Echoic object representation has been described in echolocating bats and dolphins[5,6], but most prior work in humans has focused on navigation or other basic spatial tasks[4,7,8]. Thus, the nature of echoic object information received by human practitioners remains poorly understood. In two match-to-sample experiments, we tested the ability of five experienced blind echolocators to identify objects haptically which they had previously sampled only echoically. In each trial, a target object was presented on a platform and subjects sampled it using echolocation clicks. The target object was then removed and re-presented along with a distractor object. Only tactile sampling was allowed in identifying the target. Subjects were able to identify targets at greater than chance levels among both common household objects (p < .001) and novel objects constructed from plastic blocks (p = .018). While overall accuracy was indicative of high task difficulty, our results suggest that objects sampled by echolocation are recognizable by shape, and that this representation is available across sensory modalities

    We present the results from comprehensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of ordering kinetics in d = 2 liquid crystals (LCs). Our LC system is described by the two-component Lebwohl-Lasher model with long-ranged interactions, V(r) ∼ r -n . We find that systems with n≥2n \geq 2 show the same dynamical behavior as the nearest-neighbor case (n = ∞ . This contradicts available theoretical predictions

    Ordering dynamics of nematic liquid crystals: Monte Carlo simulations

    We present comprehensive results from Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of ordering dynamics in d = 2 nematic liquid crystals. We compare our MC results with an analytic form obtained for the correlation function of the liquid crystal order parameter. The numerical and analytical results are in excellent agreement. The domain growth law is consistent with L(t) ~ (t/ln t)<sup>1/2</sup>

    Dissociating Parallel and Serial Processing of Numerical Value

    Digits serve as useful tools for studying the interaction between low-level perceptual representations and higher-level semantic information, and also the degree to which processing these stimulus attributes relies on similar or different mechanisms. Following a body of literature that debates the influence of high-level, semantic information on perceptual processing, and work by Van Opstal and colleagues (2011) investigating whether subliminally presented digit arrays affect estimates of numerical averages, here we explored the temporal dynamics of extracting numerical values associated with each digit in an array. Specifically, we examined reaction times (RTs) for estimating the average of digit arrays of varying sizes to determine whether numerical meaning is extracted in parallel, or instead may require serial processing of individual digits. In Experiment 1, participants completed a numerical mean estimation task, along with visual search tasks designed to yield RT patterns across increasing display sizes thought to be characteristic of serial and parallel processes. In Experiment 2, we controlled for brightness cues that could have contributed to performance in Experiment 1. In both experiments, comparing RT patterns for the numerical averaging tasks to those of the search tasks suggested that semantic information from multiple digits may be extracted by a parallel processing mechanism. Unlike in either search task, RTs improved with increasing display size, indicating a potential benefit of larger displays as has been reported for extracting ensemble, or summary statistical representations of lower-level visual information
