Performance differentials of agglomeration and strategic groups: a test of incubation and new venture strategy

    Get PDF
Our paper investigates how nascent firms ‘performance is affected by strategic group membership and industrial agglomeration. Agglomeration is defined using geographical concentration while strategic groups are measured as incubated firms that belong to the industry most highly represented within an incubator. Results reveal that incubated firms in counties with higher levels of agglomeration experience a lower hazard of exit. Similarly, incubated firms that belong to a strategic group have a lower hazard of exit. However, the combined effects of agglomeration and strategic group membership based on a three-way interaction between incubation, agglomeration, and strategic group membership leads to an increased hazard of exit

A Dynamic Analysis of Household Decision-Making: The Mexican Case

In this paper we analyze the evolution of family structure, human capital accumulation and returns, labor force participation and household consumption and savings decisions for Mexican households. We use as theoretical framework the Life Cycle Model. Our analysis is based on a synthetic panel technique as proposed by Browning, Deaton and Irish (1985) that allows us to track the average behavior of cohorts over successive surveys. Mexico went through important demographic and socioeconomic changes between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s, simultaneously with the government`s implementation of different policies as well as some institutional changes, including an important birth control program and the expansion of educational opportunities. A reduction in fertility and an increase in the schooling of women are observed simultaneously with an increase in women`s labor force participation. Most of this process is dominated by age and cohort effects. In terms of consumption-saving decisions, we find that this reduction in the number of children and the increase in women`s labor force participation, reinforced by higher investment in education and higher rate of returns, have been correlated with higher saving rates for younger cohorts, particularly those where the head has higher educational levels.

Overcoming mental-health stigmas in Latinx communities

    Reimagine 2021

United Way of Santa Cruz has been a resource for the community for many years. Sadly, after the pandemic hit, it caused many financial hardships for the nonprofit organization. There is a lack of economic support for nonprofits all over the US that could be heard around the world. United Way exists to be able to support those in need, but at this moment they cannot provide that support without help. This is due to several reasons including high rates of unemployment, decreased spending during the pandemic, and reduced person-to-person contact with potential donors. All these factors contribute to the lack of financial support which could lead to devastating consequences, including a decrease in funding for programs, reduced staffing, and even possible closure for some nonprofits. Therefore, a fundraising event was the most fitting project idea. Reimagine 2021 Campaign Kickoff was a fundraiser that could help the organization raise money to help fund their youth programs. United Way hosted their event in mid-October, and it was successful although it wasn\u27t in the ways they expected. It\u27s important to be able to pivot in any unforeseen situation to make a negative into a positive in a short period of time

Fostering Latinx/e students’ familial capital in the Spanish Heritage Language Program at the University of XXXX

In this presentation, I show how we (director and instructors) have fostered Latinx/e students’ familial capital in the Spanish Heritage Language Program at the University of XXX. Familial capital recognizes the nurtured relationship students have with their immediate and extended family members and communities. This capital also includes the lessons students learned on caring, coping, emotional, moral, and educational consciousness from their family members. Additionally, this capital pulls from the research of Vélez-Ibáñez and Greenberg (1992) on Funds of Knowledge that points out that Mexican-Americans learn valuable lessons from their family and community that have been passed down across generations. In the SHL classroom context, familial capital focuses on creating relationships of care among students and educators. This includes building a sense of community in and outside the classroom and developing a mentorship relationship between the students and educator. This is possible by explicitly implementing Latinx/e community cultural wealth in the SHL curricula

ADVANCES IN SEQUENTIAL DATA ASSIMILATION AND NUMERICAL WEATHER FORECASTING: AN ENSEMBLE TRANSFORM KALMAN-BUCY FILTER, A STUDY ON CLUSTERING IN DETERMINISTIC ENSEMBLE SQUARE ROOT FILTERS, AND A TEST OF A NEW TIME STEPPING SCHEME IN AN ATMOSPHERIC MODEL

This dissertation deals with aspects of sequential data assimilation (in particular ensemble Kalman filtering) and numerical weather forecasting. In the first part, the recently formulated Ensemble Kalman-Bucy (EnKBF) filter is revisited. It is shown that the previously used numerical integration scheme fails when the magnitude of the background error covariance grows beyond that of the observational error covariance in the forecast window. Therefore, we present a suitable integration scheme that handles the stiffening of the differential equations involved and doesn't represent further computational expense. Moreover, a transform-based alternative to the EnKBF is developed: under this scheme, the operations are performed in the ensemble space instead of in the state space. Advantages of this formulation are explained. For the first time, the EnKBF is implemented in an atmospheric model. The second part of this work deals with ensemble clustering, a phenomenon that arises when performing data assimilation using of deterministic ensemble square root filters in highly nonlinear forecast models. Namely, an M-member ensemble detaches into an outlier and a cluster of M-1 members. Previous works may suggest that this issue represents a failure of EnSRFs; this work dispels that notion. It is shown that ensemble clustering can be reverted also due to nonlinear processes, in particular the alternation between nonlinear expansion and compression of the ensemble for different regions of the attractor. Some EnSRFs that use random rotations have been developed to overcome this issue; these formulations are analyzed and their advantages and disadvantages with respect to common EnSRFs are discussed. The third and last part contains the implementation of the Robert-Asselin-Williams (RAW) filter in an atmospheric model. The RAW filter is an improvement to the widely popular Robert-Asselin filter that successfully suppresses spurious computational waves while avoiding any distortion in the mean value of the function. Using statistical significance tests both at the local and field level, it is shown that the climatology of the SPEEDY model is not modified by the changed time stepping scheme; hence, no retuning of the parameterizations is required. It is found the accuracy of the medium-term forecasts is increased by using the RAW filter

Taking into account the teacher way of thinking, in this study we analyzed the relationship between seven motivational variables and the implicit learning theories in a group of 111 students taking the Master Degree on Secondary Education, in the academic year 2011-2012. We carried out a cuasi-experimental study. Implicit theories were measured by an eleven-item questionnaire with triple choice answers, each of them representing one domain of the three learning theories: direct, interpretative and constructivist (Pozo & Scheuer, 1999). Parallel, seven motivational variables from the Self-determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) were measured. The results have shown the relationship between the students’ current learning conceptions and the current and retrospective motivational self-perceptions, suggesting that life experiences in Secondary School years have an important role in the current learning conceptions

La noción de tercer país en Borderlands/La Frontera como metáfora de la escritura transfronteriza de Gloria Anzaldúa

This article deals with the insertion of Borderlands/La Frontera. The New Mestiza in the theoretical framework of ectopic literature proposed by Tomás Albaladejo. As a result, a new possibility of this sort of literature is introduced. On the other hand, it is suggested that the concept of ectopic literature elucidates the notion of Gloria Anzaldua’s third country as a metaphor of the author’s cross-border literature. Thus, her literature aims to blur what she has referred to as an unnatural boundary and introduces, as a consequence, a new transcultural cartographyEn el presente artículo se plantea la inserción de la obra Borderlands/La Frontera.
