    O caranguejo-uçá é um importante recurso pesqueiro que se encontra sobre explorado em todo litoral brasileiro. Desempenha papel tanto econômico, quando fonte de renda para os atores da cadeia produtiva, quanto ecológico, na manutenção dos ecossistemas de mangues. No Amapá têm ocorrência em três municípios (Amapá, Calçoene e Oiapoque), e é comercializado principalmente no município de Macapá, tornando de fundamental importância a caracterização desta atividade, uma vez que este é o primeiro estudo sobre o comércio da espécie no Estado. Durante nove meses (outubro/2008 a junho/2009) foram realizadas visitas mensais (n=32) às feiras do Mercado Central do Igarapé das Mulheres para aplicação de entrevistas com os vendedores de caranguejo, e para o levantamento de dados biométricos de largura e comprimento do tefalotórax (CC e LC) dos animais comercializados. Aleatoriamente, foram adquiridos 854 exemplares machos que apresentaram LC média de 85,4 mm e CC médio de 65 mm. Verificou-se que os caranguejos comercializados são capturados principalmente nos municípios amapaenses. Os resultados obtidos indicam que há alterações de preço durante o ano, e que essa oscilação está relacionada à oferta com que este recurso é disponibilizado. Os dados obtidos mostram ainda, que houve comercialização durante o período de defeso na Feira do Mercado Central e que os animais comercializados procedem em maior parte de municípios paraenses. De modo geral, concluímos que a Portaria Estadual está sendo respeitada em relação ao tamanho mínimo de captura e a não comercialização de fêmeas, no entanto, os caranguejos continuam a serem comercializados no período legalmente proibido

    Analytical solution of a model for complex food webs

    We investigate numerically and analytically a recently proposed model for food webs [Nature {\bf 404}, 180 (2000)] in the limit of large web sizes and sparse interaction matrices. We obtain analytical expressions for several quantities with ecological interest, in particular the probability distributions for the number of prey and the number of predators. We find that these distributions have fast-decaying exponential and Gaussian tails, respectively.     Vortex core size in interacting cylindrical nanodot arrays

    The effect of dipolar interactions among cylindrical nanodots, with a vortex-core magnetic configuration, is analyzed by means of analytical calculations. The cylinders are placed in a N x N square array in two configurations - core oriented parallel to each other and with antiparallel alignment between nearest neighbors. Results comprise the variation in the core radius with the number of interacting dots, the distance between them and dot height. The dipolar interdot coupling leads to a decrease (increase) of the core radius for parallel (antiparallel) arrays

    We analyze the depinning transition of a driven interface in the 3d random-field Ising model (RFIM) with quenched disorder by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The interface initially built into the system is perpendicular to the [111]-direction of a simple cubic lattice. We introduce an algorithm which is capable of simulating such an interface independent of the considered dimension and time scale. This algorithm is applied to the 3d-RFIM to study both the depinning transition and the influence of thermal fluctuations on this transition. It turns out that in the RFIM characteristics of the depinning transition depend crucially on the existence of overhangs. Our analysis yields critical exponents of the interface velocity, the correlation length, and the thermal rounding of the transition. We find numerical evidence for a scaling relation for these exponents and the dimension d of the system.Comment: 6 pages, including 9 figures, submitted for publicatio

    The regular-geometric-figure solution to the NN-body problem is presented in a very simple way. The Newtonian formalism is used without resorting to a more involved rotating coordinate system. Those configurations occur for other kinds of interactions beyond the gravitational ones for some special values of the parameters of the forces.     Farming of native carnivore fish species has drawn attention due to their promising use in aquaculture. Among these species, tucunaré of the genus Cichla stand out, them being of high economical interest for sport fishing and Amazon's industry of ornamental fish. The present study describes the weight-length relationship (WLR), relative condition factor (Kn), red blood cell parameters, thrombocytes and leukocytes count of Cichla temensis Humboldt, 1821, farmed in central Amazon. Fish that underwent food training during fingerling culture received extruded ration containing 45% of crude protein during fattening, and had Kn with values from 0.925-1.199, which indicated good health condition during the culture. The equation obtained from the WLR was W = 0.0073Lt3.1435, indicating an isometric growth, which is the desirable for fish of fish farm. Red blood cell counts, total thrombocyte and leukocyte counts, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), concentration of mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCHC), lymphocytes, monocytes and neutrophils had intra-specific variation. A significant (p<0.001) positive correlation of the red blood cells number with the hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit was found. These are the first sets of blood parameters for C. temensis and could be used as reference for comparison in further studies to evaluate the health status of this fish in different environments, because assessment of these parameters may be used as quick tool for diagnosing diseases, stress and malnutrition

    The mangrove crab (Ucides cordatus) is a valuable fishery resource, overfished along the Brazilian coast. This study aimed to obtain bioecological data on this crab along the coast of the State of Amapá. Six bimonthly samplings were conducted between December 2008 and January 2010. Transects were used to estimate the density (burrows m-2) and population abundance (individuals m-2). All the animals were subjected to biometrics, with females being classified according to their stage of gonadal maturation. The mean density (1.09 burrows m-2) and abundance (0.31 individuals m-2) were influenced by the climate with the highest values &#8203;&#8203;in summer (1.17 burrows m-2 and 0.34 individuals m-2). The male to female ratio was 1.38:1 showing significant difference in the proportion of sexes. The individuals showed sexual dimorphism, with linear measurements significantly higher in males. The sampled animals also had larger carapace length and width (CL and CW) compared to crabs studied in other Brazilian states. There was a positive relationship between CW and CL and individual weight (IW) and CW for males (R2 = 0.83 and 0.90) and females (R2 = 0.79 and 0.84). The growth was negative allometric (CL increases to a lesser extent than CW) for both sexes. The highest frequency of ovigerous females (78%) and in maturation stage IV (38%) occurred in the CW size class between 59.8 and 67.5 mm. The peak of mature females occurred in May and August, showing a reproductive period different from those in other Brazilian states

    Scaling properties of driven interfaces in disordered media

    We perform a systematic study of several models that have been proposed for the purpose of understanding the motion of driven interfaces in disordered media. We identify two distinct universality classes: (i) One of these, referred to as directed percolation depinning (DPD), can be described by a Langevin equation similar to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, but with quenched disorder. (ii) The other, referred to as quenched Edwards-Wilkinson (QEW), can be described by a Langevin equation similar to the Edwards-Wilkinson equation but with quenched disorder. We find that for the DPD universality class the coefficient λ\lambda of the nonlinear term diverges at the depinning transition, while for the QEW universality class either λ=0\lambda = 0 or λ0\lambda \to 0 as the depinning transition is approached. The identification of the two universality classes allows us to better understand many of the results previously obtained experimentally and numerically. However, we find that some results cannot be understood in terms of the exponents obtained for the two universality classes {\it at\/} the depinning transition. In order to understand these remaining disagreements, we investigate the scaling properties of models in each of the two universality classes {\it above\/} the depinning transition. For the DPD universality class, we find for the roughness exponent αP=0.63±0.03\alpha_P = 0.63 \pm 0.03 for the pinned phase, and αM=0.75±0.05\alpha_M = 0.75 \pm 0.05 for the moving phase. For the growth exponent, we find βP=0.67±0.05\beta_P = 0.67 \pm 0.05 for the pinned phase, and βM=0.74±0.06\beta_M = 0.74 \pm 0.06 for the moving phase. Furthermore, we find an anomalous scaling of the prefactor of the width on the driving force.
