    Analyzing for Age-Friendliness within Planning Policies in the City of Waterloo

    Planning for individuals with varying degrees of impairments has, over the past 40 years, challenged conventional approaches to community development. However, more recently there has emerged, both within research and greater society, a need to understand how the disabling nature of the built environment impacts our inevitably aging population. Recognizing such, this thesis research explores whether planning policies within the City of Waterloo reflect an age-friendly model of development. Moreover, recognizing that the aging population increasingly experiences some form of impairment, this research further utilizes universal design as means to more comprehensively review for an aging supportive model. The fundamental goal of an age-friendly approach is to address the needs of individuals at all stages of their life with an obvious emphasis on promoting longer independence. A number of literature sources were utilized in developing two separate analysis tools that focused on goal-oriented policies such as Official Plans as well as prescriptive planning policy including Zoning By-laws and Urban Design Guidelines. This research attempts to provide a means with which to determine the age-friendliness of planning policies, how age-friendly policies may incorporate provisions regarding accessibility, as well as changes that municipalities may wish to consider in the implementation of an age-friendly model

    Dugong distribution and abundance on the urban coast of Queensland: a basis for management. Final Report to Marine and Tropical Research Facility Interim Projects 2005-6

    [Excerpt] The transitional funding from MTSRF plus supplementary funding from CRC Reef and CRC Torres Strait enabled the first survey of the entire urban coast of Queensland for dugongs to be carried out in November 2005. In addition, a reference block in Torres Strait was surveyed to provide a context for the survey of the urban coast. The results of the 2005 surveys are being presented to Traditional Owners and stakeholders at a series of workshops. The results of the 2005 survey have been analyzed in the context of results of previous surveys of various parts of this coast since the mid 1980s using comparable techniques. The results of the 20 year time series of surveys suggest that dugong numbers are now stable at the scale of the entire urban coast of Queensland although populations fluctuate at the level of individual survey blocks (usually bays), probably largely due to natural changes in seagrass habitats. The results of the surveys indicate that it will be important to: (1) develop cross-jurisdictional objectives for the management of dugongs at the scale of the entire region, and (2) co-ordinate management at both culturally and ecologically relevant scales

    Concussion Management, Education, and Return-to-Play Policies in High Schools: A Survey of Athletic Directors, Athletic Trainers, and Coaches

    Background: Concussions represent 8.9% to 13.2% of all high school athletic injuries. How these injuries are managed is currently unknown. Hypothesis: There are differences in concussion management and awareness between boys football, boys ice hockey, and boys and girls soccer. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiologic study. Methods: High school athletic directors were contacted via email and asked to complete an online survey with four separate sections for athletic directors, head coaches, team physicians, or certified athletic trainers. Results: According to coaches, concussion awareness education was provided for football (97%), hockey (65%), and boys and girls soccer (57% and 47%, respectively) (P \u3c 0.01). Use of sideline screening tools was significantly greater for football (P = 0.03). All participants agreed that a player who has suffered a concussion cannot return to play the same day. Conclusion: There is a difference in concussion management and awareness between the four sports. Concussion education is well promoted in football but should be expanded in soccer and hockey. Players are not allowed to return to play the same day, and the majority are referred to a physician. Clinical Relevance: Study results highlight the differences in concussion education between sports. Healthcare providers should address these gaps

    WISE Brown Dwarf Binaries: The Discovery of a T5+T5 and a T8.5+T9 System

    The multiplicity properties of brown dwarfs are critical empirical constraints for formation theories, while multiples themselves provide unique opportunities to test evolutionary and atmospheric models and examine empirical trends. Studies using high-resolution imaging cannot only uncover faint companions, but they can also be used to determine dynamical masses through long-term monitoring of binary systems. We have begun a search for the coolest brown dwarfs using preliminary processing of data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and have confirmed many of the candidates as late-type T dwarfs. In order to search for companions to these objects, we are conducting observations using the Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics system on Keck II. Here we present the first results of that search, including a T5 binary with nearly equal mass components and a faint companion to a T8.5 dwarf with an estimated spectral type of T9

    Nurses’ education, knowledge and perceptions of peripheral intravenous catheter management: A web-based, cross-sectional survey

    Background: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are the most used invasive medical device. Unfortunately, PIVCs fail for a variety of reasons and failure often results in serious adverse events leading to patient discomfort, infection, delays in treatment, increased healthcare costs, and even death. In Australia, qualified nurses assess, manage, and remove a PIVC as part of their clinical role. To date, no study has described the current state of knowledge and confidence (self-efficacy) about PIVCs from the perspectives of qualified nurses working in Australian hospital settings. Aims: To describe the current state of knowledge and confidence (self-efficacy) about PIVC management from the perspectives of qualified nurses working in Australian hospital settings. To explore how these related to the education received by these nurses. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey. Findings: Qualified nurses in Australia thought that education about PIVCs was important and that it should be underpinned by evidence-based guidelines. Knowledge Test score for the sample was 12.4/17 (SD 2.1), this equates to a mean grade of 73.0%. Respondents reported very high levels of confidence about caring for a patient with a PIVC in situ. Conclusion: Despite the frequent and increasing use of PIVCs and importantly the documented adverse events associated with poor assessment, management and inappropriate removal, qualified nurses’ knowledge and confidence remain poorly reported. We demonstrated fundamental gaps in qualified nurses’ knowledge in relation to assessment, management, and removal of PIVCs

    VW Hyi: optical spectroscopy and Doppler tomography

    We present high quality optical spectroscopy of the SU UMa-subtype dwarf nova, VW Hyi taken while the system was in quiescence. An S-wave is executed by the emission cores of the Hydrogen Balmer lines and by the emission lines of He I, Ca II, Fe II and He II. Using Doppler tomography we show it originates in the accretion stream-disc impact region. The He II emission is strongly phase-dependent, suggesting it originates exclusively within a hot cavity at the initial impact. We map the ionization structure of the stream-disc interaction region. One possible interpretation of this is that the Balmer hotspot lies downstream of the He II hotspot in the outer accretion disc, with the He I and Ca II hotspots at intermediate locations between the two. This suggests that Balmer emission is suppressed until material has cooled somewhat downstream of the impact site and is able to recombine. We favour a phase offset of 0.15+/-0.04 between the photometric ephemeris and inferior conjunction of the mass donor. The white dwarf contributes significantly to the optical continuum, with broad Balmer absorption and narrow Mg II 4481 absorption clearly apparent. This latter feature yields the gravitational redshift: v_grav=38+/-21 km s^-1, so M_1=0.71+0.18-0.26 M_sun. This implies M_2=0.11 +/- 0.03 M_sun and hence the donor is not a brown dwarf. A prominent Balmer jump is also observed. We note that the previously accepted system parameters for both VW Hyi and WX Hyi incoporate an algebraic error, and we provide a recalculated M_1(q) plane for WX Hyi.Comment: 10 pages (mn2e LaTeX), 9 figures, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ
