Large deviations for non-uniformly expanding maps

We obtain large deviation results for non-uniformly expanding maps with non-flat singularities or criticalities and for partially hyperbolic non-uniformly expanding attracting sets. That is, given a continuous function we consider its space average with respect to a physical measure and compare this with the time averages along orbits of the map, showing that the Lebesgue measure of the set of points whose time averages stay away from the space average decays to zero exponentially fast with the number of iterates involved. As easy by-products we deduce escape rates from subsets of the basins of physical measures for these types of maps. The rates of decay are naturally related to the metric entropy and pressure function of the system with respect to a family of equilibrium states. Women in the mutual societies of Portugal from the end of the nineteenth century to the 1930s

This chapter aims to express recent research on the history of women’s work and activism by focusing on women in the mutual societies of Portugal from a gender perspective. The main objective is thus analysing women’s rights and the discrimination prevailing in mixed associations (including women and men as members). Another central purpose involves recognising women-only associations as a space for meeting and collaboration amongst working-class women and feminists that attained a voice in the mutualism movement in which their claims on welfare issues targeted both themselves and their children. Furthermore, we seek to demonstrate that only in women’s mutual associations did the ideals of democracy and equality, advocated by mutualism, become fulfilled for women. Black hole formation in bidimensional dilaton gravity coupled to scalar matter systems

This work deals with the formation of black hole in bidimensional dilaton gravity coupled to scalar matter fields. We investigate two scalar matter systems, one described by a sixth power potential and the other defined with two scalar fields containing up to the fourth power in the fields. Dilaton Gravity with a Non-minmally Coupled Scalar Field

We discuss the two-dimensional dilaton gravity with a scalar field as the source matter. The coupling between the gravity and the scalar, massless, field is presented in an unusual form. We work out two examples of these couplings and solutions with black-hole behaviour are discussed and compared with those found in the literature

The First Year of the Large Hadron Collider: A Brief Review

The first year of LHC data taking provided an integrated luminosity of about 35/pb in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The accelerator and the experiments have demonstrated an excellent performance. The experiments have obtained important physics results in many areas, ranging from tests of the Standard Model to searches for new particles. Among other results the physics highlights have been the measurements of the W-, Z-boson and t t-bar production cross-sections, improved limits on supersymmetric and other hypothetical particles and the observation of jet-quenching, elliptical flow and J/Psi suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, invited brief review for Mod. Mértola in Late Antiquity: new archeological and epigraphic data

En Mértola se ha encontrado recientemente un considerable grupo de inscripciones paleocristianas que se asocian a dos monumentos de la Antigüedad Tardía. Uno de ellos parcialmente conocido, otro totalmente inédito. Los dos han sido objeto de excavaciones entre 2008 y 2009. Los nuevos textos epigráficos vienen a aumentar la ya numerosa colección epigráfica conocida y a reforzar la idea del uso de las lenguas griega y latina en el seno de una misma comunidad, la del puerto fluvial de Mértola, en el siglo VI d.C.Recently a new group of paleochristian inscriptions and two new monuments were found in Mértola. One of them was already known, but the other was ignored till now. Both were excavated between 2008 and 2009.
