Conclusão: a ZBI revela-se interessante para a aplicação a cuidadores idosos e as associações entre altos graus de sobrecarga, enfrentamento disfuncional e depressão apontam um cenário peculiar de vulnerabilidade a que este idoso que cuida de outro idoso pode estar exposto24To derive psychometric indicators of construct validity and internal consistence of the Zarit Burden Interview scale for caregivers, describing associations of the scale with metrics related to care demands, coping strategies and depression in aged caregivers. Method: crosscutting descriptive and correlational study. The convenience sample was composed by a hundred and twenty one senior caregivers (Avg=70.5 ± 7.2 years, 73% women). They answered a questionnaire to check the physical and cognitive demands of care, the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), the California Inventory of Coping Strategies and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Results: ZBI showed good internal consistency and also for the three factors emerging from factor analysis, explaining 44% of variability. ZBI is positively related with objective care demands (p < 0.001), depression (p = 0.006) and use of dysfunctional coping strategies (p = 0.0007). Conclusion: ZBI is of interest to be applied to aged caregivers and the association of higher degrees of burden, dysfunctional coping and depression show a vulnerability scenario that may affect to older people taking care of other elderl

To identify if the simultaneous presence of multimorbidity and high levels of perceived burden is associated to the presence of frailty in elderly people caring for other elderly people, inside a family context. METHOD: 148 elderly caregivers caring for other elderly people (M= 69,7 + 7 years old) participating in the Study "Psychological well-being of elderly caring for elderly inside a family context". The individuals were recruited in a criteria of convenience in public and private health services in the city of Campinas and surroundings. For the sake of this research, data were investigated about the socio-demographic context, the context of the care, the physical health evaluated by nine self-related items on diagnoses of chronicle diseases in the last 12 months, the overload of care by means of the Zarit Burden Scale, and the frailty by the subjective evaluation of frailty. Data were analysed by the statistic programme Statistical Analysis System (SAS), using descriptive analysis, measurements of association and multivaried hierarchical logistic regression. RESULTS: The final sample had 148 elderly caregivers, 77% of which were women, 62% spouses, with an average duration of care of 4,56 years. Of these, 35,1% were frail, 46% intermediate, and 18,9% were robust. The prevalence of multimorbidity and high perceived burden were 55.4% and 51.3%, respectively. Elderly caregivers with multiborbidity and high burden presented higher probability of frailty (OR=3,6; IC 1.55-8.36), followed by those with multimorbidity and low overload (OR=2,8; IC 1.13-6.79). CONCLUSIONS: Elderly people caring of other elderly people might be exposed to a double condition of vulnerability, since the coexistence of factors associated to the ageing process (multimorbidity) and factors associated to extenuating practice of care (perceived burden) are combined with the presence of the frailty syndromeMestradoGerontologiaMestra em GerontologiaCAPE

Network analysis: a multivariate statistical approach for health science research

    No full text
Network analysis is a graphical statistical technique that allows rapid visualization and interpretation of associations between multiple variables. There are still few theoretical studies on this method, especially in the areas of geriatrics and gerontology research, which cover the study of different social, clinical, or physical and mental health variables. The objectives of this study were to present the main theoretical aspects of network analysis and demonstrate its applicability by analyzing studies that used this technique, offering an accessible language for all levels of knowledge in statistics. The main characteristics of the graphs, basic theoretical concepts, and scientific articles that used networks were demonstrated. This methodological study can help the reader to understand this analytical method, which is still little explored in national research. There is a scarcity of research on this subject in the areas of geriatrics and gerontology; however, technological advances, the availability of statistical programs with new data analysis resources, and the dissemination of information are relevant factors for the expansion of knowledge and the use of network analysis in this context.</p

Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics.
