Monitoring luminous yellow massive stars in M33: new yellow hypergiant candidates
The evolution of massive stars surviving the red supergiant (RSG) stage
remains unexplored due to the rarity of such objects. The yellow hypergiants
(YHGs) appear to be the warm counterparts of post-RSG classes located near the
Humphreys-Davidson upper luminosity limit, which are characterized by
atmospheric instability and high mass-loss rates. We aim to increase the number
of YHGs in M33 and thus to contribute to a better understanding of the
pre-supernova evolution of massive stars. Optical spectroscopy of five
dust-enshrouded YSGs selected from mid-IR criteria was obtained with the goal
of detecting evidence of extensive atmospheres. We also analyzed BVI photometry
for 21 of the most luminous YSGs in M33 to identify changes in the spectral
type. To explore the properties of circumstellar dust, we performed SED-fitting
of multi-band photometry of the 21 YSGs. We find three luminous YSGs in our
sample to be YHG candidates, as they are surrounded by hot dust and are
enshrouded within extended, cold dusty envelopes. Our spectroscopy of star 2
shows emission of more than one H component, as well as emission of
CaII, implying an extended atmospheric structure. In addition, the long-term
monitoring of the star reveals a dimming in the visual light curve of amplitude
larger than 0.5 mag that caused an apparent drop in the temperature that
exceeded 500 K. We suggest the observed variability to be analogous to that of
the Galactic YHG Cas. Five less luminous YSGs are suggested as post-RSG
candidates showing evidence of hot or/and cool dust emission. We demonstrate
that mid-IR photometry, combined with optical spectroscopy and time-series
photometry, provide a robust method for identifying candidate YHGs. Future
discovery of YHGs in Local Group galaxies is critical for the study of the late

Acute fasting before conception affects metabolic and endocrine status without impacting follicle and oocyte development and embryo gene expression in the rabbit.
Food deprivation affects female reproduction. The goal of the present study was to elucidate in the rabbit model the effects of acute energy restriction on ovarian function (follicle development, atresia rate and in vitro oocyte maturation) and embryonic development and gene expression of some candidate genes. Serum metabolic parameters (non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides, glucose, insulin and leptin concentrations) and endocrine markers (oestradiol-17ÎČ and progesterone concentrations) were also studied. A control group of nulliparous does fed ad libitum and a 72-h fasted group were used. At the end of the nutritional treatment, the ovaries of half of the animals were retrieved while the other animals were re-fed and artificially inseminated to recover embryos at 84 h after insemination, during the luteal phase. At the end of fasting, increased serum NEFA and decreased leptin concentrations were observed in the fasted group, but no differences appeared in serum steroid concentrations, follicle population and atresia rate or nuclear and cytoplasmic oocyte maturation. In the luteal phase, insulin concentrations increased notably in the fasted group. The number of recovered embryos per female and the speed of embryo development were reduced in the food-deprived group. Acute fasting altered both metabolic and endocrine markers and embryo development, but follicle and oocyte development and embryo gene expression were not affected
KINETIC AND KINEMATIC ANALYSIS OF THE DOMINANT AND NON-DOMINANT KICKING LEG IN THE TAEKWONDO ROUNDHOUSE KICK
The purpose of this study was to examine kinematic variables relevant to kick performance with the dominant and non-dominant leg, in a roundhouse kick measured from three execution distances. Forty-three taekwondo athletes that had competitive taekwondo experience participated in the study. A dependent t-test indicated that there were no differences between extremities at any distance (p > .01). Based on these results, competitive taekwondo players do not seem to reveal differences in limb kinematics. The results also showed the influence of the distance from which the dominant leg explains a larger percentage of variance in reaction time (24%), execution time (20%) and total response time (60%) of the non-dominant leg from a short distance, whereas regarding impact force (22%), this higher percentage is explained from a long distance

Inverse association between negative symptoms and body mass index in chronic schizophrenia.
BACKGROUND: We investigated whether negative symptoms, such as poor motivation or anhedonia, were associated with higher body mass index (BMI) in stable patients with schizophrenia chronically treated with antipsychotic medication. METHODS: 62 olanzapine- or clozapine-treated patients with illness duration of at least four years were selected from an international multicenter study on the characterization of negative symptoms. All participants completed the Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Bivariate correlations between BMI and negative symptoms (BNSS) were explored, as well as multiple regression analyses. We further explored the association of two principal component factors of the BNSS and BMI. Subsidiary analyses re-modeled the above using the negative symptoms subscale of the PANSS and the EMSLEY factor for negative symptoms for convergent validity. RESULTS: Lower negative symptoms (BNSS score) were associated with higher BMI (r=-0.31; p=0.015). A multiple regression analysis showed that negative symptoms (BNSS score) and age were significant predictors of BMI (p=0.037). This was mostly driven by the motivation/pleasure factor of the BNSS. Within this second factor, BMI was negatively associated with anhedonia (r=-0.254; p=0.046) and asociality (r=-0.253; p=0.048), but not avolition (r=-0.169; p=0.188). EMSLEY score was positively associated with BNSS (r=0.873, p<0.001), but negatively associated with BMI (r=-0.308; p=0.015). The association between PANSS and BMI did not reach significance (r=-224, p=0.080). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that lower negative symptoms were associated with higher BMI (assessed using both the BNSS and EMSLEY) in chronic stable schizophrenia patients, mostly due to lower anhedonia and asociality levels
Strong Constraints on the Parameter Space of the MSSM from Charge and Color Breaking Minima
A complete analysis of all the potentially dangerous directions in the
field-space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model is carried out. They
are of two types, the ones associated with the existence of charge and color
breaking minima in the potential deeper than the realistic minimum and the
directions in the field-space along which the potential becomes unbounded from
below. The corresponding new constraints on the parameter space are given in an
analytic form, representing a set of necessary and sufficient conditions to
avoid dangerous directions. They are very strong and, in fact, there are
extensive regions in the parameter space that become forbidden. This produces
important bounds, not only on the value of , but also on the values of
and . Finally, the crucial issue of the one-loop corrections to the

Control of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, a neglected disease: results of a control programme in Satipo Province, Peru.
Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) is an important health problem in many rural areas of Latin America, but there are few data on the results of programmatic approaches to control the disease. We report the results of a control programme in San Martin de Pangoa District, which reports one of the highest prevalences of MCL in Peru. For 2 years (2001--2002), the technicians at the health post were trained in patient case management, received medical support and were supplied with antimonials. An evaluation after 2 years showed the following main achievements: better diagnosis of patients, who were confirmed by microscopy in 34% (82/240) of the cases in 2001 and 60% of the cases (153/254) in 2002; improved follow-up during treatment: 237 of 263 (90%) patients who initiated an antimonial therapy ended the full treatment course; improved follow-up after treatment: 143 of 237 (60%) patients who ended their full treatment were correctly monitored during the required period of 6 (cutaneous cases) or 12 (mucosal cases) months after the end of treatment. These achievements were largely due to the human and logistical resources made available, the constant availability of medications and the close collaboration between the Ministry of Health, a national research institute and an international non-governmental organization. At the end of this period, the health authorities decided to register a generic brand of sodium stibogluconate, which is now in use. This should allow the treatment of a significant number of additional patients, while saving money to invest in other facets of the case management
