Criticality of environmental information obtainable by dynamically controlled quantum probes

    Get PDF
A universal approach to decoherence control combined with quantum estimation theory reveals a critical behavior, akin to a phase transition, of the information obtainable by a qubit probe concerning the memory time of environmental fluctuations. This criticality emerges only when the probe is subject to dynamical control. It gives rise to a sharp transition between two dynamical phases characterized by either a short or long memory time compared to the probing time. This phase-transition of the environmental information is a fundamental feature that facilitates the attainment of the highest estimation precision of the environment memory-time and the characterization of probe dynamics.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

Maximizing information on the environment by dynamically controlled qubit probes

We explore the ability of a qubit probe to characterize unknown parameters of its environment. By resorting to quantum estimation theory, we analytically find the ultimate bound on the precision of estimating key parameters of a broad class of ubiquitous environmental noises ("baths") which the qubit may probe. These include the probe-bath coupling strength, the correlation time of generic bath spectra, the power laws governing these spectra, as well as their dephasing times T2. Our central result is that by optimizing the dynamical control on the probe under realistic constraints one may attain the maximal accuracy bound on the estimation of these parameters by the least number of measurements possible. Applications of this protocol that combines dynamical control and estimation theory tools to quantum sensing are illustrated for a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond used as a probe.Comment: 8 pages + 6 pages (appendix), 3 Figure

    Robustness of spin-chain state-transfer schemes

This is a shortened and slightly edited version of a chapter in the collection "Quantum State Transfer and Network Engineering", edited by G.M. Nikolopoulos and I. Jex, where we review our own research about the robustness of spin-chain state-transfer schemes along with other approaches to the topic. Since our own research is documented elsewhere to a large extent we here restrict ourselves to a review of other approaches which might be useful to other researchers in the field

Spin chains for robust state transfer: Modified boundary couplings vs. completely engineered chains

Quantum state transfer in the presence of noise is one of the main challenges in building quantum computers. We compare the quantum state transfer properties for two classes of qubit chains under the influence of static randomness. In fully engineered chains all nearest-neighbor couplings are tuned in such a way that a single-qubit state can be transferred perfectly between the ends of the chain, while in boundary-controlled chains only the two couplings between the transmitting and receiving qubits and the remainder of the chain can be optimized. We study how the noise in the couplings affects the state transfer fidelity depending on the noise model and strength as well as the chain type and length. We show that the desired level of fidelity and transfer time are important factors in designing a chain. In particular we demonstrate that transfer efficiency comparable or better than that of the most robust engineered systems can also be reached in boundary-controlled chains without the demanding engineering of a large number of couplings.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Hormone deprivation alters mitochondrial function and lipid profile in the hippocampus

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a common hallmark in aging. In the female, reproductive senescence is characterized by loss of ovarian hormones, many of whose neuroprotective effects converge upon mitochondria. The functional integrity of mitochondria is dependent on membrane fatty acid and phospholipid composition, which are also affected during aging. The effect of long-term ovarian hormone deprivation upon mitochondrial function and its putative association with changes in mitochondrial membrane lipid profile in the hippocampus, an area primarily affected during aging and highly responsive to ovarian hormones, is unknown. To this aim, Wistar adult female rats were ovariectomized or sham-operated. Twelve weeks later, different parameters of mitochondrial function (O2 uptake, ATP production, membrane potential and respiratory complex activities) as well as membrane phospholipid content and composition were evaluated in hippocampal mitochondria. Chronic ovariectomy reduced mitochondrial O2 uptake and ATP production rates and induced membrane depolarization during active respiration without altering the activity of respiratory complexes. Mitochondrial membrane lipid profile showed no changes in cholesterol levels but higher levels of unsaturated fatty acids and a higher peroxidizability index in mitochondria from ovariectomized rats. Interestingly, ovariectomy also reduced cardiolipin content and altered cardiolipin fatty acid profile leading to a lower peroxidizability index. In conclusion, chronic ovarian hormone deprivation induces mitochondrial dysfunction and changes in the mitochondrial membrane lipid profile comparable to an aging phenotype. Our study provides insights into ovarian hormone loss-induced early lipidomic changes with bioenergetic deficits in the hippocampus that may contribute to the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other age-associated disorders observed in postmenopause.Fil: Zarate, Sandra Cristina. This article analyzes the characteristic materials of the rationalized construction systems typical of aridseismic zones in relation to the carbon dioxide emissions associated with them during their production, use and final disposal. For this, a multiobjective optimization matrix (MOM) is built that facilitates the early estimation, throughout its life cycle, of the CO2 emissions associated with the materialization and location of social housing in the arid-seismic zone. Its development involves the determination of the climate change indicator of each of the construction components, as well as the total incorporated energy and their thermal transmittance. With these values, the weighting of each of the construction components considered is made, based on the use of the hierarchical analytical process. In relation to the different case studies analyzed, it is concluded that the criteria that support the materialization of social housing disregard environmental parameters and hygrothermal comfort. So, the tool developed allows the users of these homes to be empowered, so that they can exercise their right to decent housing and a healthy, balanced and fit environment for human development.

Cry genes profile and proteolytic activity of native Bacillus thuringiensis strains against Spodoptera frugiperda

    Get PDF
Introduction: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces entomopathogenic Cry proteins which are activated to pathogenic form by proteases. Objective: Determination of cry genes and proteolytic activity in three native Bt strains. Material and methods: Total DNA was isolated with the CTAB technique. Cry 1 and 2 genes were amplified with general and specifics primers. Proteolytic activity was assayed by using azocasein as substrate. Results and Discussion: Specific cry genes and the biomass-bound protease activity are showed in the table. Bt RT displayed different cry specific content than the others strains. In addition to Cry protein, Bt is also an excellent source of protease activities. Bt RT has a proteolytic activity significantly different to that achieved for the reference strain Bt 4D1 (P> 0.05, Tukey test). Effect of extrusion conditions and postextrusion techniques on the morphology and thermal/mechanical properties of polycaprolactone/clay nanocomposites

    Get PDF
The effect of extrusion conditions on the performance of polycaprolactone /organo-modified clay nanocomposites was studied. It was demonstrated that the extrusion parameters have negligible effect on the molecular weight of polycaprolactone, on the morphology of the nanocomposites and on the final thermal/mechanical properties of the materials. This result was a consequence of the previous optimization of both polymer/clay compatibility and clay processing stability. Finally, the molten-polycaprolactone/clay mixtures were post-processed by different techniques submitting the mixtures to extensional flow. Clay platelets alignment was observed as a function of the extensional flow intensity which further improved the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.Fil: Ludueña, Leandro Nicolas.
