    An Algorithm for Dynamic Load Balancing of Synchronous Monte Carlo Simulations on Multiprocessor Systems

    We describe an algorithm for dynamic load balancing of geometrically parallelized synchronous Monte Carlo simulations of physical models. This algorithm is designed for a (heterogeneous) multiprocessor system of the MIMD type with distributed memory.     Nuclear translocation and signalling of L1-CAM in human carcinoma cells requires ADAM10 and presenilin/gamma-secretase activity

    L1-CAM (L1 cell-adhesion molecule), or more simply L1, plays an important role in the progression of human carcinoma. Overexpression promotes tumour-cell invasion and motility, growth in nude mice and tumour metastasis. It is feasible that L1-dependent signalling contributes to these effects. However, little is known about its mechanism in tumour cells. We reported previously that L1 is cleaved by ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease) and that the cytoplasmic part is essential for L1 function. Here we analysed more closely the role of proteolytic cleavage in L1-mediated nuclear signalling. Using OVMz carcinoma cells and L1-transfected cells as a model, we found that ADAM10-mediated cleavage of L1 proceeds in lipid raft and non-raft domains. The cleavage product, L1-32, is further processed by PS (presenilin)/gamma-secretase to release L1-ICD, an L1 intracellular domain of 28 kDa. Overexpression of dominantnegative PS1 or use of a specific gamma-secretase inhibitor leads to an accumulation of L1-32. Fluorescence and biochemical analysis revealed a nuclear localization for L1-ICD. Moreover, inhibition of ADAM10 and/or gamma-secretase blocks nuclear translocation of L1-ICD and L1-dependent gene regulation. Overexpression of recombinant L1-ICD mediates gene regulation in a similar manner to full-length L1. Our results establish for the first time that regulated proteolytic processing by ADAM10 and PS/gamma-secretase is essential for the nuclear signalling of L1 in human carcinoma cell lines.     Large-scale Simulation of the Two-dimensional Kinetic Ising Model

    We present Monte Carlo simulation results for the dynamical critical exponent zz of the two-dimensional kinetic Ising model using a lattice of size 106×10610^6 \times 10^6 spins. We used Glauber as well as Metropolis dynamics.     Der optische Stark-Effekt mit quantisiertem Strahlungsfeld

    Bei der theoretischen Beschreibung von spektroskopischen Experimenten wird in der Regel das Materiesystem quantenmechanisch beschrieben, während das Strahlungsfeld klassisch behandelt wird. Diese semiklassische Näherung ist zur Beschreibung von Experimenten, bei denen eine starke Kopplung zwischen dem Matriesystem und einzelnen Photonen besteht, nicht mehr gßltig. Dies kann beispielsweise innerhalb eines optischen Resonators der Fall sein. In dieser Arbeit wird am Beispiel eines Pump-Test- Experiments zum Nachweis des optischen Stark-Effekts untersucht, welche zusätzlichen Effekte sich bei einer quantisierten Beschreibung des Strahlungsfeldes ergeben. Ein signifikanter Effekt ist, dass die Photonenstatistik des Pumpfeldes sich in der Linienform der verschobenen Resonanzlinie widerspiegelt. Weiter wurde in dieser Arbeit bei kleiner Pumpverstimmung ein Verstärkungseffekt gefunden, der ebenfalls auf der quantisierten Behandlung des Strahlungsfeldes beruht (nichtklassische Verstärkung). Es treten ferner bei grosseren Ensemblen von Zwei-Niveau -Systemen zusätzliche Unterstrukturen und Resonanzen auf. Auch kann der Nachweis des optischen Stark-Effekts Aufschluss ßber die Nichtdiagonalelemente bezßglich der Photonenzahl des quantisierten Pumpfeldes geben.Im Hinblick auf die Beschreibung komplexer Materiesystemen wurde in dieser Arbeit auch eine näherungsweise Berechnung der Testabsorption mit quantisiertem Strahlungsfeld im Rahmen einer Dichtematrixtheorie untersucht. Insbesondere war hier fßr die quantitative Beschreibung der nichtklassischen Verstärkung eine Berßcksichtigung hoherer Korrelationen zwingend erforderlich. Auch wurden näherungsweise Entkopp- lungen unter Berßcksichtigung der Erhaltungsgrossen durch- gefßhrt. Die Dichtematrixtheorie wurde auf die Untersuchung des optischen Stark-Effektes an storstellengebundenen Exzitonen in Halbleitern angewandt. Da diese Resonanzen vergleichsweise kleine homogene und inhomogene Linienbreiten aufweisen,ist hier experimentell zu erwarten, dass sich feine Effekte des quantisierten Pumpfeldes bemerkbar machen konnen.The theoretical description of spectroscopic experiments usu ally relies on a semiclassical approach where the matter system is described in terms of quantum mechanics while the radiation field is treated classically. This approach does n ot work well for systems with a strong coupling between the matter system and photons of the radiation field. The latter can be the case within an optical resonator.In this thesis, additional effects of a quantized radiation field are inves tigated on a pump-probe experiment for detecting the optical Stark effect. One significant effect is that the lineshape of the shifted resonance displays the photon statistics of the pump field. For small pump detuning probe gain results in a frequency regime where the semiclassical treatment predicts absorption. This effect is refered to nonclassical gain. For larger ensembles of two-level systems, additional substructures and resonances appear within the probe absorption spectrum. Also non- diagonal elements of the field density matrix can be detected in such an experiment. In order to describe a more complex matter systems, the optical Stark effect has been treated in terms of a density matrix approach with quantized radiation fields. For a quantitative description of nonclassical gain, higher correlation terms had to be treated properly. Moreover, conserved quantities were taken into account in approximate decouplings. The density matrix approach was applied to the description of the optical Stark effect on impurity-bound excitons in semiconductors. These systems are of high interest as their narrow resonances might allow the demonstration of fine effects of the quantized radiation field

    Fast-beam photodissociation imaging of molecular ions

    A novel arrangement to study photofragmentation of molecular ions using fast beam (keV) imaging techniques combined with fast ion-beam pulsing and trapping has been realized. The setup was transferred to the new free-electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH) for the first user experiments. With this apparatus experiments were conducted on the two rare-gas dimer ions Ne2+ and Ar2+ utilizing a pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 2.33 and 4.66eV photon energy and on HeH+ using the free electron laser at 38.8 eV. Photofragmentation of Ar2+ was measured at 266nm, where the C2Sigma+g repulsive curve dominates. The angular fragment distribution was mainly parallel to the laser polarization, as expected, but a sizable transverse contribution increasing at energy releases corresponding to vibrationally excited target ions was found. Although spin-orbit coupling in Ar2+ remains as the most plausible explanation, the observed size of the effect is much larger than expected using theoretical predictions. Photodissociation of the Ne2+ was measured at 532nm where the A2Piu curve is dominant and the C2Sigma+g curve becomes important for higher vibrational target excitation. Also here, a mainly parallel angular charactistic was observed plus a perpendicular contribution which remained high throughout the observed kinetic energy release regime. The photofragmentation studies of HeH+ with the free electron laser at 32nm wavelength, revealed in the kinetic energy release spectrum, a contribution of 50% from highly excited He0 fragments, indicating the important contribution of many high-lying repulsive curves. The angular distributions showed a dominant contribution of Sigma->Pi transitions, underlining the large importance of this symmetry among the excited curves contributing to photodissociation. The cross sections for both symmetries were measured with a total of (1.4+-0.7)*10-18 cm2
