A retrospective study was carried out on the dental trauma records of 93 patients (55 boys, 38 girls) with 129 crown-fractured teeth. The patients’ average age was 9.57 years (SD 1.57), ranging between 7 and 15 years. Uncomplicated crown facture (comprising enamel–dentin) was the most observed type of injury (n = 107, 83%). Only 15 patients (16.13%) sought treatment in less than 24 h following the injury. Of 41 injured teeth (31.79%) the apices were open at the time of presentation at the clinic. The initial treatment of these injured teeth were interim restoration with acid-etch and composite (69%), Cvek amputation (2.33%), fragment reattachment (1.55%), apexification (APX, 10.07%), and root-canal treatment (RCT, 17.05%). Out of 94 teeth, which were diagnosed as vital on admittance, 23 (24.46%) later developed pulp necrosis and required APX or RCT depending on their apical status. In 66 teeth (51.16%) definitive treatment was provided with only esthetic restoration (ER), while in 15.50% and 26.68% of injured teeth ER was carried out following APX and RCT, and RCT, respectively. Definitive treatment was provided in 3–6 months for 29.45% of the injured teeth, while 27.13% and 20.16% of teeth received definitive treatment within 1–3 months and 6 months to 1 year, respectively. Type of crown-fracture, elapsed time following injury, and vitality of the tooth on admittance and pulp necrosis observed were significantly related to the total time spent for definitive treatment (P \u3c 0.05)

    Get PDF
Talon cusp is a tooth anomaly that affects both the primary and the permanent dentitions. However, the occurrence of this anomalous cusp is rather infrequent in the primary dentition. Only 7 cases of bilateral talon cusps affecting the primary teeth have been reported in the dental literature. This is a case report of bilateral talon cusps on primary maxillary central incisors whose histologic evaluation revealed the existence of pulpal tissue in the anomalous cusps

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of experimentally derived surfactant-containing acid gel with those of different surface-conditioning agents on microleakage of unfilled and filled sealants applied to permanent teeth following noninvasive and invasive procedures. Method and materials: Four main groups of surface-conditioning agents (NRC; NRC + Prime&Bond NT; Email Preparator Blue; and experimental acid gel) were subdivided into 16 subgroups (n = 8). Subgroups were designed according to the surface preparation procedures applied (noninvasive and invasive) and fissure sealants used (Helioseal and Helioseal F). After application of the test materials, the specimens were subjected to thermocycling and then immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin dye. Following sectioning, specimens were examined under a stereomicroscope and microleakage scores were assigned. Results: Subgroups 9 (Email Preparator Blue + Helioseal), 11 (invasive + Email Preparator Blue + Helioseal), 13 (experimental acid gel + Helioseal), and 15 (invasive + experimental acid gel + Helioseal) showed no microleakage. The differences between those subgroups and subgroups 1 (NRC + Helioseal), 2 (NRC + Helioseal F), 3 (invasive + NRC + Helioseal), 4 (invasive + NRC + Helioseal F), 5 (NRC + Prime&Bond NT + Helioseal), and 6 (NRC + Prime&Bond NT + Helioseal F) were statistically significant. Conclusion: Email Preparator Blue and surfactant-containing experimental acid gel, combined with an invasive/noninvasive surface preparation procedure and Helioseal, significantly prevented microleakage

Introduction: Preventive dentistry is one of the important part of dentistry education, where oraldental health education (ODHE) is to be given to patients and their relatives. In this study, it was aimed to measure the effectiveness of the oral-dental health peer education given to the students of Antalya Bilim University (ABU) with 3 different education models by the 1st year students of the Faculty of Dentistry (DF). Materials and Methods: A questionnaire measuring the level of oral-dental health knowledge was applied to 1077 volunteer students aged 17-25, who agreed to participate in the study, at the ABU Döşemealtı Campus, before the training. DF students, who will serve as peer educators, were randomly divided into 3 groups according to the education methods (Brochure, Model, Video) and a second questionnaire consisting of the same questions was applied 7-10 days after the education given. A retrospective clinicopathological study of 1,548 cases of female genital tuberculosis between 1940 and 2011 was conducted. The mean age of the cases was 29.49 years. Involvement of the endometrium was noted in 1,073, fallopian tubes in 164, cervix in 157, and 154 had multiple organ involvement. Clinically, 115 cases (7.4%) were diagnosed as having primary infertility and 12 cases (0.8%) as having secondary infertility. There was a coexistent carcinoma in 1.5% of the cases. Peritoneal tuberculosis in 21 cases and tuberculous lymphadenitis in 7 cases were seen as well. The clinicopathological criteria of female genital tuberculosis in the different organs are described, and special attention is paid to infertility associated with tuberculous lesion, and awareness of the fact that the disease is still with us is thus particularly important

Ribavirin shows antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 and downregulates the activity of TMPRSS2 and the expression of ACE2 In Vitro

    No full text
Ribavirin is a guanosine analog and has a broad-spectrum antiviral activity against RNA viruses. Based on this, we aimed to show the anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity of this drug molecule via in vitro, in silico and molecular techniques. Ribavirin showed antiviral activity in Vero E6 cells following SARS-CoV-2 infection whereas the drug itself did not show any toxic effect over the concentration range tested. In silico analysis suggested that Ribarivin has a broad-spectrum impact on SARS-CoV-2, acting at different viral proteins. According to the detailed molecular techniques, Ribavirin was shown to decrease the expression of TMPRSS2 both at mRNA and protein levels 48 hours after treatment. The suppressive effect of Ribavirin in ACE2 protein expression was shown to be dependent on cell types. Finally, proteolytic activity assays showed that Ribavirin also showed an inhibitory effect on TMPRSS2 enzyme. Based on these results, we hypothesized that Ribavirin may inhibit the expression of TMPRSS2 by modulating the formation of inhibitory G-quadruplex structures at the TMPRSS2 promoter. As a conclusion, Ribavirin is a potential antiviral drug for the treatment against SARS-CoV-2, and it interferes with the effect of TMPRSS2 and ACE2 expression. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
