    HST resolves stars in a tiny body falling on the dwarf galaxy DDO 68

    We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of a stream-like system associated with the dwarf galaxy DDO 68, located in the Lynx-Cancer Void at a distance of D∼\sim12.65 Mpc from us. The stream, previously identified in deep Large Binocular Telescope images as a diffuse low surface brightness structure, is resolved into individual stars in the F606W (broad V) and F814W (∼\simI) images acquired with the Wide Field Camera 3. The resulting V, I color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the resolved stars is dominated by old (age≳\gtrsim1-2 Gyr) red giant branch (RGB) stars. From the observed RGB tip, we conclude that the stream is at the same distance as DDO 68, confirming the physical association with it. A synthetic CMD analysis indicates that the large majority of the star formation activity in the stream occurred at epochs earlier than ∼\sim1 Gyr ago, and that the star formation at epochs more recent than ∼\sim500 Myr ago is compatible with zero. The total stellar mass of the stream is ∼106M⊙\sim10^{6} M_{\odot}, about 1/100 of that of DDO~68. This is a striking example of hierarchical merging in action at the dwarf galaxy scales.Comment: ApJ in pres

    Chemical abundances and radial velocities in the extremely metal-poor galaxy DDO 68

    We present chemical abundances and radial velocities of six HII regions in the extremely metal-poor star-forming dwarf galaxy DDO 68. They are derived from deep spectra in the wavelength range 3500 - 10,000 {\AA}, acquired with the Multi Object Double Spectrograph (MODS) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). In the three regions where the [O III]λ\lambda4363 {\AA} line was detected, we inferred the abundance of He, N, O, Ne, Ar, and S through the "direct" method. We also derived the oxygen abundances of all the six regions adopting indirect method calibrations. We confirm that DDO 68 is an extremely metal-poor galaxy, and a strong outlier in the luminosity - metallicity relation defined by star-forming galaxies. With the direct-method we find indeed an oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H)=7.14±\pm0.07 in the northernmost region of the galaxy and, although with large uncertainties, an even lower 12+log(O/H)=6.96±\pm0.09 in the "tail". This is, at face value, the most metal-poor direct abundance detection of any galaxy known. We derive a radial oxygen gradient of -0.06±\pm0.03 dex/kpc (or -0.30 dex R25−1R_{25}^{-1}) with the direct method, and a steeper gradient of -0.12±\pm0.03 dex/kpc (or -0.59 dex R25−1R_{25}^{-1}) from the indirect method. For the α\alpha-element to oxygen ratios we obtain values in agreement with those found in other metal-poor star-forming dwarfs. For nitrogen, instead, we infer much higher values, leading to log(N/O)∼−1.4\sim-1.4, at variance with the suggested existence of a tight plateau at −1.6-1.6 in extremely metal poor dwarfs. The derived helium mass fraction ranges from Y=0.240±\pm0.005 to Y=0.25±\pm0.02, compatible with standard big bang nucleosynthesis. Finally, we measured HII region radial velocities in the range 479−-522 km/s from the tail to the head of the "comet", consistent with the rotation derived in the HI.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    The Star Formation History of NGC 1705: a Post-Starburst Galaxy on the Verge of Activity

    We infer the star formation history in different regions of the blue compact dwarf NGC 1705 by comparing synthetic color-magnitude diagrams with HST optical and near-infrared photometry. We find that NGC 1705 is not a young galaxy because its star formation commenced at least 5 Gyr ago. On the other hand, we confirm the existence of a recent burst of star formation between 15 and 10 Myr ago. We also find evidence for new strong activity, which started 3 Myr ago and is still continuing. The old population is spread across the entire galaxy, while the young and intermediate stars are more concentrated in the central regions. We derive an almost continuous star formation with variable rate, and exclude the presence of long quiescent phases between the episodes during the last ~1 Gyr. The central regions experienced an episode of star formation of \~0.07 Msun/yr (for a Salpeter initial mass function [IMF]) 15 to 10 Myr ago. This coincides with the strong activity in the central super star cluster. We find a rate of ~0.3 Msun/yr for the youngest ongoing burst which started ~3 Myr ago. This is higher than in other dwarfs and comparable to the rate of NGC 1569. The star formation rate of earlier episodes is not especially high and falls in the range 10^{-3}-10^{-1} Msun/yr.     LBT/MODS spectroscopy of globular clusters in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449

    We present intermediate-resolution (R∼\sim1000) spectra in the ∼\sim3500-10,000 A range of 14 globular clusters in the magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 acquired with the Multi Object Double Spectrograph on the Large Binocular Telescope. We derived Lick indices in the optical and the CaII-triplet index in the near-infrared in order to infer the clusters' stellar population properties. The inferred cluster ages are typically older than ∼\sim9 Gyr, although ages are derived with large uncertainties. The clusters exhibit intermediate metallicities, in the range −1.2≲-1.2\lesssim[Fe/H]≲−0.7\lesssim-0.7, and typically sub-solar [α/Fe\alpha/Fe] ratios, with a peak at ∼−0.4\sim-0.4. These properties suggest that i) during the first few Gyrs NGC 4449 formed stars slowly and inefficiently, with galactic winds having possibly contributed to the expulsion of the α\alpha-elements, and ii) globular clusters in NGC 4449 formed relatively "late", from a medium already enriched in the products of type Ia supernovae. The majority of clusters appear also under-abundant in CN compared to Milky Way halo globular clusters, perhaps because of the lack of a conspicuous N-enriched, second-generation of stars like that observed in Galactic globular clusters. Using the cluster velocities, we infer the dynamical mass of NGC 4449 inside 2.88 kpc to be M(<<2.88 kpc)=3.15−0.75+3.16×109 M⊙3.15^{+3.16}_{-0.75} \times 10^9~M_\odot.     Hematological and serum biochemistry values in free-ranging crested porcupine

    The crested porcupine is a widespread naturalized Italian rodent of African origin; nevertheless, very little information on the population abundance and its health status is available. In this study, the hematological and serum chemistry profile of 10 free-ranging captured crested porcupines was established for the first time. The mean hematological values resulted: 5.7 SD 0.4 M/μL for red blood cells; 13.6 SD 0.8 g/dL for hemoglobin; 77.3 SD 5.7 fL for mean corpuscular volume and 30.1 SD 4.7 g/dL for mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration; 14.4 SD 7.2 K/μL for white blood cells; and 557.0 SD 469.9 K/μL for platelets. The mean urea and creatinine values resulted with 19.8 SD 8.3 mg/dL and 1.6 SD 3.0 mg/dL, respectively. The mean value of total protein was 6.7 SD 1.0 g/dL, with values of albumin higher than globulins. The mean activity of creatine kinase, aspartate transaminase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and alkaline phosphatase was 927.3 SD 607.6 U/L, 199.2 SD 70.8 U/L, 16.9 SD 13.7 U/L, and 256 SD 75.8 U/L, respectively. Highest values of alkaline phosphatase were recorded in two porcupines presenting severe injuries with clear signs of infection. These preliminary results may be a helpful tool in order to assess porcupine health status

    Hubble Tarantula Treasury Project: Unraveling Tarantula's Web. II. Optical and Near Infrared Star Formation History of the Starburst Cluster NGC 2070 in 30 Doradus

    We present a study of the recent star formation of 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the panchromatic imaging survey Hubble Tarantula Treasury Project (HTTP). In this paper we focus on the stars within 20 pc of the center of the massive ionizing cluster of 30 Doradus, NGC 2070. We recovered the star formation history by comparing deep optical and NIR color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) with state-of-the-art synthetic CMDs generated with the latest PARSEC models, which include all stellar phases from pre-main sequence to post- main sequence. For the first time in this region we are able to measure the star formation using intermediate and low mass stars simultaneously. Our results suggest that NGC2070 experienced a prolonged activity. In particular, we find that the star formation in the region: i) exceeded the average LMC rate ~ 20 Myr ago; ii) accelerated dramatically ~ 7 Myr ago; and iii) reached a peak value 1-3 Myr ago. We did not find significant deviations from a Kroupa initial mass function down to 0.5 Msun. The average internal reddening E(B-V) is found to be between 0.3 and 0.4 mag.Comment: Submitted to Ap

    Climate change effects on bread wheat phenology and grain quality: A case study in the north of Italy

    Increasing temperatures, heat waves, and reduction of annual precipitation are all the expressions of climate change (CC), strongly affecting bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain yield in Southern Europe. Being temperature the major driving force of plants' phenological development, these variations also have effects on wheat phenology, with possible consequences on grain quality, and gluten protein accumulation. Here, through a case study in the Bolognese Plain (North of Italy), we assessed the effects of CC in the area, the impacts on bread wheat phenological development, and the consequences on grain gluten quality. The increasing trend in mean annual air temperature in the area since 1952 was significant, with a breakpoint identified in 1989, rising from 12.7 to 14.1°C, accompanied by the signals of increasing aridity, i.e., increase in water table depth. Bread wheat phenological development was compared in two 15-year periods before and after the breakpoint, i.e., 1952-1966 (past period), and 2006-2020 (present period), the latest characterized by aridity and increased temperatures. A significant shortening of the chronological time necessary to reach the main phenological phases was observed for the present period compared to the past period, finally shortening the whole life cycle. This reduction, as well as the higher temperature regime, affected gluten accumulation during the grain-filling process, as emerged analyzing gluten composition in grain samples of the same variety harvested in the area both before and after the breakpoint in temperature. In particular, the proportion of gluten polymers (i.e., gliadins, high and low molecular weight glutenins, and their ratio) showed a strong and significant correlation with cumulative growing degree days (CGDDs) accumulated during the grain filling. Higher CGDD values during the period, typical of CC in Southern Europe, accounting for higher temperature and faster grain filling, correlated with gliadins, high molecular weight glutenins, and their proportion with low molecular weight glutenins. In summary, herein reported, data might contribute to assessing the effects of CC on wheat phenology and quality, representing a tool for both predictive purposes and decision supporting systems for farmers, as well as can guide future breeding choices for varietal innovation

    The Resolved Stellar Populations in NGC 1705

    We present HST photometry of the resolved stellar population in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1705. The galaxy has been observed with both WFPC2 and NICMOS, and successful images have been obtained in the F555W, F814W, F110W and F160W bands. The optical fields cover most of the galaxy, while the infrared field (NIC2) maps only its central regions. The optical photometry provides \~20000 objects down to m_F555W ~ 29 in the PC field of view and ~ 20000 in the three WFCs. In the infrared we have been able to resolve ~ 2400 stars down to m_{F110W}, m_{F160W} ~ 26. A subsample of 1834 stars have been unambiguously measured in all the four bands. The corresponding color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) confirm the existence of an age gradient, showing that NGC 1705 hosts both young (a few Myr old) and very old (up to 15 Gyr old) stars, with the former strongly concentrated toward the galactic center and the latter present everywhere, but much more easily visible in the external regions. The tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) is clearly visible both in the optical and in the infrared CMDs and allows us to derive the galaxy distance. Taking into account the uncertainties related to both the photometry and the TRGB magnitude -- distance relation, we find that the distance modulus of NGC 1705 is (m-M)_0=28.54 +- 0.26, corresponding to a distance D=5.1 +- 0.6 Mpc.Comment: aastex, 37 pages, 13 (reduced resolution) .ps figures.     Food-Specific IgG4 Antibody-Guided Exclusion Diet Improves Conditions of Patients with Chronic Pain

    Introduction Chronic pain is related to gastrointestinal (GI) functions because food components affect inflammation and pain through their action on the GI immune and/or neural system and because many analgesics interact with the gut to alter its structure and function. Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) are food-specific antibodies resulting from exposure of the gut immune system to nutrients. High IgG4 levels have been found to be associated with inflammation. Methods IgG4 were determined (both with the rapid test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, ELISA) in men and women outpatients with chronic pain. All subjects were asked to exclude for 4 weeks all foods to which they had high blood levels of IgG4 antibodies. Pain and quality of life questionnaires were administered before (visit 1) and after (visit 2) the personalized exclusion diet period. Visual analogue scale (VAS), Italian Pain Questionnaire (QUID) and Margolis (MA) questionnaires were administered to determine pain intensity, pain features and pain extent, while Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Profile of Mood States (POMS) were used to test the quality of life and mood state. The nutritional status was evaluated in all subjects. Subject groups were women of reproductive age (pre-MW), women in menopause for at least 1 year (MW) and men. Results Fifty-four subjects with chronic pain (n = 12 neuropathic, n = 14 diffuse pain, n = 11 headache, n = 17 low back pain) completed the two visits and the 1-month exclusion diet. At visit 1, 47 (87%) subjects showed medium/high levels of IgG4 to at least one food. The foods showing the highest IgG4 values were eggs, dairy products, cereals and dried fruit. At visit 2, IgG4 levels were decreased, increased or unchanged. In all groups, the 4-week exclusion diet resulted in a significant reduction in all pain measures and an improvement of quality of life parameters. In particular, at visit 2, the VAS score determined in the morning decreased by more than 50%. Conclusions A food elimination diet based on IgG4 antibody levels may be effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life in patients with chronic pain
