    Observations of the Non-Thermal X-ray Emission from the Galactic Supernova Remnant G347.3-0.5

    G347.3-0.5 (RX J1713.7-3946) is a member of the new class of shell-type Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) that feature non-thermal components to their X-ray emission. We have analyzed the X-ray spectrum of this SNR over a broad energy range (0.5 to 30 keV) using archived data from observations made with two satellites, the Roentgenstaellit (ROSAT) and the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA), along with data from our own observations made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Using a combination of the models EQUIL and SRCUT to fit thermal and non-thermal emission, respectively, from this SNR, we find evidence for a modest thermal component to G347.3-0.5's diffuse emission with a corresponding energy of kT = 1.4 keV. We also obtain an estimate of 70 TeV for the maximum energy of the cosmic-ray electrons that have been accelerated by this SNR.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in "Neutron Stars in Supernova Remnants" (ASP Conference Proceedings), eds P.     A knowledge-based system design/information tool

    The objective of this effort was to develop a Knowledge Capture System (KCS) for the Integrated Test Facility (ITF) at the Dryden Flight Research Facility (DFRF). The DFRF is a NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) facility. This system was used to capture the design and implementation information for NASA's high angle-of-attack research vehicle (HARV), a modified F/A-18A. In particular, the KCS was used to capture specific characteristics of the design of the HARV fly-by-wire (FBW) flight control system (FCS). The KCS utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge-based system (KBS) technology. The KCS enables the user to capture the following characteristics of automated systems: the system design; the hardware (H/W) design and implementation; the software (S/W) design and implementation; and the utilities (electrical and hydraulic) design and implementation. A generic version of the KCS was developed which can be used to capture the design information for any automated system. The deliverable items for this project consist of the prototype generic KCS and an application, which captures selected design characteristics of the HARV FCS

    Preliminary study of VTO thrust requirements for a V/STOL aircraft with lift plus lift/cruise propulsion

    A preliminary assessment was made of the VTO thrust requirements for a supersonic (Type B) aircraft with a Lift plus Lift/Cruise propulsion system. A baseline aircraft with a takeoff gross weight (TOGW) of 13 608 kg (30,000 lb) was assumed. Pitch, roll, and yaw control thrusts (i.e., the thrusts needed for aircraft attitude control in the flight hover mode) were estimated based on a specified set of maneuver acceleration requirements for V/STOL aircraft. Other effects (such as installation losses, suckdown, reingestion, etc.), which add to the thrust requirements for VTO were also estimated. For the baseline aircraft, the excess thrust required for attitude control of the aircraft during VTO and flight hover was estimated to range from 36.9 to 50.9 percent of the TOGW. It was concluded that the total thrust requirements for the aircraft/propulsion system are large and significant. In order to achieve the performance expected of this aircraft/propulsion system, reductions must be made in the excess thrust requirements

    Focussing on the Critical: Film Pedagogy in the Modern University

    This study is about the problems that arise for film education models once they are drawn back into the processes, systems and norms of higher education and asked to respond to issues around fairness, diversity and power. In our post-1992 UK university, the degree offering included a BA (Hons) Film. Founded by distinguished film scholars and supported by a thriving film and television industry, it operated successfully for many years, attracting large numbers of applicants and students moving successfully into the screen industries. Given its reputation and location graduates continued to be placed in the industry at good rates, and films produced won awards. This was often achieved by moving outside the parameters of acceptable higher education practices, making dubious claims about the industry relevance of organizational arrangements and requiring a disproportionate share of university resources. The admissions arrangements and curriculum design actively discouraged diversity, and the intensity of the programme, conducted without evidence of its efficacy, privileged students from wealthy backgrounds in a way that was not seen as problematic by the course team. This paper examines the reasons for this and how it reflects the perception by staff and students of the film industry. It discusses some of our interventions and flags up considerations for reconciling the culture of film with the conventions of higher education. Our experience is offered as typical rather than exceptional in incorporating this difficult and complex creative practice into a university setting

    Small-q electron-phonon scattering and linear dc resistivity in high-T_c oxides

    We examine the effect on the DC resistivity of small-q electron-phonon scattering, in a system with the electronic topology of the high-T_c oxides. Despite the fact that the scattering is dominantly forward, its contribution to the transport can be significant due to ``ondulations'' of the bands in the flat region and to the umpklapp process. When the extended van-Hove singularities are sufficiently close to EFE_F the acoustic branch of the phonons contribute significantly to the transport. In that case one can obtain linear TT dependent resistivity down to temperatures as low as 10 K, even if electrons are scattered also by optical phonons of about 500 K as reported by Raman measurements.Comment: LATEX file and 4 Postscript figure

    Saturation-Dependence of Dispersion in Porous Media

    In this study, we develop a saturation-dependent treatment of dispersion in porous media using concepts from critical path analysis, cluster statistics of percolation, and fractal scaling of percolation clusters. We calculate spatial solute distributions as a function of time and calculate arrival time distributions as a function of system size. Our previous results correctly predict the range of observed dispersivity values over ten orders of magnitude in experimental length scale, but that theory contains no explicit dependence on porosity or relative saturation. This omission complicates comparisons with experimental results for dispersion, which are often conducted at saturation less than 1. We now make specific comparisons of our predictions for the arrival time distribution with experiments on a single column over a range of saturations. This comparison suggests that the most important predictor of such distributions as a function of saturation is not the value of the saturation per se, but the applicability of either random or invasion percolation models, depending on experimental conditions

    Comparison of two parallel/series flow turbofan propulsion concepts for supersonic V/STOL

    The thrust, specific fuel consumption, and relative merits of the tandem fan and the dual reverse flow front fan propulsion systems for a supersonic V/STOL aircraft are discussed. Consideration is given to: fan pressure ratio, fan air burning, and variable core supercharging. The special propulsion system components required are described, namely: the deflecting front inlet/nozzle, the aft subsonic inlet, the reverse pitch fan, the variable core supercharger and the low pressure forward burner. The potential benefits for these unconventional systems are indicated
