    Testing Luminescence Dating Methods for Small Samples from Very Young Fluvial Deposits

    The impetus behind this study is to understand the sedimentological dynamics of very young fluvial systems in the Amazon River catchment and relate these to land use change and modern analogue studies of tidal rhythmites in the geologic record. Initial quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating feasibility studies have concentrated on spit and bar deposits in the Rio TapajĂłs. Many of these features have an appearance of freshly deposited pristine sand, and these observations and information from anecdotal evidence and LandSat imagery suggest an apparent decadal stability. The characteristics of OSL from small (~5 cm) sub-samples from ~65 cm by ~2 cm diameter vertical cores are quite remarkable. Signals from medium-sized aliquots (5 mm diameter) exhibit very high specific luminescence sensitivity, have excellent dose recovery and recycling, essentially independent of preheat, and show minimal heat transfer even at the highest preheats. These characteristics enable measurement of very small signals with reasonable precision and, using modified single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) approaches, equivalent doses as low as ~4 mGy can be obtained. Significant recuperation is observed for samples from two of the study sites and, in these instances, either the acceptance threshold was increased or growth curves were forced through the origin; recuperation is considered most likely to be a measurement artefact given the very small size of natural signals. Dose rates calculated from combined inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry/inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-MS/ICP-OES) and high-resolution gamma spectrometry range from ~0.3 to 0.5 mGya−1 , and OSL ages for features so far investigated range from 13 to 34 years to several 100 years. Sampled sands are rich in quartz and yields of 212–250 ”m or 250–310 ”m grains indicate high-resolution sampling at 1–2 cm intervals is possible. Despite the use of medium-sized aliquots to ensure the recovery of very dim natural OSL signals, these results demonstrate the potential of OSL for studying very young active fluvial processes in these settings

    Decoherence processes during active manipulation of excitonic qubits in semiconductor quantum dots

    Using photoluminescence spectroscopy, we have investigated the nature of Rabi oscillation damping during active manipulation of excitonic qubits in self-assembled quantum dots. Rabi oscillations were recorded by varying the pulse amplitude for fixed pulse durations between 4 ps and 10 ps. Up to 5 periods are visible, making it possible to quantify the excitation dependent damping. We find that this damping is more pronounced for shorter pulse widths and show that its origin is the non-resonant excitation of carriers in the wetting layer, most likely involving bound-to-continuum and continuum-to-bound transitions.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Non-functional immunoglobulin G transcripts in a case of hyper-immunoglobulin M syndrome similar to type 4

    86% of immunoglobulin G (IgG) heavy-chain gene transcripts were found to be non-functional in the peripheral blood B cells of a patient initially diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency, who later developed raised IgM, whereas no non-functionally rearranged transcripts were found in the cells of seven healthy control subjects. All the patient's IgM heavy-chain and Îș light-chain transcripts were functional, suggesting that either non-functional rearrangements were being selectively class-switched to IgG, or that receptor editing was rendering genes non-functional after class-switching. The functional Îł-chain sequences showed a normal rate of somatic hypermutation while non-functional sequences contained few somatic mutations, suggesting that most came from cells that had no functional gene and therefore were not receiving signals for hypermutation. However, apoptosis of peripheral blood lymphocytes was not impaired. No defects have been found in any of the genes currently known to be responsible for hyper-IgM syndrome but the phenotype fits best to type 4

    In-Place Recycling and Reclamation of Asphaltic Concrete Pavements in Kentucky

    Full-depth reclamation has been defined by the Asphalt Recycling and Reclaiming Association as a “rehabilitation technique in which the full thickness of the asphalt pavement and a predetermined portion of the underlying material (base, subbase, and/or subgrade) is uniformly pulverized, blended and compacted to provide an upgraded, homogeneous material resulting in a stabilized base course.” The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has utilized the full-depth reclamation (FDR) process as a method to address asphalt pavements exhibiting widespread base failures. The FDR process transforms the existing hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement and underlying granular materials into a stabilized base layer. The stabilized layer is then overlaid with a new HMA surface layer. However, the process of when and how to use the FDR process has not been well defined in Kentucky. The Cabinet commonly uses its Special Note for Cement Stabilized Roadbed as guidance for a stabilized subgrade and is dependent upon the road contractor for a suitable mixture design. The research reported herein presents suggested guidelines to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for the design and construction for FDR pavements. Special Notes for Full-Depth Reclamation of Hot Mix Asphalt pavements using cement and asphalt emulsions as stabilizers are presented for consideration. This report, along with the Special Notes, includes a process to identify potential projects for the FDR process, criteria for selecting the stabilizer best suited to the conditions, the optimum thickness of material to be recycled, and the amount of stabilizer to be added
