The Social Benefits of the Morning Meeting: Creating a Space for Social and Character Education in the Classroom
The intense focus of academics currently in practice in elementary schools limits the opportunities for developing social skills and abilities that are necessary 21st century skills. Through a specifically structured Morning Meeting a teacher can create a space in the classroom that encourages the growth of important social skills that will support the development needed in the future workplace. The purpose of this study is to gather information that explores the roll of social interaction activities such as a classroom morning meeting and its impact on social skills development. The literature reveals the following 21st century skills need to be taught to students to facilitate their success in the future: problem solving, critical thinking, empathy, collaboration, creativity and respect. The literature supports the idea that a form of community building meetings, hosted frequently in the classroom, help promote necessary learning and social skills, empowering students both in academic and social settings. This is a qualitative study using interview protocol. The participants included are currently employed as teachers in an elementary school and conducting morning meetings with their students. Hosting daily Morning Meetings in the classroom helps to build a safe and encouraging environment where community, trust, and respect flourish. Through this process, social and emotional intelligences develop and the students begin to practice and use 21st century skills in their academic work and social relationships. Student academic achievement is affected positively from the work accomplished in Morning Meeting and student behavior improves
Motivations for Advance Care and End-of-Life Planning Among LGB Older Adults
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) older adults are more likely than their heterosexual peers to experience health disparities, discrimination from healthcare providers based on sexual orientation, and rejection from their family of origin, all of which can complicate medical care and decision making, as well as end-of-life arrangements. Yet, relatively few studies of LGB seniors have looked at motivations for advance care and end-of-life planning, which are strategies that can help ensure that healthcare treatment and end-of-life wishes are enacted as desired. The present qualitative study investigated this topic with a purposive sample of nine LGB and same-gender-loving adults in a metropolitan region of the Southeastern United States. The study involved in-depth face-to-face interviews, followed by a brief pen-and-paper survey. Participants’ ages ranged from 65 to 77; the sample included five men and four women. Six individuals were white/Caucasian, while three were African American/Black. We identified three themes related to motivations for advance care and end-of-life planning: wanting a sense of agency, learning from others, and reducing conflict and confusion for loved ones. We discuss the importance of these findings for social work practice with LGB older adults and for social work education, as well as implications for future research
Coping strategies used by LGB older adults in facing and anticipating health challenges: A narrative analysis
Given that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) older adults face notable health disparities compared to their heterosexual counterparts, there is a need for understanding how LGB adults cope with health challenges in late life. The current study analyzes narratives from nine LGB adults age 65 and older living in an urban area in the Southeast U.S. Participants spoke of coping strategies related to health promotion behaviors, shifting perspectives of health and body, trusting in spirituality for comfort, and accepting the end of life. We discuss implications for social services professionals who work with older LGB adults and for future research
Ten Questions Concerning Well-Being in the Built Environment
Well-being in the built environment is a topic that features frequently in building standards and certification schemes, in scholarly articles and in the general press. However, despite this surge in attention, there are still many questions on how to effectively design, measure, and nurture well-being in the built environment. Bringing together experts from academia and the building industry, this paper aims to demonstrate that the promotion of well-being requires a departure from conventional agendas. The ten questions and answers have been arranged to offer a range of perspectives on the principles and strategies that can better sustain the consideration of well-being in the design and operation of the built environment. Placing a specific focus on some of the key physical factors (e.g., light, temperature, sound, and air quality) of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) that strongly influence occupant perception of built spaces, attention is also given to the value of multi-sensory variability, to how to monitor and communicate well-being outcomes in support of organizational and operational strategies, and to future research needs and their translation into building practice and standards. Seen as a whole, a new framework emerges, accentuating the integration of diverse new competencies required to support the design and operation of built environments that respond to the multifaceted physical, physiological, and psychological needs of their occupants

A rapid, non-invasive population assessment technique for marine burrowing macrofauna inhabiting soft sediments
Population assessment techniques for soft-sediment infauna (invertebrates within the substrate) requires excavation of specimens, damaging or killing the specimen and surrounding habitat, while being time-consuming and costly. Rapid population assessments of some marine burrowing decapods have been possible by counting burrow openings to estimate abundance, and while they may be used as indicator species, these decapods are not ubiquitous to environments requiring monitoring. Additionally, the presence of other burrowing macrofauna (invertebrates living in the sediment and retained on 1mm mesh such as clams or large worms) may reduce the efficacy of burrow openings in estimating macrofauna abundance. As such, we assessed mudflats along the north coast of British Columbia, Canada, during summer 2017 to determine if macrofauna abundances could be estimated from burrow openings on the sediment surface in regions of low (n = 1 species) and high (n = 8 species) biodiversity. Abundance could not be estimated at the low diversity sites where only one macrofaunal species created burrows. At the high diversity site, species-specific models estimating abundance from burrow openings could not be constructed; however, the total number of burrow openings observed was useful in estimating total infaunal community abundance. As such, burrow openings may not be an effective tool in assessing species-specific abundances, but may be appropriate to estimate overall community changes

The next generation of exoplanet-hunting spectrographs should deliver up to
an order of magnitude improvement in radial velocity precision over the
standard 1 m/s state of the art. This advance is critical for enabling the
detection of Earth-mass planets around Sun-like stars. New calibration
techniques such as laser frequency combs and stabilized etalons ensure that the
instrumental stability is well characterized. However, additional sources of
error include stellar noise, undetected short-period planets, and telluric
contamination. To understand and ultimately mitigate error sources, the
contributing terms in the error budget must be isolated to the greatest extent
possible. Here, we introduce a new high cadence radial velocity program, the
EXPRES 100 Earths program, which aims to identify rocky planets around bright,
nearby G and K dwarfs. We also present a benchmark case: the 62-d orbit of a
Saturn-mass planet orbiting the chromospherically quiet star, HD 3651. The
combination of high eccentricity (0.6) and a moderately long orbital period,
ensures significant dynamical clearing of any inner planets. Our Keplerian
model for this planetary orbit has a residual RMS of 58 cm/s over a
month time baseline. By eliminating significant contributors to the radial
velocity error budget, HD 3651 serves as a standard for evaluating the long

Fit for Life: Educating About a Healthy Lifestyle in Omaha Elementary Schools
Background: The prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing across the country. Health education at a young age is critical for children to establish healthy habits. The Fit for Life program is put together by Creighton medical students to inspire elementary students to lead a healthy lifestyle. The curriculum integrates physical exercise, real organ demonstrations, emotional wellness exercises, and nutritious meal building to model and encourage healthy habits.
Methods: Over four weeks, medical students taught the 4th and 5th graders of two Omaha schools over live video while they followed along with hands-on activities. Before and after the program, students’ height and weight were measured to calculate BMI, and the students completed pre- and post-program quizzes. Paired t-tests were performed to analyze differences in student BMIs and quiz scores. Pre-program quiz scores of students who completed two consecutive years were compared using paired t-tests.
Results: Student BMIs before and after the program showed no significant changes (p = 0.479, n = 45) however, quiz scores significantly improved after the program (p \u3c 0.001, n = 44). Self-reported survey responses after the program demonstrate increased motivation for a healthy lifestyle as well as improved understanding of the importance of sleep, exercise, reduced screen time, and healthy eating. Those who completed the program for two consecutive years had significantly higher pre-program quiz scores the second year (p \u3c 0.05, n = 18).
Conclusion: Our study found a significant increase in pre- and post-program assessment scores which suggest improvement in student perspective and knowledge of healthy habits. Similarly, students who completed the program for two consecutive years demonstrated an increase in pre-program quiz scores suggesting retention of health knowledge. While there was no significant difference in pre- and post-program BMIs, results may be limited by the duration of the study, given that changes in weight are often insubstantial in the short-term.https://digitalcommons.unmc.edu/chri_forum/1006/thumbnail.jp
Genome Sequence of the Model Mushroom Schizophyllum Commune
Much remains to be learned about the biology of mushroom-forming fungi, which are an important source of food, secondary metabolites and industrial enzymes. The wood-degrading fungus Schizophyllum commune is both a genetically tractable model for studying mushroom development and a likely source of enzymes capable of efficient degradation of lignocellulosic biomass. Comparative analyses of its 38.5-megabase genome, which encodes 13,210 predicted genes, reveal the species\u27s unique wood-degrading machinery. One-third of the 471 genes predicted to encode transcription factors are differentially expressed during sexual development of S. commune. Whereas inactivation of one of these, fst4, prevented mushroom formation, inactivation of another, fst3, resulted in more, albeit smaller, mushrooms than in the wild-type fungus. Antisense transcripts may also have a role in the formation of fruiting bodies. Better insight into the mechanisms underlying mushroom formation should affect commercial production of mushrooms and their industrial use for producing enzymes and pharmaceuticals

Sediment geochemistry influences infaunal invertebrate community composition and population abundances
Infaunal invertebrate communities are structured by various factors, including predation, resource availability, and environmental conditions. Given that these invertebrates live within sediment, it is not surprising that sediment properties play a critical role in many infaunal behaviours. When models explaining spatial and temporal variation in infaunal community composition are constructed using physical, biophysical, environmental, and sediment properties (salinity, detrital cover, elevation, particle size distribution, organic and water content, redox conditions, and penetrability), a considerable portion of the variation in the data is typically unaccounted for. This suggests that we do not fully understand all the variables that influence infaunal invertebrate communities. One suite of under-explored variables is the elemental composition/concentration of the sediments themselves. As such, we evaluated if sediment geochemistry improved model performance of the spatial variation in infaunal invertebrate communities on three intertidal mudflats in northern British Columbia, Canada. We observed that models including geochemistry data outperformed models that only included physical, biophysical, and environmental properties. Our results therefore suggest that some of the observed, and previously unaccounted for spatial variation in infaunal community composition may be a product of variation in sediment geochemistry. As such, sediment geochemistry should be accounted for when studying infaunal communities and assessing human impacts upon intertidal systems
