    Program Assessment the Easy Way: Using Embedded Indicators to Assess Program Outcomes

    The culminating design experience for civil engineering majors at the United States Military Academy (USMA) is CE492, Design of Structural Systems. CE492 serves as a “capstone” experience or one in which students are faced with a multi-disciplinary design project incorporating facets from all previous civil engineering courses. Previous capstone experiences have required students to design structures planned for construction or currently under construction at the Academy, thus providing an opportunity for site visitations and active participation with key players in the project development process. Since CE492 provides a multi-disciplinary experience, it also provides an ideal opportunity for the application of embedded assessment indicators. The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of an embedded assessment technique which has been used successfully for two semesters in CE450, Infrastructure Development and Construction Management, to assess accomplishment of the Academy’s Engineering and Technology Goal. By merging the student evaluation and assessment processes in CE492, instructor workload was reduced, student evaluation was tied more closely to the relevant academic program and the ASCE Body of Knowledge (BOK) outcomes, and a systematic method was created for identifying shortcomings and areas of excellence in the program

    Planning ahead in Missouri's dairy industry

    Text of caption on page 6 is cut off due to tight binding."Dairying originated as a way men could turn supplies of forage into profitable human food by applying their skill and labor to the management of herds of milking animals. This objective still applies-but how the means have changed! Methods of getting milk out of a cow, to and through the market, and into the kitchens of consumers have gone from hand style to "untouched by human hand" marvels of mechanization. Even the cow, the factory that does the conversion, has been modified into a manufacturing machine that grows more efficient and productive each year. Average production per cow has climbed from 4,218 to 8,513 pounds per year in the past 40 years. Missouri cows haven't produced as well, but have climbed from 3,300 to 7,400 pounds in the same period. That's one of the problems we need to correct in the next few years to stay in competition. Progress has been slow in increasing forage yields but that's coming in for attention now. This publication reviews where Missouri's dairy industry stands now, where we're headed if present trends continue., and what needs to be done to improve the position of dairying.     The c2d Spitzer Spectroscopic Survey Of Ices Around Low-Mass Young Stellar Objects. I. H2O And The 5-8 Mu M Bands

    To study the physical and chemical evolution of ices in solar-mass systems, a spectral survey is conducted of a sample of 41 low-luminosity YSOs (L similar to 0.1-10 L-circle dot) using 3-38 mu m Spitzer and ground-based spectra. The sample is complemented with previously published Spitzer spectra of background stars and with ISO spectra of well-studied massive YSOs (L similar to 10(5) L-circle dot). The long-known 6.0 and 6.85 mu m bands are detected toward all sources, with the Class 0-type YSOs showing the deepest bands ever observed. The 6.0 mu m band is often deeper than expected from the bending mode of pure solid H2O. The additional 5-7 mu m absorption consists of five independent components, which, by comparison to laboratory studies, must be from at least eight different carriers. Much of this absorption is due to simple species likely formed by grain surface chemistry, at abundances of 1%-30% for CH3OH, 3%-8% for NH3, 1%-5% for HCOOH, similar to 6% for H2CO, and similar to 0.3% for HCOO- relative to solid H2O. The 6.85 mu m band has one or two carriers, of which one may be less volatile than H2O. Its carrier(s) formed early in the molecular cloud evolution and do not survive in the diffuse ISM. If an NH4+- containing salt is the carrier, its abundance relative to solid H2O is similar to 7%, demonstrating the efficiency of low-temperature acid-base chemistry or cosmic-ray-induced reactions. Possible origins are discussed for enigmatic, very broad absorption between 5 and 8 mu m.
