    Silicon sheet with molecular beam epitaxy for high efficiency solar cells

    The capabilities of the new technique of Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) are applied to the growth of high efficiency silicon solar cells. Because MBE can provide well controlled doping profiles of any desired arbitrary design, including doping profiles of such complexity as built-in surface fields or tandem junction cells, it would appear to be the ideal method for development of high efficiency solar cells. It was proposed that UCLA grow and characterize silicon films and p-n junctions of MBE to determine whether the high crystal quality needed for solar cells could be achieved

    Zero-gravity growth of NaF-NaCl eutectics in the NASA Skylab program

    Continuous and discontinuous NaF fibers, embedded in a NaCl matrix, were produced in space and on earth. The production of continuous fibers in a eutectic mixture is attributed to the absence of convection current in the liquid during solidification in space. Image transmission and optical transmittance measurements of transverse sections of the space-grown and earth-grown ingots were made with a light microscope and a spectrometer. It is shown that better optical properties were obtained from samples grown in space. This was attributed to a better alignment of NaF fibers along the ingot axis. A new concept is advanced to explain the phenomenon of transmittance versus far infrared wavelength of the directionally solidified NaCl-NaF eutectic in terms of the two-dimensional Bragg Scattering and the polarization effect of Rayleigh scattering. This concept can be applied to other eutectic systems as long as the index of refraction of the matrix over a range of wavelengths is known.     We study the massless minimally coupled scalar field on a two--dimensional de Sitter space-time in the setting of axiomatic quantum field theory. We construct the invariant Wightman distribution obtained as the renormalized zero--mass limit of the massive one. Insisting on gauge invariance of the model we construct a vacuum state and a Hilbert space of physical states which are invariant under the action of the whole de Sitter group. We also present the integral expression of the conserved charge which generates the gauge invariance and propose a definition of dual field.Comment: 13 page

    Spectrally efficient transmit diversity scheme for differentially modulated multicarrier transmissions

    Cyclic delay diversity is a simple, yet effective, transmit diversity scheme for multicarrier based transmissions employing coherent digital linear modulation schemes. It is shown that, for satisfactory operation, the scheme requires additional channel estimation overhead compared to single antenna and traditional space–time coded transmissions owing to the inherent increase in frequency selective fading. The authors analyse the additional channel estimation overhead requirement for a Hiperlan #2 style system with two transmit antennas operating in a NLOS indoor environment. The analysis shows that an additional overhead of 500% is required for the candidate system compared to a single antenna system. It is also shown that by employing differential modulation the channel estimation overhead can be eliminated with significant performance improvement compared to a system employing a practical channel estimation scheme. This novel combination, termed ‘differentially modulated cyclic delay diversity, is shown to yield a highly spectral efficient, yet simple transmit diversity solution for multi-carrier transmissions

    Quantitative multielement analysis using high energy particle bombardment

    Charged particles ranging in energy from 0.8 to 4.0 MeV are used to induce resonant nuclear reactions, Coulomb excitation (gamma X-rays), and X-ray emission in both thick and thin targets. Quantitative analysis is possible for elements from Li to Pb in complex environmental samples, although the matrix can severely reduce the sensitivity. It is necessary to use a comparator technique for the gamma-rays, while for X-rays an internal standard can be used. A USGS standard rock is analyzed for a total of 28 elements. Water samples can be analyzed either by nebulizing the sample doped with Cs or Y onto a thin formvar film or by extracting the sample (with or without an internal standard) onto ion exchange resin which is pressed into a pellet

    Compressible flow across narrow passages: Comparison of theory and experiment for face seals

    Computer calculation for determining compressible flow across radial face seals were compared with measured results obtained in a seal simulator rig at pressure ratios to 0.9 (ambient pressure/sealed pressure). In general, the measured and calculated leakages across the seal dam agreed within 3 percent. The resultant loss coefficient, dependent upon the pressure ratio, ranged from 0.47 to 0.68. The calculated pressures were within 2.5 N/cu um of the measured values
