    Artikkelen er en fĂžrste akustisk undersĂžkelse av sprĂ„klyder i norsk og i noen grad engelsk produsert av norsksprĂ„klige i det Ăžvre Midtvesten. Vi beskriver arbeid vedrĂžrende noen akustiske forskjeller i obstruenter slik de uttales av nedarvingstalere (ññ¬Âheritage speakersññ¬Â). Deres L1 og L2, norsk og amerikansk-engelsk, er begge sprĂ„k som har aspirasjon, men sprĂ„kene skiller seg fonologisk pĂ„ andre mĂ„ter. Vi fokuserer spesielt pĂ„ laryngale trekk, det vil si hvordan distinksjonen mellom konsonanter som er stemt (ññ¬Åvoicedññ¬Â) og ustemt (ññ¬Åvoicelessññ¬Â), eller lenis og fortis, blir realisert, samt det nĂŠrt beslektede problemet med kontraster i konsonantlengde i norsk.     The data hungry home

    It's said that the pleasure is in the giving, not the receiving. This belief is validated by how humans interact with their family, friends and society as well as their gardens, homes, and pets. Yet for ubiquitous devices, this dynamic is reversed with devices as the donors and owners as the recipients. This paper explores an alternative paradigm where these devices are elevated, becoming members of Data Hungry Homes, allowing us to build relationships with them using the principles that we apply to family, pets or houseplants. These devices are developed to fit into a new concept of the home, can symbiotically interact with us and possess needs and traits that yield unexpected positive or negative outcomes from interacting with them. Such relationships could enrich our lives through our endeavours to “feed” our Data Hungry Homes, possibly leading us to explore new avenues and interactions outside and inside the home

    Menin as a hub controlling mixed lineage leukemia

    Mixed lineage leukemia (MLL) fusion protein (FP)‐induced acute leukemia is highly aggressive and often refractory to therapy. Recent progress in the field has unraveled novel mechanisms and targets to combat this disease. Menin, a nuclear protein, interacts with wild‐type (WT) MLL, MLL‐FPs, and other partners such as the chromatin‐associated protein LEDGF and the transcription factor C‐Myb to promote leukemogenesis. The newly solved co‐crystal structure illustrating the menin–MLL interaction, coupled with the role of menin in recruiting both WT MLL and MLL‐FPs to target genes, highlights menin as a scaffold protein and a central hub controlling this type of leukemia. The menin/WT MLL/MLL‐FP hub may also cooperate with several signaling pathways, including Wnt, GSK3, and bromodomain‐containing Brd4‐related pathways to sustain MLL‐FP‐induced leukemogenesis, revealing new therapeutic targets to improve the treatment of MLL‐FP leukemias. In MLL fusion protein‐induced leukemias, menin is a central hub due to its role in recruiting WT MLL and MLL‐FPs to target genes. Menin also links C‐Myb/LEDGF to the MLL N‐terminus, underscoring menin's central role.     Non-Standard Errors

    In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data-generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: Non-standard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for better reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer-review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants

    EXAFS Characterisation of Ge Nanocrystals in Silica

    The formation and structure of Ge nanocrystals produced in silica by ion-implantation and thermal annealing were studied with transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. We compare results derived from these complementary techniques, focusing on the use of EXAFS to study the short-range order about Ge atoms. Utilizing this synchrotron-radiation-based analytical method, we show the nanocrystal inter-atomic distance distribution deviates from that of bulk Ge, exhibiting enhanced structural disorder of both Gaussian and non-Gaussian forms in the first, second and third nearest-neighbour shells. The extent of disorder in the nanocrystalline sample is comparable to that of relaxed amorphous material
