Reduction of the QCD string to a time component vector potential
We demonstrate the equivalence of the relativistic flux tube model of mesons
to a simple potential model in the regime of large radial excitation. We make
no restriction on the quark masses; either quark may have a zero or finite
mass. Our primary result shows that for fixed angular momentum and large radial
excitation, the flux tube/QCD string meson with a short-range Coulomb
interaction is described by a spinless Salpeter equation with a time component
vector potential V(r) = ar - k/r.Comment: RevTeX4, 10 pages, 3 eps figure
piggyBac transformation of the New World screwworm, \u3ci\u3eCochliomyia hominivorax\u3c/i\u3e, produces multiple distinct mutant strains
Sterile insect technique (SIT) programs are designed to eradicate pest species by releasing mass-reared, sterile insects into an infested area. The first major implementation of SIT was the New World Screwworm Eradication Program, which successfully eliminated the New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), from the Continental US, Mexico and much of Central America. Ionizing radiation is currently used for sterilization, but transgenic insect techniques could replace this method, providing a safer, more cost-effective alternative. Genetic transformation methods have been demonstrated in NWS, and verified by Southern blot hybridization, PCR and sequencing of element insertion junctions. A lethal insertional mutation and enhancer detection-like phenotypic expression variations are presented and discussed. In addition to supporting the eradication efforts, transformation methods offer potential means to identify genes and examine gene function in NWS
Equivalent thermo-mechanical parameters for perfect crystals
Thermo-elastic behavior of perfect single crystal is considered. The crystal
is represented as a set of interacting particles (atoms). The approach for
determination of equivalent continuum values for the discrete system is
proposed. Averaging of equations of particles' motion and long wave
approximation are used in order to make link between the discrete system and
equivalent continuum. Basic balance equations for equivalent continuum are
derived from microscopic equations. Macroscopic values such as Piola and Cauchy
stress tensors and heat flux are represented via microscopic parameters.
Connection between the heat flux and temperature is discussed. Equation of
state in Mie-Gruneisen form connecting Cauchy stress tensor with deformation
gradient and thermal energy is obtained from microscopic considerations.Comment: To be published in proceedings of IUTAM Simposium on "Vibration

Universal light quark mass dependence and heavy-light meson spectroscopy
Clean predictions are presented for all the spin-averaged heavy-light meson
spectroscopies. A new symmetry is identified wherein the energy eigenstates
have a universal dependence on both the light and heavy quark masses. This
universality is used in an efficient analysis of these mesons within the QCD
string/flux tube picture. Unique predictions for all the D, D_s, B, and B_s
type mesons in terms of just four measured quantities.Comment: REVTeX4, 6 pages, 9 eps figure
Wigner function description of a qubit-oscillator system
We derive the Bloch-type equations of motion for the Wigner function of a qubit nonlinearly coupled to a linear
oscillator, and investigate their usefulness in the quantum-classical transition regime
Proximity effect in ultrathin Pb/Ag multilayers within the Cooper limit
We report on transport and tunneling measurements performed on ultra-thin
Pb/Ag (strong coupled superconductor/normal metal) multilayers evaporated by
quench condensation. The critical temperature and energy gap of the
heterostructures oscillate with addition of each layer, demonstrating the
validity of the Cooper limit model in the case of multilayers. We observe
excellent agreement with a simple theory for samples with layer thickness
larger than 30\AA . Samples with single layers thinner than 30\AA deviate from
the Cooper limit theory. We suggest that this is due to the "inverse proximity
effect" where the normal metal electrons improve screening in the
superconducting ultrathin layer and thus enhance the critical temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The psychological wellbeing outcomes of nonpharmacological interventions for older persons with insomnia symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Nonpharmacological treatment of insomnia in older persons has been associated with reduced insomnia symptoms and increased psychological wellbeing. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined whether nonpharmacological interventions can promote wellbeing indicators in older persons who experience insomnia symptoms and investigated the components of these interventions. Twenty studies met inclusion criteria. Psychological wellbeing outcomes included symptoms of depression, anxiety, mental health-related quality of life, and fatigue. Interventions significantly reduced depression and fatigue symptoms in most of the studies that included these outcomes. Findings of our qualitative analysis suggest that mindfulness-based interventions in particularcan potentially reduce depression symptoms in older persons with insomnia symptoms. Meta-analyses of studies that included psychological wellbeing outcomes showed small-medium weighted mean effects indicating reductions in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and fatigue. The results suggest that nonpharmacological interventions for older persons with insomnia symptoms can potentially reduce depression and fatigue symptoms and highlight interventions that may be particularly valuable for this purpose
Spontaneous emission of a quantum particle under strong Stark interaction with resonant vacuum field
It has been shown that strong Stark interaction of a quantum particle with a
vacuum electromagnetic field reduces the speed of the one-quantum spontaneous
radiation and leads to additional shift of frequency of radiation transition.Comment: 6 page
