Remote sounding through semi-transparent cirrus cloud
A large portion of the earth is covered by thin semi-transparent cirrus cloud. The cirrus results from the natural injection of moisture into the upper troposphere by deep convection (i.e., anvils) and from man-made moisture injected into the upper troposphere by jet aircraft. Although most cirrus clouds are semi-transparent to infrared wavelengths, their heights, thicknesses, and spectral absorption properties must be known in order to retrieve atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles from the data. An algorithm is developed for accounting for the radiative properties of semi-transparent cloud in the retrieval of vertical temperature and moisture profiles. The algorithm is to be applied to the NASA ER2 HIS data collected during the FIRE cirrus field program

Landau damping of Bogoliubov excitations in optical lattices at finite temperature
We study the damping of Bogoliubov excitations in an optical lattice at
finite temperatures. For simplicity, we consider a Bose-Hubbard tight-binding
model and limit our analysis to the lowest excitation band. We use the Popov
approximation to calculate the temperature dependence of the number of
condensate atoms in each lattice well. We calculate the Landau
damping of a Bogoliubov excitation in an optical lattice due to coupling to a
thermal cloud of excitations. While most of the paper concentrates on 1D
optical lattices, we also briefly present results for 2D and 3D lattices. For
energy conservation to be satisfied, we find that the excitations in the
collision process must exhibit anomalous dispersion ({\it i.e.} the excitation
energy must bend upward at low momentum), as also exhibited by phonons in
superfluid . This leads to the sudden disappearance of all damping
processes in -dimensional simple cubic optical lattice when , where is the on-site interaction, and is the hopping matrix
element. Beliaev damping in a 1D optical lattice is briefly discussed.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figure
Rainfall as a cause of mechanical damage to Pseudocyphellaria rufovirescens in a New Zealand temperate rainforest
Lichens, like all poikilohydric plants, have a metabolism that is dependent on external moistening from their environment. In the case of green algal lichens high humidities may be sufficient for positive net photosynthesis to occur (Lange et al. 1993a). For these plants water stress is usually taken to mean a lack of water (Kappen 1988; Rundel 1988) but it can also mean an excess of water that leads to depressed CO2 exchange because of increased diffusion resistances at high thallus water contents (Lange & Tenhunen 1981; Kershaw 1985). Rather than this being an unusual occurrence, Lange et al. (19936) found reduced CO2 exchange at thallus supra-saturation to be present over long periods in the temperate rainforest of north-eastern New Zealand
Comment on "Quantum Confinement and Optical Gaps in Si Nanocrystals"
We show that the method used by Ogut, Chelikowsky and Louie (Phys. Rev. Lett.
79, 1770 (1997)) to calculate the optical gap of Si nanocrystals omits an
electron-hole polarization energy. When this contribution is taken into
account, the corrected optical gap is in excellent agreement with
semi-empirical pseudopotential calculations.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figur

IVOA Recommendation: SAMP - Simple Application Messaging Protocol Version 1.3
SAMP is a messaging protocol that enables astronomy software tools to
interoperate and communicate.
IVOA members have recognised that building a monolithic tool that attempts to
fulfil all the requirements of all users is impractical, and it is a better use
of our limited resources to enable individual tools to work together better.
One element of this is defining common file formats for the exchange of data
between different applications. Another important component is a messaging
system that enables the applications to share data and take advantage of each
other's functionality. SAMP builds on the success of a prior messaging
protocol, PLASTIC, which has been in use since 2006 in over a dozen astronomy
applications and has proven popular with users and developers. It is also
intended to form a framework for more general messaging requirements
