Tuberculin screening of some selected Fulani lactating cows in north-central Nigeria
The prevalence of mycobacterial infection among lactating Fulani cows was investigated in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Kaduna State of Nigeria. Tuberculin testing using single comparative intradermal tuberculin test showed a 14.6 % positive, 4 % doubtful, and 81.4 % negative reactors. Mycobacterial infection was found to be present in the nomadic (constantly moving) and seminomadic (limited movement) management systems studied but management showed no significant effect on the prevalence of the disease. However, the prevalence was significantly higher in older age groups than the younger ones (P < 0.05).Peer reviewedSubmitted Versio
Dark current mechanisms in bulk GaInNAs photodiodes
We have grown a series of bulk GaInNAs p-i-n diodes and identified some of the dark current mechanisms present in our devices. With a nitrogen composition of ~4 %, the band gap can be reduced to 0.94 eV. We also demonstrate that low dark current density is achievable without compromising the absorption and hence quantum efficiency up to 1.4 mum
Testing the isotropy of the Dark Energy Survey's extreme trans-Neptunian objects
We test whether the population of "extreme" trans-Neptunian objects (eTNOs)
detected in the Y4 Dark Energy Survey (DES) data exhibit azimuthal asymmetries
which might be evidence of gravitational perturbations from an unseen
super-Earth in a distant orbit. By rotating the orbits of the detected eTNOs,
we construct a synthetic population which, when subject to the DES selection
function, reproduces the detected distribution of eTNOs in the orbital elements
and as well as absolute magnitude , but has uniform distributions
in mean anomaly , longitude of ascending node and argument of
perihelion We then compare the detected distributions in each of
and to those expected from the
isotropic population, using Kuiper's variant of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.
The three angles are tested for each of 4 definitions of the eTNO population,
choosing among AU and perihelion AU. These choices
yield 3--7 eTNOs in the DES Y4 sample. Among the twelve total tests, two have
the likelihood of drawing the observed angles from the isotropic population at
AU, and the 4 detections at AU, have distribution with of coming from the isotropic
construction, but this is not strong evidence of anisotropy given the 12
different tests. The DES data taken on their own are thus consistent with
azimuthal isotropy and do not require a "Planet 9" hypothesis. The limited sky
coverage and object count mean, however, that the DES data by no means falsify
this hypothesis.Comment: Accepted on PS
Testing the isotropy of the dark energy Survey's extreme trans-neptunian objects
We test whether the population of "extreme"trans-Neptunian objects (eTNOs) detected in the first four years of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y4) data exhibit azimuthal asymmetries that might be evidence of gravitational perturbations from an unseen super-Earth in a distant orbit. By rotating the orbits of the detected eTNOs, we construct a synthetic population that, when subject to the DES selection function, reproduces the detected distribution of eTNOs in the orbital elements a, e, and i as well as absolute magnitude H, but has uniform distributions in mean anomaly M, longitude of ascending node Ω, and argument of perihelion ω. We then compare the detected distributions in each of Ω, ω, and the longitude of perihelion {equation presented} to those expected from the isotropic population, using Kuiper's variant of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The three angles are tested for each of four definitions of the eTNO population, choosing among a > (150, 250) au and perihelion q > (30, 37) au. These choices yield 3-7 eTNOs in the DES Y4 sample. Among the 12 total tests, two have the likelihood of drawing the observed angles from the isotropic population at p 250 and q > 37 au and the four detections at a > 250 and q > 30 au have a Ω distribution with p ≈ 0.03 coming from the isotropic construction, but this is not strong evidence of anisotropy given the 12 different tests. The DES data taken on their own are thus consistent with azimuthal isotropy and do not require a "Planet 9"hypothesis. The limited sky coverage and object count mean, however, that the DES data by no means falsify this hypothesis
SerpinB2 regulates stromal remodelling and local invasion in pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer has a devastating prognosis, with an overall 5-year survival rate of ~8%, restricted treatment options and characteristic molecular heterogeneity. SerpinB2 expression, particularly in the stromal compartment, is associated with reduced metastasis and prolonged survival in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and our genomic analysis revealed that SERPINB2 is frequently deleted in PDAC. We show that SerpinB2 is required by stromal cells for normal collagen remodelling in vitro, regulating fibroblast interaction and engagement with collagen in the contracting matrix. In a pancreatic cancer allograft model, co-injection of PDAC cancer cells and SerpinB2(-/-) mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) resulted in increased tumour growth, aberrant remodelling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and increased local invasion from the primary tumour. These tumours also displayed elevated proteolytic activity of the primary biochemical target of SerpinB2-urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA). In a large cohort of patients with resected PDAC, we show that increasing uPA mRNA expression was significantly associated with poorer survival following pancreatectomy. This study establishes a novel role for SerpinB2 in the stromal compartment in PDAC invasion through regulation of stromal remodelling and highlights the SerpinB2/uPA axis for further investigation as a potential therapeutic target in pancreatic cancer
Stress corrosion cracking: Characteristics, Mechanisms and Experimental study
Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a phenomenon in which the cracking of a metal alloy usually results from the combined action of a corrodent and tensile stress. Stresses that cause cracking can be residual or may be applied during service. A degree of mechanistic understanding of SCC will enable most metallic engineering materials to operate safely though stress corrosion cracking failures still continue to occur unexpectedly in industry. In this paper, the characteristics, mechanisms and methods of SCC prevention are reviewed. The results of experimental studies on alpha brass are also reported of which the failure mode conformed with the film-rupture and anodic dissolution mechanism
The additional value of TGFβ1 and IL-7 to predict the course of prostate cancer progression
Background: Given the fact that prostate cancer incidence will increase in the coming years, new prognostic biomarkers are needed with regard to the biological aggressiveness of the prostate cancer diagnosed. Since cytokines have been associated with the biology of cancer and its prognosis, we determined whether transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1), interleukin-7 (IL-7) receptor and IL-7 levels add additional prognostic information with regard to prostate cancer
Core or Cusps: The Central Dark Matter Profile of a Strong Lensing Cluster with a Bright Central Image at Redshift 1
We report on SPT-CLJ2011-5228, a giant system of arcs created by a cluster at z = 1.06. The arc system is notable for the presence of a bright central image. The source is a Lyman break galaxy at z s = 2.39 and the mass enclosed within the Einstein ring of radius 14 arcsec is . We perform a full reconstruction of the light profile of the lensed images to precisely infer the parameters of the mass distribution. The brightness of the central image demands that the central total density profile of the lens be shallow. By fitting the dark matter as a generalized Navarro–Frenk–White profile—with a free parameter for the inner density slope—we find that the break radius is kpc, and that the inner density falls with radius to the power −0.38 ± 0.04 at 68% confidence. Such a shallow profile is in strong tension with our understanding of relaxed cold dark matter halos; dark matter-only simulations predict that the inner density should fall as . The tension can be alleviated if this cluster is in fact a merger; a two-halo model can also reconstruct the data, with both clumps (density varying as and ) much more consistent with predictions from dark matter-only simulations. At the resolution of our Dark Energy Survey imaging, we are unable to choose between these two models, but we make predictions for forthcoming Hubble Space Telescope imaging that will decisively distinguish between them
VDES J2325-5229 a z=2.7 gravitationally lensed quasar discovered using morphology independent supervised machine learning
We present the discovery and preliminary characterization of a gravitationally lensed quasar with a source redshift = 2.74 and image separation of 2.9 arcsec lensed by a foreground = 0.40 elliptical galaxy. Since optical observations of gravitationally lensed quasars show the lens system as a superposition of multiple point sources and a foreground lensing galaxy, we have developed a morphology-independent multi-wavelength approach to the photometric selection of lensed quasar candidates based on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) supervised machine learning. Using this technique and multicolour photometric observations from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), near-IR photometry from the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and WISE mid-IR photometry, we have identified a candidate system with two catalogue components with = 18.61 and = 20.44 comprising an elliptical galaxy and two blue point sources. Spectroscopic follow-up with NTT and the use of an archival AAT spectrum show that the point sources can be identified as a lensed quasar with an emission line redshift of = 2.739 ± 0.003 and a foreground early-type galaxy with = 0.400 ± 0.002. We model the system as a single isothermal ellipsoid and find the Einstein radius θE ∼ 1.47 arcsec, enclosed mass enc ∼ 4 × 10⊙ and a time delay of ∼52 d. The relatively wide separation, month scale time delay duration and high redshift make this an ideal system for constraining the expansion rate beyond a redshift of 1.FO is supported jointly by CAPES (the Science without Borders programme) and the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust.
