    Resource management in IP-based radio access networks

    IP is being considered to be used in the Radio Access Network (RAN) of UMTS. It is of paramount importance to be able to provide good QoS guarantees to real time services in such an IP-based RAN. QoS in IP networks is most efficiently provided with Differentiated services (Diffserv). However, currently Diffserv mainly specifies Per Hop Behaviors (PHB). Proper mechanisms for admission control and resource reservation have not yet been defined. A new resource management concept in the IP-based RAN is needed to offer QoS guarantees to real time services. We investigate the current Diffserv mechanisms and contribute to development of a new resource management protocol. We focus on the load control algorithm [9], which is an attempt to solve the problem of admission control and resource reservation in IP-based networks. In this document we present some load control issues and propose to enhance the load control protocol with the Measurement Based Admission Control (MBAC) concept. With this enhancement the traffic load in the IP-based RAN can be estimated, since the ingress router in the network path can be notified by marking packets with the resource state information. With this knowledge, the ingress router can perform admission control to keep the IP-based RAN stable with a high utilization even in overload situations

    Modèle de contrôle optimal de l'utilisation des eaux conventionnelles et non conventionnelles en agriculture

    International audienceNous avons recherché les conditions optimales d'emploi des eaux conventionnelles (ressources naturelles) et non conventionnelles (eau usée traitée) en agriculture. Le modèle utilisé est fondé sur la technique du « contrôle optimal « et s'applique à une zone d'activité agricole utilisant trois sources d'eau (nappe, barrage, eaux usées traitées). La fonction objectif prend en compte les eaux provenant d'un barrage et représente le cas de plusieurs périmètres irrigués marocains (Sous-Massa, Ouarzazate, Doukkala, Tensift). L'objectif économique est assujetti à plusieurs contraintes, telles que la quantité limitée des ressources en eau conventionnelles et la dynamique des ressources en eau souterraine. Le développement de l'irrigation agricole est parfois menacé par la surexploitation de la nappe, comme dans la plaine de Sous-Massa. En raison des déficits en eau d'irrigation chroniques et de la surexploitation de la nappe souterraine, un projet de traitement des eaux usées à des fins agricoles a été mis en oeuvre dans la région d'Agadir. L'eau d'irrigation provient de la nappe souterraine et des eaux usées traitées. L'objectif de notre travail a été de valider le modèle dans cette situation et de déterminer les conditions d'arbitrage entre les deux sources d'eau en fonction des avantages économique et environnemental. Une base de données comprenant les quantités extraites, les coûts de pompage, le coût moyen de traitement des eaux usées a été constituée. La dynamique de la nappe avec ses diverses composantes est en cours de modélisation. Dans la situation étudiée, le modèle a permis de mieux formuler le problème de l'utilisation combinée des ressources et d'analyser les interférences de gestion. A l'aide de la technique du contrôle optimal, il est possible de définir des règles de gestion simples pour allouer de façon efficiente les ressources en eau et d'éviter ainsi la surexploitation de la nappe

    A simple maximum power point tracking based control strategy applied to a variable speed squirrel cage induction generator

    This paper presents a comprehensive modelling and control study of a variable speed wind energy conversion system based on a squirrel-cage induction generator (SCIG). The mathematical model of the SCIG is derived in Park frame along with the indirect field oriented control (IFOC) scheme based on a proportional and integral speed controller. A simple maximum power point tracking strategy is used to determine the optimal speed under variable wind speed conditions which is then used as the reference in the IFOC scheme. Power flow between the supply and the inverter is regulated via simultaneous control of the active and reactive currents of the grid and the DC link voltage. The simulation results show that the proposed control technique is able to maximise the energy extracted from the wind during the simulation scenarios considered. The results also demonstrate good transient response characteristics in the decoupled real and reactive powers.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Semantic A-translation and Super-consistency entail Classical Cut Elimination

    We show that if a theory R defined by a rewrite system is super-consistent, the classical sequent calculus modulo R enjoys the cut elimination property, which was an open question. For such theories it was already known that proofs strongly normalize in natural deduction modulo R, and that cut elimination holds in the intuitionistic sequent calculus modulo R. We first define a syntactic and a semantic version of Friedman's A-translation, showing that it preserves the structure of pseudo-Heyting algebra, our semantic framework. Then we relate the interpretation of a theory in the A-translated algebra and its A-translation in the original algebra. This allows to show the stability of the super-consistency criterion and the cut elimination theorem

    Power Quality Enhancement in Electricity Grids with Wind Energy Using Multicell Converters and Energy Storage

    In recent years, the wind power industry is experiencing a rapid growth and more wind farms with larger size wind turbines are being connected to the power system. While this contributes to the overall security of electricity supply, large-scale deployment of wind energy into the grid also presents many technical challenges. Most of these challenges are one way or another, related to the variability and intermittent nature of wind and affect the power quality of the distribution grid. Power quality relates to factors that cause variations in the voltage level and frequency as well as distortion in the voltage and current waveforms due to wind variability which produces both harmonics and inter-harmonics. The main motivation behind work is to propose a new topology of the static AC/DC/AC multicell converter to improve the power quality in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems. Serial switching cells have the ability to achieve a high power with lower-size components and improve the voltage waveforms at the input and output of the converter by increasing the number of cells. Furthermore, a battery energy storage system is included and a power management strategy is designed to ensure the continuity of power supply and consequently the autonomy of the proposed system. The simulation results are presented for a 149.2 kW wind turbine induction generator system and the results obtained demonstrate the reduced harmonics, improved transient response, and reference tracking of the voltage output of the wind energy conversion system.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Internal links and pairs as a new tool for the analysis of bipartite complex networks

    Many real-world complex networks are best modeled as bipartite (or 2-mode) graphs, where nodes are divided into two sets with links connecting one side to the other. However, there is currently a lack of methods to analyze properly such graphs as most existing measures and methods are suited to classical graphs. A usual but limited approach consists in deriving 1-mode graphs (called projections) from the underlying bipartite structure, though it causes important loss of information and data storage issues. We introduce here internal links and pairs as a new notion useful for such analysis: it gives insights on the information lost by projecting the bipartite graph. We illustrate the relevance of theses concepts on several real-world instances illustrating how it enables to discriminate behaviors among various cases when we compare them to a benchmark of random networks. Then, we show that we can draw benefit from this concept for both modeling complex networks and storing them in a compact format

    Conjugate Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccines for sickle cell disease.

    BACKGROUND: People affected with sickle cell disease are at high risk of infection from Haemophilus influenzae type b. Before the implementation of Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccination in high-income countries, this was responsible for a high mortality rate in children under five years of age. In African countries, where coverage of this vaccination is still extremely low, Haemophilus influenzae type b remains one of the most common cause of bacteraemias in children with sickle cell disease. The increased uptake of this conjugate vaccination may substantially improve the survival of children with sickle cell disease. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to determine whether Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccines reduce mortality and morbidity in children and adults with sickle cell disease.The secondary objectives were to assess the following in children and adults with sickle cell disease: the immunogenicity of Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccines; the safety of these vaccines; and any variation in effect according to type of vaccine, mode of administration (separately or in combination with other vaccines), number of doses, and age at first dose. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Cystic Fibrosis and Genetic Disorders Group\u27s Haemoglobinopathies Trials Register, compiled from electronic database searches and handsearching of journals and conference abstract books. We also contacted relevant pharmaceutical companies to identify unpublished trials.Date of last search: 23 November 2015. SELECTION CRITERIA: All randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials comparing Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccines with placebo or no treatment, or comparing different types of Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccines in people with sickle cell disease. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: No trials of Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccines in people with sickle cell disease were found. MAIN RESULTS: There is an absence of evidence from randomised controlled trials relating to the subject of this review. AUTHORS\u27 CONCLUSIONS: There has been a dramatic decrease in the incidence of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b infections observed in the post-vaccination era in people with sickle cell disease living in high-income countries. Therefore, despite the absence of evidence from randomised controlled trials, it is expected that Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccines may be useful in children affected with sickle cell disease, especially in African countries where there is a high prevalence of the disease. The implementation of childhood immunisation schedules, including universal Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccination, may substantially improve the survival of children with sickle cell disease living in low-income countries. We currently lack data to evaluate the potential effect of Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccination among unvaccinated adults with sickle cell disease. Further research should assess the optimal Hib immunisation schedule in children and adults with sickle cell disease
